Born on 20th November 1984 in Amsterdam, he signed a five-year contract with Anderlecht in 2001 after leaving the Ajax youth academy. In 2002, he scored the decisive goal against Stabæk IF that took Anderlecht through to the second round of the UEFA Cup. He also featured in the game when they beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in The Champions League.
In August 2004 he signed a one-year loan deal at Heracles Almelo and later MacDonald was again loaned abroad to the amateurs of German club Hamburger SV. MacDonald returned home in May 2006 to sign a three-year contract at AGOVV Apeldoorn and moved to West Bromwich Albion in 2007 signing a two and a half year deal in a £200,000 move after a year on loan with the Baggies. The 23 year old MacDonald today joined The Bulls on a month long loan deal following a recent similar spell back at Apeldoorn.
At the time of his signing at WBA, manager Tony Mowbray said...
"Talent is hard to come by and when you have got someone with the ability Sherjill has to beat an individual in a one-on-one situation, we shouldn't be discarding him."
"Sherjill has got talent and potential. We need to work with that, develop it and hopefully make him a big asset for our football club."
MacDonald came to the attention of WBA when playing against then Baggies' centre back Curtis Davies in an U21 game for Holland against England in November 2006.
