League Managers Last 21 Months

A report into the hiring and firing of managers shows that the average football manager lasts just 21 months.

40 were sacked in the last season, compared to 34 the season before - reducing their 'life expectancy' by 11 months since 1993. Many managers work either without a contract, or only one year deals.

John Barnwell, chief executive of the League Managers Association, said: "There is a major concern that the average life expectancy of a manager at a football club has fallen dramatically from 2.7 years in 1992 to 1993 to 1.8 years last season. Stability is invariably the key to success in any industry and football is no different."
