Nowhere to light up at Edgar Street

With the signs up, and the stewards briefed, the Smoking Ban at Edgar Street came into effect at last Friday's friendly.

Whilst the vast majority will cope with 105 or more minutes of abstinence, those who can't might be looking for a hiding place for a quick ciggy. But where will they go as Hereford United have followed the Football League request in full.

PLEASE NOTE THAT EDGAR STREET IS A NON-SMOKING STADIUM. IT IS AGAINST THE LAW TO SMOKE WHILST IN THE FOOTBALL STADIUM, INCLUDING THE VICE PRESIDENTS CLUB, CLUB SHOP AND LEGENDS.

So in theory there is nowhere to have a smoke other than outside the ground. But it is highly unlikely that someone in desparate need will be allowed out and back in during a game.

Perhaps it will make some supporters pack up smoking for good, but it might make one or two individuals wary about coming to the ground without somewhere to light up.

Help could be at hand if smokers can wait long enough. Before the proposals for the two new ends of Edgar Street are finally agreed, perhaps thought could be given to a small 'outdoor' area which could be provided for smokers.

Meanwhile the absence of the aroma of smoke, even when it's stale, does mask other aromas. As one supporter put it, the club may need to review its 'fresh air' policy in certain areas.
