Chester City On The Move?

Ever controversial Chester City Chairman Stephen Vaughan has applied to the Football League to stage the December 28th derby with Wrexham in Widnes - and the move could become permanent if Chester Council don't give Vaughan what he wants.

Vaughan, who has previously been linked with both Tranmere and Everton, purchased shared in Widnes Vikings Rugby League club recently and claims that Halton Council, who took over operation of their 14,500 capacity stadium in 1999, want a Football League side to share the ground.

Vaughan told the Chester Evening Leader: "I've had enough, Chester City brings in over £2m of revenue to the economy of Chester annually and gives regular entertainment to 3,000 of the ratepayers. I have ploughed in excess of £4m into Chester City and have had little help from the council during that time. You have to ask yourselves whether they want a football club in the city.

"The Halton council does all it can for Widnes Vikings. They want a Football League club and we are giving the idea of moving serious consideration."

Vaughan has previously complained about the restrictive clauses on the lease for the Saunders Honda (Deva) Stadium, limiting the possible income from non-footballing activities to help fund the club. However the Council have, so far, refused to alter the leases.
