Stockport County first met Hereford United over 30 years ago and have defeated the Bulls three times at Edgar Street.
This edited history lesson comes from the Official Stockport County Website:
The first meeting between the two sides ended 1-1 at Edgeley Park in December 1972. The return fixture at Edgar Street was in April with the Bulls winning 1-0 in front of 10,612 fans on their way to promotion.
Hereford went up to Division Three, and then Division Two but two successive relegations followed and they found themselves back in the basement division for the start of the 1978-79 season. And this heralded the start of a long run of fixtures between the two clubs as both Hereford and County stayed as Fourth Division opponents until Danny Bergara led us to promotion in 1990-91.
Back in Division Four, Hereford did the double over us in 1978-79, without conceding a goal, and although County won the next game in October 1979 they failed to beat Hereford in the next five meetings after that.
The 1982-83 season was a better one for County as an own goal and a Trevor Phillips strike gave us a 2-1 win before we drew 0-0 at Edgar Street later in the campaign.
The 1983-84 and 1984-85 seasons saw both sides win their home fixtures and in 1985-86 Hereford won the home meeting once again although the game at Edgeley Park finished 1-1.
Strangely, the trend completely changed after this as five of the next six meetings ended in away wins.
The Bulls won 2-1 at Edgeley Park in November 1986 but County gained revenge later in the season as goals from Wayne Entwistle and Ernie Moss gave us our first ever win at Hereford and another important three points during our 'Great Escape' season under Colin Murphy.
Hereford won at Edgeley Park in October 1987 but revenge was sweet once again as Entwistle scored again at Edgar Street to secure a 1-0 victory in March 1988.
The 1988-89 season saw Hereford do the double over us for a second time, with a couple of 2-1 victories, but the following season; the roles were reversed as the Hatters achieved their first double against the Bulls on their way to the Fourth Division Play-Offs, both games again ending 2-1.
The 1990-91 season was the last time we met Hereford as County started their climb through the divisions with promotion to Division Three and Hereford stayed in the basement division for a few seasons before dropping out of the Football League.
County drew 0-0 at Edgar Street in September before recording their biggest victory, 4-2, against the Bulls in March at Edgeley Park.
Saturday's game is a first as it will be the first time the two clubs have met in any of the Cup competitions.
