Cup fever at Hereford says Addison

Former Hereford United manager Colin Addison has told the Western Mail that he is hoping the Bulls can pull off a win on Sunday against Cardiff City.

“All anyone is talking about up here is the Cardiff game, there is a real buzz around the place,” said Addison.

“Is it anything like ahead of when we played? Well, there is something in the air, a real sense of excitement and you know what the FA Cup is like, people are believing anything could happen on the day.

“Back in 1972 the replay had been postponed three times because of the weather and all anyone was asking was, ‘Will it be played this time? Will the match go ahead?’

“It was a fantastic day, one I don’t think anyone who was there will ever forget, the atmosphere was absolutely amazing, we felt like the whole town was behind us, which they were.

“People always go on about the pitch that day and it was a bit of a patch, but they forget we had held them up at Newcastle 2-2 and that was on a very good pitch.

“I’ve got a feeling this game with Cardiff is going to be a cracker too. Opinion would tell you the way Cardiff are playing at the moment they should take it easily. But this is a derby match effectively, there is history between the two sides.

“And of course this is the FA Cup, the oldest cup competition in the world, anything could happen, people are talking about an upset here and why not? Look back to 1972.”

Addison saw Cardiff's game at the Hawthorns last Sunday.

“It was a fantastic game of football and Cardiff were so unlucky not to come away with the win. If they play like that against Hereford, you would say they should take it at a canter, but we will see.

“After a slow start to the season, Dave Jones has got Cardiff playing some good football."

Addison also notes how well Hereford have been playing this season, despite the 'blip' last Monday at Chesterfield.

“Graham (Turner) has got them playing some good football, Cardiff will have to be very careful,” said Addison.

“Like Cardiff, Hereford pride themselves on being a passing side, they want to get it down and play and they can be very effective that way.

“The whole team has been performing, but you would look at skipper Ben Smith in midfield as a stand-out and Trevor Benjamin up front might cause a few problems too.”
