The avoidance of a transfer tribunal in the Andy Williams transfer could prove to be a very wise move, if today's news is anything to go by.
Cambridge United chairman Lee Power is furious after they were told they would receive just £40,000 up front for striker Robbie Simpson from Coventry City. The youngster was only at Cambridge for 12 months, but bagged 17 goals in 32 appearances following his summer move from Cambridge City.
The tribunal ruled that the package, totalling £130,000 if all clauses were triggered, would include a sell-on clause of just 5%. Power was furious:
"The up front payment and the 5% sell-on is nothing short of disgraceful. I've never heard of such a low figure and we're just flabbergasted. Stunned. You see players moving in the Premiership for millions and still getting a 15-20% sell-on. This is a shambles and if this is the way forward in football then football at lower levels is doomed."
