Cambridges In Merger Talks

Cambridge United have announced on their official site that they are in "wide-ranging talks" with neighbours Cambridge City.

The talks centred around ground sharing and the merging of their Youth systems, but also encompassed the possibility of merging the two sides completely.

Bulls fans who made the trip earlier in the season will have seen the cramped City ground was in need of investment but City, who instigated the talks, may be looking to cash in on their major asset and move to United's Abbey Stadium. United recently scrapped their Youth side just weeks after announcing the closure of their Academy and remain deep in debt. The sale of City's ground could finance the repurchase of the Abbey Stadium after it was sold for £1.9million twelve months ago.

United Finance Director Nick Pomery expected more talks to happen quickly, but was quick to assure fans that any merger would be ratified by them first: "It's important for people to realise that no decisions have been made at the moment. We also need to make it absolutely clear that, in our view, fans are the backbone of any club, and whatever proposal we may put forward as directors - groundshare, mutual cooperation on youth, or whatever - will not happen if the supporters of both clubs cannot clearly see that it brings benefits that far outweigh any concerns.
"We want to do the right thing for football in Cambridge and for the supporters and sponsors of both clubs, and we clearly need to be sensitive to the proud histories of both clubs and their supporters."

Super Bulls cruise past Scunny

A brilliant first half performance was the base for Hereford United's latest league scalp in the LDV Vans Trophy. Scunthorpe United were the visitors to Edgar Street this evening and were the third league team that the Bulls have knocked out of the cup. It was the second time in as many seasons that The Iron have been defeated in this competition by The Bulls.

Craig Stanley and Dean Beckwith were the only two changes to the starting line-up while there was no place for Danny Carey-Bertram on the bench. Tony James was handed his place back in defence and Jamie Pitman lined up alongside Andy Ferrell in the midfield. The hosts made their intentions clear from the off, as they came straight at their League One opponents and had won a corner within a minute.

It was from a Scunny corner though, that Hereford's first real chance came from. A dangerous ball was delivered into the Bulls' box but, after a scramble, they countered through Simon Travis and his cross was inches away from the threatening foot of Adam Stansfield. Cleveland Taylor worked a good opening with some neat skill past James but his shot was well saved by Craig Mawson before rebounding out for a corner off Pitman.

Hereford continued to attack and took the lead with just seventeen minutes gone. Ferrell crossed in from the right and it was Rob Purdie who beat the offside trap to take the ball down, seemingly with his arm, but his low effort was pushed away by the 'keeper, but Stansfield was on hand to turn the loose ball into the open net. Guy Ipoua almost added to the lead moments after, when Pitman centred the ball and the Cameroonian hit the foot of the post from the edge of the box.

Purdie forced another save out of Tom Evans, this time from thirty yards out and once again the ball was played into the path of Stansfield but Evans was able to recover and force a corner this time. Alex Jeannin managed to hit the post from the resulting corner and then, in almost comical fashion, Evans was almost beaten by one of his own defenders who nearly lobbed him from twenty five yards out.

Stansfield, who has now scored three goals in as many games, was again at the heart of yet another Hereford attack, as he broke away down the right and delivered a perfect cross to the far post. Purdie, having made a decent connection with it, managed to hit the cross bar with his volley from little more than two yards with five minutes of the half remaining. Before the break there was time for the infamous referee Andy Woolmer to make yet another poor decision, in what was another poor performance from him. Stansfield was clearly tripped in the penatly area but Woolmer waved claims away.

However, Hereford did manage to net a second before the break as Tamika Mkandawire rose to direct an unstoppable header into the back of the net from Purdie's corner. In injury time, Ipoua slid a well timed through ball into Stansfield, but he managed to slice his effort wide while one on one with Evans. James had pulled up with an injury by now, and was duly replaced by Dean Beckwith at the half time break.

The second period was a lot less eventfull than the first, but it was enevitable that either side would not be able to keep up the pace that had been set. It was the home side who continued to look the most threatening though as the game became scrappy. Ferrell had found Andy Williams with a brilliant cross-field pass and Williams cut inside before shooting inches wide of the far post, where Stansfield almost turned the ball over the line.

