LDV game on Tuesday

Scunthorpe United are the visitors to Edgar Street for the Quarter Final Northern Area LDV game on Tuesday Evening, kick-off 7.45pm.

The Irons defeated Halifax 3-1 last Tuesday in the previous round, the game having twice been postponed because of a frozen ground at the Shay. Last Friday Scunthorpe met Nottingham Forest at Glanford Park and put three goals put them with only one in reply.

Scunthorpe boss Brian Laws was said to be chuffed to bits after seeing his side end their five game losing streak in the League. However they have progressed in both the FA Cup and the LDV, albeit against Conference opposition.

"It was important we got a result after last week's diabolical display at Barnsley," said Maws. (The Irons lost 5-2)

"We were organised, angry and physically on top of our game. The team as a whole were together and we knew if we made them work hard under pressure they would crack.

"We looked solid at the back, our counterattacking and set plays were huge bonuses and this sets us up nicely to win games.

"We showed great mental strength to respond to their penalty and go on to win the game."

The win over Forest was their first double of the season. However the Irons lie 15th in League One and have only won three of their away games to date. And according to the Iron-Bru website, manager Laws isn't flavour of the month at present.

In a poll conducted last week, 52.6 per cent of voters said that they did not back Laws as boss, while 40.3 per cent said they did.

7.1 per cent said they were unsure, and the website commented that is clear there is a big divide among fans over whether Laws is the man to keep Scunthorpe away from relegation.

Laws will know about Hereford United having brought his side to Edgar Street in the LDV last season. However that time it was in the first round.

The Bulls won the game after a penalty shoot-out.

Craig Stanley put Hereford ahead after 30 minutes with a right foot shot from 20 yards, but Steve Torpey levelled with a header from a corner on 58 minutes.

Extra time came and went, so it all came down to penalties.

Danny Williams missed the first for the Bulls, but then Gould saved penalties from Rankine and Taylor. Robinson, Smith and Travis then all put their shots away into the back of the net. Finally Carey-Bertram calmly tucked away the winning penalty into the bottom right corner to give United a 4-3 victory on penalties, and a place in the second round.

There will be some consolation to the loser on Tuesday. Hereford will receive £6,000 if they are defeated, whilst Scunthorpe will receive £8,000 if they are the losers.
