Foster set for England

England face Spain this evening in an international friendly at Old Trafford, with Ben Foster making his debut in goal. Foster, 23, currently plays for Watford on loan from Manchester United, and has been a regular over the last two seasons at Vicarage Road, helping the Hornets to promotion via the play-offs last season.

It's been an excellent rise through the footballing pyramid for Foster, who started his career at RC Warwick. Stoke City snapped up Foster in 2002, but he only made his first Football League appearance in 2004/2005, when he played twice for Kidderminster Harriers, enduring two losses at Aggborough, against Shrewsbury and Boston, letting in five goals in the process.

However, Foster's fortunes were soon to change when he spent a highly successful loan spell at Wrexham. His debut for the Welsh outfit came against none other than Hereford United at Edgar Street, in the LDV Vans Trophy Semi Final, on the 25th January 2005. Wrexham won the game 2-1, despite Danny Carey-Bertram's early opener for The Bulls. Foster impressed, and spent the rest of the season at Wrexham, playing in the Vans Trophy Final against Southend. Wrexham won courtesy of goals from Juan Ugarte and Darren Ferguson, son of Sir Alex. The Man Utd boss was in attendance, Foster impressed and the rest is history.

Two years on from his debut for Wrexham, a cold night at Edgar Street, Foster lines up against some of the world's finest. Quite a rise!