The Iron responded by introducing their first choice strike force with Steve Torpey and top scorer Billy Sharp replacing Tommy Johnson and Wayne Cordon but man of the match Mkandawire, who was a rock in the brilliant Hereford defence throughout, and Beckwith kept the two very quiet indeed. Another Hereford counter attack almost resulted in another goal, but, following good play between Williams, Ipoua and Purdie, Stansfield sliced wide when in on goal, again!

Scunny did have a little spell towards the end of the game where they forced Mawson into some work, firstly when Andy Keogh shot from twenty five yards and Mawson pushed the ball over the bar. Soon after Keogh played Sharp in on goal, but Mawson was quickly out at Keogh's feet to block with his legs. The ball fell to Keogh, whose shot was blocked by the head of Pitman and then it was Torpey to have a go, but his header was brilliantly turned behind by Mawson.

United managed to play out the remaining five or so minutes with little trouble and Graham Evans was introduced late on in place of Adam Stansfield. His strike partner Ipoua had earlier been replaced by Jon Brady as a precaution, as it seemed he was risking a second yellow card from Woolmer.

It was a thoroughly entertaining encounter in which Hereford, for the most part, were the better side. Their first half display was about the best forty five minutes of football played by The Bulls this season and was clearly enjoyed by the majority of the crowd of 1,452, which included 57 away fans. The result follows up nicely from the cup success at Bognor Regis and sets Hereford up nicely for the Christmas Period. There is also a possibility that they could have a tasty Northern Section Semi-Final tie against local rivals Kidderminster Harriers.

HUFC: Mawson, Travis, Mkandawire, James, Jeannin, Purdie, Pitman, Ferrell, Williams, Ipoua, Stansfield. Subs: Beckwith, Lewis, Stanley, Evans, Brady.

SUFC: Evans, Goodwin, Byrne, Crosby, Ridley, Taylor, Baraclough, MacKenzie, Corden, Keogh, Johnson.Subs: Musselwhite,Torpey, Till, Ryan, Sharp.

Another Scalp for the Bulls

Hereford United deservedly moved on to the Semi-final Northern Section of the LDV Vans Trophy with a 2-0 win over Scunthorpe United this evening.

The Bulls took the lead through Adam Stansfield early in the game and Tamika Mkandawire doubled the advantage just on half-time.

Referee Andy Woolmer didn't do his reputation too many favours when he failed to give a penalty when Stansfield was brought down in the box.

Full report shortly.

In the other games in the Northern Section, Kidderminster defeated Bradford. Macclesfield went through last week and the Tranmere/Carlisle game went to penalties with Carlisle eventually going through.

The Draw for the Semi-finals is expected to take place on Saturday. (We will confirm this). There is the prospect of a local derby between Hereford And Kidderminster.
The ties will take place in the week commencing Jan 23rd.

The Conference game between Hereford United and Cambridge United scheduled for January 24th will be moved.

Finally Halifax beat Southport 1-0 in a Trophy replay this evening which means that Hereford United will travel to the Shay for the second round tie on January 14th.

Trewick hopes for another scalp this evening

John Trewick, the Hereford United coach, has told the Worcester News that the Bulls have taken some good scalps in recent years.

"This year and last year, we've taken some good scalps. We've shown on many occasions that we can match sides from League One and Two. We are capable of playing to their level," said Trewick.

"It is not as if we are catching these sides on bad days. We have beaten several teams playing good football.

"Sometimes, I think teams from the Football League don't play their absolute strongest side, but they are still strong.

"Scunthorpe had just got promoted last year and did not bring their full complement. We got through then and we are looking positively for a win again.

"I expect they will play a very strong side, similar to that which beat Halifax. They know they are only three matches away from a final at Cardiff.

"That's a long way off for us at the moment. Like anybody else, we would like to get to a final, but it's too early to talk about it."

Trewick commented about the seven goal spree last Saturday.

"Whenever you play well and score goals, it does lift confidence and morale. The secret is to keep building on it and we must try and continue that form against Scunthorpe tonight."

More on Conference TV

As reported earlier Conference TV swiches to a subscription only service from today.

Charges are £4.99 per calender month or £14.99 for the remainder of the season.

Confguide is reporting that subscribers will have access to the following services:

Exclusive match highlights from the 2005/6 Nationwide Conference season.
Well over 30 minutes of footage per week.
One "Game of the week" shown in full (90 minutes)
Access to 10 LIVE webcasts, streamed directly to your computer (Subject to agreement by The Football Conference).
Interviews and special features.
Previous season's Archive.

