Giles pleased for second chance.

Martyn Giles, the Hereford United defender, is happy to be back in League football after being released by Cardiff City three years ago and then moving to Carmarthen.

Martyn Giles - pre-season

In an interview in today's league Paper, Giles remembers being on a subs bench with James Collins now with West Ham.

"You could be bitter, but what good would that do," said Giles.

"I never felt I ever got the run of games others enjoyed at Cardiff, plus a couple of injuries certainly didn't help my cause.

"I'll always be in (Carmarthen's) manager Mark Jones and coach Mark Aizlewood's debt.

"Mark Jones was never going to stand in my way when Hereford came in and Aize took me under his wing and nagged me into pumping weights in the gym on a daily basis.

"I put on over a stone and even shot up a couple of inches with my new physique. I am able to play comfortably in central defence - it's refreshing from being simply labelled a left-sided defender.

"Carmarthen were able to provide me with UEFA and InterToto Cup football and I felt I'd coped well with the matches against Longford and FC Copenhagen last year.

"I'd grown mentally stronger. If I'd developed my attributes sooner I may have still been at Cardiff but I'll never know.

"Mark Delaney came out of the League of Wales a few years ago and went on to make a career with Wales and Aston Villa, after Cardiff gave him a break."

Wayne Brown also gets a mention in the League Paper. The Hereford United goalkeeper kept the Bulls in last Saturday's game against Macclesfield with some fine saves.

Afterwards Brian Horton, the Macclesfield manager was sacked.

'Horton quipped that if Steve McClaren had been watching what transpired to be his final match as boss, against Hereford, their goalkeeper (Wayne Brown) would have been picked in the England squad.'
