John Williams, who played for Hereford United in the mid-nineties, has been given a suspended prison sentance after breaking a non-molestation order. He admitted harassing his estranged wife in a hearing at Worcester Crown Court.
Williams, 40, of Hagley Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, had a 20-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months and was ordered to do 80 hours unpaid work.
His barrister said that Williams was £40,000 in debt but had recently entered into a sports management business.
Williams was signed by Hereford United from Wycombe Wanderers towards the end of the 1996/97 season when the Bulls vitally required goals to pull away from the bottom of Division Three. The striker had Premiership experience with Coventry and despite scoring three times, the Bulls were relegated.
He went on to play for Cardiff, York, Darlington, Swansea and Kidderminster Harriers.