There is a free 1 minute promo currently on the conferencefootballTV site. The quality of the footage is vastly superior to that normally available.

Confguide also reports:

Although there was some support for the "Keep Conference TV a free service" campaign (the affiliate programme in conjunction with totalbet.com) the interest generated was not sufficient to keep the service free.

The Conference season lasts from August to April, a period of 9 months. At a rate of £4.99 per month that equates to £44.91 per season. There is expected to be a discount for a "season ticket" which should bring the cost down to about £35.

It has not yet been disclosed whether clubs will receive anything from Conference TV for showing the matches. Nor have any figures been released showing whether Conference TV has had any effect on attendances.

Neither has there been any news of what will happen to those fans who supported the Conference TV affiliate programme the first of these being with totalbet.com.

Not long ago the Conference TV website reported the following:

Each time a Conference fan signs up to one of these services, money goes to support both ConferenceFootball.tv as a free service and the respective club. We can track where each registration has come from to ensure correct distribution of funds.
To make this work only 10,000 fans need to participate in the affiliate programme each month.

We will keep you regularly updated on progress made and hope to make an announcement at Christmas regarding the success of the affiliate programme.

One suggestion gathering support is that Conference TV would be more attractive to supporters if only games featuring their club, ie Hereford United, were available.

A poll asking readers about whether they would subcribe to Conference TV has been set up on the Hereford United independent forum.

Team News: Bulls vs Scunthorpe

Bulls boss Graham Turner faces a nice selection headache for the LDV match. Jon Brady returns from suspension and Ryan Green is training again after a virus forced him out of Saturday's match. Whether Turner chooses to make changes after scoring seven at the weekend remains to be seen.

Scunthorpe will again be without Andy Butler and Matt Sparrow through injury. They are joined on the sidelines by the suspended Richard Hinds. The League One side netted their first win in six games on Saturday and are likely to remain unchanged with the exception of Hinds.

Match odds (bet365): Bulls 6/4, Draw 12/5, Scunthorpe 7/5.

Pay Per View Websites Creep Into The Conference

Hot on the heels of conferencefootball.tv becoming a pay per view operation, Woking have announced plans to make parts of their official site subscription only.

With annual prices between £39.99 and £99.99, "The Cards Online" will offer audio and video interviews, SMS text alerts, and a members-only forum. The service is provided by Spider Networks who already have similar services with several Scottish sides and Conference club Aldershot.

Macclesfield Face Insolvency After FA Impose Fines

League Two side Macclesfield face a miserable Christmas after the FA issued fines and compensation against them for a total of £257,000.

The club were investigated over grants from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund (FSIF) for the building of a new stand in 2000/1. The FA found that the club had breached rules by claiming grants before the work had been paid for, and that a sponsorship amount from the building contractors was actually a discount on the work - enabling the club to claim more by inflating the cost of the work.

Fines totalled £62,000, and the club were ordered to pay back £195,000 to the FSIF by 31st January. Costs of the hearing were also awarded against the club, sending the total debt over £300,000.

The official Macclesfield site describes the fine as draconian, and admits the club faces insolvency as it cannot raise the money in less than six weeks. The site goes on to say the breaches occured under previous owners and the current owners should not have to pay.

A fans and shareholders meeting has been called for Wednesday to review the implications of the decision. Macclesfield have the right to appeal but are yet to make a decision. Should the club enter administration, they would automatically drop to the bottom of the league, with the 10 point penalty deducted, seven points adrift of safety - but they would face explusion from the FA for non-payment of fines.

Last Home Game before New Year

This evening's LDV game is the last chance to see Hereford United in action at Edgar Street this year. The next home game isn't until January 2nd against Forest Green.

After last Saturday's seven goal feast against Bognor Regis, supporters will be hoping that the Bulls will go into the game with plenty of confidence.

Scunthorpe are the visitors and the prices to see the game have been reduced.

Seating: Adults £10 OAP's and Juniors £5
Standing: Adults £6 OAP's and Juniors £3

The forecast for this evening is that it will not be as cold as the last few evenings have been. Temperatures are expected to be around 5C.

And to add to the atmosphere, a certain Mr Woolmer is listed to referee the game.

Meanwhile according to the Official Scunthorpe Website, Irons striker Steve Torpey beleives that victory for his side this evening will help restore confidence at Glanford Park.

