Thomas Cook, the holiday company that is featured on many football club official websites including that of Hereford United, is looking to close their Accrington call centre.
Some 260 staff are expected to lose their jobs and in an area like Accrington there isn't much alternative work. The knock-on effect of so many job losses could mean a drop in gates at the Fraser Eagle stadium which are already the lowest in the Football League.
"We are very concerned about the effect on an area like Accrington - it will have a huge impact on the regional economy,” said TSSA regional organiser, Kevin Lucas.
A Thomas Cook spokesperson said: "Thomas Cook would like to confirm that the proposal to close part of our operation at the Globe Centre in Accrington is not related to our trading or financial performance."
The company made a pre-tax loss of £163 million in the six months up to April 2008.
