Contract at Hereford wasn't right for me - Butler

Martin Butler has told the Grimsby Telegraph why he decided not to come to Edgar Street after being offered a deal to move from Grimsby.

Butler has only made ten appearances for the Mariners to date and is currently out with back trouble which he says is because of all the driving he does. He used to play for Walsall and lives near Worcester.

"It's not been a great start to my Grimsby career, it has to be said.

"I have never had any problems with anyone at Grimsby, though, from the fans to the management and players.

"I know I can play at this level.

"I just didn't realise how much the travelling would affect me to be honest.

"It is a 180-mile trip to play games and train and it has taken its toll a lot.

"In hindsight, maybe I can look back and say I may have done things different when the move came about.

"But you live and learn in football.

"If everything could have been sorted out at Hereford, I would have considered the move.

"It would have made sense for me to be nearer home and not have that drive.

"But the contract wasn't right for me at this stage in my career and that is why I turned it down."