Torpey was a late substitute last Friday when the Irons defeated Nottingham Forest.

"It was a good win against Nottingham Forest and it is nice to be back. It has been 16 long weeks.

"We have had two wins on the spin now and will be going to Hereford to get another and boost confidence even more."

Conferencefootball.tv To Go Pay Per View

A freelance employee of Conferencefootball.tv has claimed that the service will go pay per view early next year.

Keith Hall aka Skeets, a freelance cameraman and live commentator for the conferencefootball.tv site and also a contributor to BBC Hereford and Worcester's sports coverage, claims in a post on the official Hereford United forum that the current problems were due to "hardware problems in the London studio" but added that the site was likely to go pay per view before the end of the season, with the current providers holding a contract with the Conference until the end of next season.

Hall speculated that the pay per view cost could be in the region of £2.99 per month, or a £14.99 "season ticket", including live games. The previous incarnation of the site suffered badly from security issues that scuppered their pay per view aspirations as even the most inexperienced PC user could gain free access to the content. Whilst security of the clips on the site has improved it remains to be seen whether the security or the quality of the content will be of a sufficient standard to warrant a price tag.

UPDATE: The site has gone pay per view with immediate effect at £4.99 per month or £14.99 per season.

McIndoe and his last chance

A few years ago Michael McIndoe was out of football. Graham Turner, the Hereford United manager, offered him a job and since then he has hardly looked back. Now he is in the Doncaster team that will face Arsenal on Wednesday evening.

In todays Times, there is an article about McIndoe written by Rick Broadbent. Below are extracts.

It is no surprise that Michael McIndoe is a man in a hurry. By the time he was barely 20, he was a hard-drinking gambling man spending Millennium eve in The Priory hospital and wondering how to raise £50,000 to pay off the loan sharks. It is testament to his strength of character that he is now a model professional and arguably the best-kept secret outside the top flight.

That cover has been blown a little of late as the Scot's raw speed and polished skills have helped Doncaster Rovers into the quarter-finals of the Carling Cup. He believes Arsenal will send an Under-23 side to Belle Vue on Wednesday, where a home win will force John Ryan, the Doncaster chairman, to cancel the trip to Dubai that he has booked for the players in semi-final week. McIndoe cannot wait.

It was as a teenager at Luton Town when things began to veer off course.

"In Scotland there tends to be a drinking culture, but it started to take a toll on my performances," he said. "I was drinking every day, all day, all night, lager, wine, whatever I could get my hands on. It got to the stage where none of the players were allowed out with me. The manager (Lennie Lawrence) said, 'keep away from Michael, he's a bad egg at the moment'."

Lawrence threatened McIndoe with the sack - "he was trying to help me" - if he did not sort himself out, resulting in a 28-day stay in the Priory over Christmas and Millennium new year. That was when Paul Merson, another gifted player plagued by demons, paid him a visit. "I'd never met him but he came down and the penny dropped," McIndoe recalled. "I'd lost my job, my girlfriend, my driving licence and had huge gambling debts. He sat me down and said 'maybe you have a problem?' When the doctor says you?ll be dead if you keep doing this for ten years it also sways the mind."

A confidentiality agreement means that McIndoe cannot say what the treatment entailed, but he paraphrased it neatly. "They take your heart out and put it back in again. It was the best thing in my life."

It was not an easy road back to redemption. He got out on January 13, 2000 and Lawrence said that he would involve him on the bench, but would not pick him for the rest of the season. The Luton fans were unforgiving. "I was walking down the tunnel at half-time at Cardiff and the referee was behind me," McIndoe said. "The fans were booing and spitting. I thought the ref had been doing OK and then I realised it was all for me."

Lawrence sacked him a few months later because of the problem with the fans. McIndoe took four months out, got his golf handicap down and fell back in love with football. Merson, Lawrence and his friend, Matthew Upson, the Birmingham City defender, helped him, but mud stuck and "nobody would touch me".

Finally, he got a call from Hereford United, the Nationwide Conference side. "It was for £375 a week, but I said I don't care what the contract says, I'll sign," McIndoe said. "Graham Turner, the manager, put me in a lovely farmhouse, with no casinos or pubs nearby, and said 'you've got your chance - screw it up and you're out the door'."

He grabbed the chance. It took him until he was 23 to pay off his debts, but he has not drunk since 1999 and it angers him when people still think of him as the wayward teen.

