John Eustace, who spent a successful loan spell at Hereford United last season, is expected to stay at Stoke City next season.
Although he is yet to agree a deal, talks are planned with manager Tony Pulis next Monday.
The Stoke Sentinal says that Eustace's agent set up the meeting and Pulis is hopeful a deal can be worked out. Eustace was not offered a contract by the club last May.
"There are lots of players out there who haven't signed contracts. People are finding out what's out there and will play the field," said Pullis.
"But John knows what we are all about and if we can get to a deal that would be great.
"John has done exceptionally well. He has had a lot of time off, but his attitude is exceptional and he is a fantastic lad to have around the club.
"He is a smashing character and I would love to sign him again.
"At one stage I think even John himself found it very hard work and very difficult with all the set backs he suffered, but he has handled it all.
"I think a fit John Eustace can be a very important player for Stoke City."