McIndoe was signed from Luton Town by Graham Turner, and was ever present during his spell at the club. A breath of fresh air on the left wing, he made thirty three appearances and scored two goals before leaving the club in February 2001 when finances were tight. Yeovil Town bought him for £25,000 and the youngster had a 25% sell-on clause in his contract so Hereford could benefit financially from any further deal.

Postcript: HU-FC.co.uk published an article on McIndoe and his problems shortly after he arrived at Edgar Street. The site was contacted by Hereford United and asked to drop the article which it promptly did. The revelations about McIndoe's drinking and rehabilitation had upset both the player and the club.

Wrexham Stadium Fight Setback

Wrexham have been dealt a blow in their fight for survival after an appeal court judge allowed an appeal over the ownership of the Racecourse stadium by owner Alex Hamilton to be heard.

In October Wrexham and their Administrators, Begbies Traynor, won a High Court action against Hamilton over what was deemed an illegal transfer of the deeds of the stadium to one of Hamilton's companies, CrucialMove.

Now an Appeal Court judge has allowed an appeal to be heard early in the New Year after a hearing today. The decision threatens the future of Wrexham, as the club have until June to come out of Administration before they face being kicked out of the Football League and do not have the ability to do so until a takeover deal is finalised.

Several interested parties, including a consortium of local businessmen including former director Neville Dickins, are waiting in the wings to complete a deal but cannot until the stadium issue is resolved.

Bulls To Face Halifax Or Southport In Trophy

The Bulls will travel to either Halifax or Southport in the Second Round of the FA Trophy.

The pair drew 0-0 on Saturday at The Shay, and are due to replay tomorrow night while the Bulls face Scunthorpe in the LDV Trophy.

The Second Round match is due to be played on January 14th, three days before the Bulls are travelling to Southport in a league match.

Conferencefootball.tv Facing "Technical Problems"

Following a lack of highlights from last weeks Conference programme, Conferencefootball.tv have now issued a very brief statement declaring "technical problems" have stopped them updating the site.

In October, the site pleaded for 10,000 fans a month to support the service by using the Totalbet affiliate service advertised on the site in order to keep the site free of charge. That plea would have required nearly half of all regular Conference match supporters to frequent the site monthly.

While their highlights packages have received praise, the service has come under constant criticism from fans over their attempts to broadcast live matches. Several games have been broadcast only in part due to technical errors and bandwidth problems, and Stevenage Chairman Phil Wallace refused their cameras entry to Broadhall Way for their announced live coverage in September, refusing to give free access to the service after 18 months of trials.

The service was relaunced in the summer of 2004 after the original subscription site went bust owing hundreds of subscribers money. That site posted messages noting "technical problems" just before it went down permanently.

There is the possibility that the Conference has finally found a return to mainstream television, having briefly had a Sky Sports highlights package before the internet streaming experiments started. This site speculated in October that the requirement to spread Premiership rights over several broadcasters would lead to television opportunities for the Conference.

Good at both Ends of the Game says Turner

Graham Turner, the Hereford United manager, told the Non-League Paper his view of yesterday's Trophy game.

"We were very good at the start and at the end. It's just the bit in between we have to work on!

"There was a long period at 2-1 when we looked quite anxious. We had a few scares, but it was good to watch us passing the ball around and opening Bognor up in the last third.

"Bognor are a very energetic team and they've got some decent players, but our reports were that they would tire a bit because of the energy they use."

Rocks manager, Jack Pearce, noted that after the Bulls scored their penalty the game was over.

"They took their chances, we made too many mistakes and ended up getting a spanking."

Grayson Still Scoring At 41

Former Bull Neil Grayson remains a regular goalscorer for Stafford Rangers at the grand old age of 41.

With the Bulls about to face Scunthorpe's 40 year old winger Peter Beagrie, the man 12 months his senior was man of the match and bagged a double in Stafford's 4-2 win over Lancaster to take his seasons tally to 11 as top scorer.

Manager and fellow ex-Bull Phil Robinson, a mere pup at 38, was full of praise for Grayson: "It was a brilliant performance again, and his energy levels are fantastic. He led by example for the whole of the game."

Grayson has scored over 150 goals in 450 games in a career that started with his works side 15 years ago.

Conference News Round-Up

Canvey striker Lee Boylan faces another spell on the sidelines after being knocked out after colliding with a post while scoring in the win over Kingstonian. Former Exeter assisitant boss Gary Bennett has been charged with making fraudulent benefit claims and is due in court on Tuesday. Kidderminster have delayed their hunt for a new manager after cancelling a Friday board meeting with several of the directors unable to attend. Peter Davenport and Frank Stapleton have joined Jimmy Quinn in being linked to the job. Nuneaton have joined Burton in cashing in on the FA Cup. Their tie with Middlesboro now sees home ticket prices rise to as much as £25 for an ordinary £10 seat. Stevenage coach Lionel Perez is to face FA action once the Police conclude their investigations over his alleged assault of Northampton coach Dave Watson during the clubs FA Cup match two weeks ago.

LDV game on Tuesday

Scunthorpe United are the visitors to Edgar Street for the Quarter Final Northern Area LDV game on Tuesday Evening, kick-off 7.45pm.

The Irons defeated Halifax 3-1 last Tuesday in the previous round, the game having twice been postponed because of a frozen ground at the Shay. Last Friday Scunthorpe met Nottingham Forest at Glanford Park and put three goals put them with only one in reply.

Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws was said to be chuffed to bits after seeing his side end their five game losing streak in the League. However they have progressed in both the FA Cup and the LDV, albeit against Conference opposition.

"It was important we got a result after last week's diabolical display at Barnsley," said Maws. (The Irons lost 5-2)

"We were organised, angry and physically on top of our game. The team as a whole were together and we knew if we made them work hard under pressure they would crack.

"We looked solid at the back, our counterattacking and set plays were huge bonuses and this sets us up nicely to win games.

"We showed great mental strength to respond to their penalty and go on to win the game."

The win over Forest was their first double of the season. However the Irons lie 15th in League One and have only won three of their away games to date. And according to the Iron-Bru website, manager Laws isn't flavour of the month at present.

In a poll conducted last week, 52.6 per cent of voters said that they did not back Laws as boss, while 40.3 per cent said they did.

7.1 per cent said they were unsure, and the website commented that is clear there is a big divide among fans over whether Laws is the man to keep Scunthorpe away from relegation.

Laws will know about Hereford United having brought his side to Edgar Street in the LDV last season. However that time it was in the first round.

The Bulls won the game after a penalty shoot-out.

Craig Stanley put Hereford ahead after 30 minutes with a right foot shot from 20 yards, but Steve Torpey levelled with a header from a corner on 58 minutes.

Extra time came and went, so it all came down to penalties.

Danny Williams missed the first for the Bulls, but then Gould saved penalties from Rankine and Taylor. Robinson, Smith and Travis then all put their shots away into the back of the net. Finally Carey-Bertram calmly tucked away the winning penalty into the bottom right corner to give United a 4-3 victory on penalties, and a place in the second round.

There will be some consolation to the loser on Tuesday. Hereford will receive £6,000 if they are defeated, whilst Scunthorpe will receive £8,000 if they are the losers.

Trophy Draw Tomorrow

The draw for the second round of the FA Trophy will take place tomorrow.

A win for Hereford United in this round is worth £5,000.

The game will take place on Saturday January 14th.

Below is an up-to-date list of fixtures for the next few weeks:

Biggest defeat for 46 years

Bognor slipped to their heaviest home defeat for 46 years this afternoon when Hereford dumped them out of the FA Trophy reports the Official Bognor Website.

Rocks started poorly and were 2-0 down after 12 minutes, with Bulls having scored through Andy Williams and Adam Stansfield.

Bognor hit back almost straightaway, and scored with their first real attack of the game after 15 minutes when Richard Hudson's cross from the right was met by Dan Beck at the far post, who shot home.

Rocks improved thereafter, and almost drew level on 54 minutes when Beck's header - again from a Hudson centre - was superbly tipped round the post by Hereford keeper Craig Mawson.

Hereford added the killer third after 62 minutes when Rob Purdie scored from a twice-taken penalty, given after Tom Elphick was harshly adjudged to have handled Purdie's cross.

Then Bulls hit Rocks with four goals in a 12-minute spell, scored by Guy Ipoua, Craig Stanley, Purdie and Jamie Pitman.

FA Trophy Results Round Up

Locally, Worcester join the Bulls in the Second Round after a 1-0 win over Hayes, and Kidderminster enjoyed a 4-0 win over Scarboro.

Five Conference clubs fell at the first hurdle with two, Altrincham and Stevenage, falling to other Conference clubs. Burton lost 1-0 at home to Worksop, and Cambridge United lost 3-2 at Dorchester, while York lost 2-1 at home to Northwich.

Our next league opponents, Forest Green, made it two wins out of two with a creditable 1-0 win at Weymouth, while Aldershot and Grays face a Tuesday replay after drawing 1-1.

In League One, our LDV opponents Scunthorpe ended a run of five straight league defeats by beating Notts Forest 3-1.

Bognor on the Rocks after Bulls score Seven

Hereford United will receive £4,000 for defeating Bognor Regis 7-1 this afternoon in the FA Trophy First Round game.

Andy Williams put the Bulls ahead after five minutes. He cut inside from the right and finished with a left foot shot from about 25 yards.

Second goal for the Bulls came on fourteen minutes from Adam Stansfield who ran through the inside left channel before shooting with his right foot from around the edge of the box.

Bognor replied three minutes later when Dan Beck turned the ball into the goal from close quarters.

The home side have had two penalty appeals turned down.

Half Time: Bognor Regis 1 Hereford United 2

Andy Ferrell was been booked for a late challenge early in the second half.

Hereford were awarded a penalty for hand-ball on 62 minutes. Rob Purdie got the ball into the back of the net but the referee told him to take it again. This time Purdie converted into the top corner.

Craig Stanley booked for dissent.

Guy Ipoua, after a good run, made it 4-0. Stanley made it five fom ten yards out just two minutes later.

Jamie Pitman replaced Ipoua as Williams moved up-front with Stansfield.

Purdie made it six after the Rocks goalkeeper made a meal of clearing a shot.

On 84 minutes Pitman made it seven with a lob over the top of the goalkeeper.

Graham Evans and Danny Carey-Bertram came on late as subs.

This report was compiled from various sources.

Stansfield and Travis to start

Both Adam Stansfield and Simon Travis are to start for Hereford United this afternoon.

Stansfield will partner Guy Ipoua up front and Travis comes in for Ryan Green who has a viral infection.

Andy Williams also gets a start as does Craig Mawson. They replace Jon Brady who is suspended and Wayne Brown who is cup-tied.

Line up: Mawson, Travis, Mkandawire, Beckwith, Jeannin, Purdie, Ferrell, Stanley, Williams, Ipoua and Stansfield.

Subs: Bagnell, Evans , James, Pitman and Carey-Bertram.

Turner would love to get to Villa Park

Graham Turner, the Hereford United manager, thinks that Bognor will be fancying their chances of causing an upset tomorrow when Hereford United travel to the South Coast for the FA Trophy game.

"I expect to go there, put on a performance and win the game," a confident Turner told Trevor Owens of BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"But we know it won't be easy. We've had them watched. There are certain threats they have got in their side, but obviously at the level they are playing at there are a number of weaknesses. And we have got to exploit their weaknesses.

"Same sort of level as Cambridge City. We went and disposed of Cambridge City in the FA Cup and we've got to do the same to Bognor in the Trophy. And we are quite capable of doing that.

"(The Trophy) is a welcome distraction. I think winning becomes a good habit. As well as the Trophy game we have also got Scunthorpe coming up next Tuesday in the LDV.

"I think they are nice games, particularly the Scunthorpe game. It's a nice game to look forward to. It takes the pressure off the quest for League points. I think players enjoy playing in knock-out competitions

"Hell of a long trip down to Bognor both for the team and the supporters. But having made that journey, you've got to go and treat it right, do it right and make sure we are in the hat for the next round.

"I think the Trophy has lost a little bit of its glitter for Conference clubs over recent seasons simply because of the effects of progressing in it have led to fixture congestion towards the end of the season.

"We certainly want to progress in it. It's time we reached a final of some sort. We would love to get to Villa Park towards the end of the season."

Bulls in the gambling history books

Question: What's the connection between Jukka Honkavaara and Hereford United?

Answer: Honkavaara placed the first ever online sports bet with a company called Intertops, and his bet was on the FA Cup game between Tottenham Hotspur and Hereford United.

On January 17th 1996 he placed his fifty dollar bet on bet on the outcome of a football match between the two UK teams. He came away with fifty two dollars, a profit of just two dollars.

Today, Intertops is a multi-million dollar business offering over a thousand online betting options each day to sports fans just like Jukka Honkavaara. And they are no doubt very thankfull he started the whole thing off with a bet involving Hereford United.

Meanwhile the Hereford Journal reports that the club shop sold 250 copies of the new book '50 Hereford United Greats' by Denise Powell and Dave Edge, last Saturday. Copies are available at £12.99.

Team News: Bognor vs Bulls

Bognor have no new injury worries for the FA Trophy game. Star forward Luke Nightingale remains sidelined with an ankle injury.

The Bulls have no new major worries with Stacy Coldicott still the only long term absentee. Two changes will be made with Jon Brady suspended after five yellow cards, and Craig Mawson will replace the cup-tied Wayne Brown in goal while Darren Blewitt, Simon Travis, and Adam Stansfield all proved their fitness in Monday's reserve match with Bristol City. Stansfield is likely to start in place of Graham Evans, while Simon Travis may replace Ryan Green who is struggling with injury.

Match Odds (bet365): Bognor 2/1, Draw 11/5, Bulls 11/10.

I've never been to Bognor says Turner

Graham Turner has told the Worcester News that after the disappointment of losing to Stockport County in the FA Cup, the win against York was needed.

"We needed that after the performance against Stockport County," said Turner. "We needed a win in view of the changes. The players that came in did well and the players left out showed good attitude to the situation.

"It was three important points and the pressure is now off us to get more points over the coming week. We've got two cup ties to look forward to and the players can enjoy themselves.

"We have got a busy festive period, not just in cup competitions but in the league. We've got Exeter and Forest Green twice, so we must be looking to pick up points.

"But for now, our focus is on Bognor Regis and getting a result there.

"I've never been there before, but we've had Bognor watched against Weymouth. It's not going to be an easy cup tie.

"We've seen recently ourselves, playing teams from the same league, that it can be difficult. Cambridge City gave us a tough game, so we know what to expect.

"Bognor will try their hardest to cause an upset. We must go there and do the job properly."

Turner is likely to start Adam Stansfield tomorrow.

"Adam has not looked so sharp in training, but he went out against Stockport and again against York. He took his goal really well and I'm pleased for him.

"At the start of the season, you look at Adam and say he's got a realistic chance of getting us 20 goals for the season.

"That's his first goal of the season and we're in December. But he's come back from a hernia operation and we're hoping there's more to come from him."

Northwich Hit Out At Ticket Costs

Northwich Chairman Mike Connett has hit out at the FA and Sunderland after adult ticket prices for their trip to the Stadium Of Light in the FA Cup were reduced to £10.

Connett wanted £20 adult tickets, while Sunderland wanted £6 with £1 concessions. Connett claims the FA decision has cost the club £200,000: "Sunderland proposed ticket prices of £6 and £1, which I said was a waste of time. I said I'd accept £20 for adults and less for concessions. The FA have ruled that the prices should be £10 and £5, which I think is a disgraceful way to treat non-League football. I believe they have cost us £200,000 by going so far below normal prices. They underestimate us, which suits us fine. I fancy us to do well there".

The prices compare sharply with Burton's televised home tie with Manchester United - £30 for a Adult seat with £25 concessions, with £25/£20 to stand.

In other news the official Altrincham website http://www.altrinchamfc.co.uk/alty1.htm reports the other Man Utd - FC United of Manchester have posted adverts in the local press for a Chief Executive and Club Secretary with salaries of £25,000 and £18,000 a year. With both posts applicants must "demonstrate experience in activity within the football supporters' movement ideally at Manchester United Football Club". The club, barely six months old, share Gigg Lane with Bury but often dwarf their landlords' attendances despite playing several rungs down the ladder.

Smith may move to Weymouth

Former Hereford United mid-fielder Ben Smith could move to Weymouth in January.

27 year old Smith has found it difficult to keep a place in the Shrewsbury team this season and says he has attracted interest from the Terras.

"I am in and out of the team at the moment and playing in different positions when I am picked which isn't ideal," said Essex-born Smith who previously played for the Bulls.

"I am the type of player who needs to be playing regularly in what I consider my best position of central midfield and, having spoken to the manager, I don't think that's going to happen at the moment.

"I am out of contract at the end of the season and, at the moment, I wouldn't be confident of it being renewed.

"I can either wait until the end of the season when there are 600 players in the same boat or see what happens in January."
