Preview Bulls vs Southend

The Bulls entertain Southend United in a League One match at Edgar Street on Saturday.

It will be the Shrimpers first League trip to Edgar Street in nearly 20 years, winning their last trip 3-0 in the 89/90 season when they won promotion from Division 4, while the Bulls found comfort in the all too familiar 17th place. Back in September Lee Barnard's goal gave them all three points at Roots Hall - their sixth straight win over the Bulls.

The Bulls' abject display on Tuesday night was simply not good enough. A loss on Saturday could put the survival target into double figures - a psycological barrier that could be one too far for a young side. On paper, the task seems simple. If 52 points is the target, then 22 points -seven wins and a draw - are needed from the remaining 13 matches. It's not out of the question. The fans still believe.

When Southend acquired Theo Robinson, the Bulls top scorer last season, it was always likely to give their season a kick. He's now scored four times in eleven games, including goals in both the last two matches, with the Shrimpers winning five of the last six matches to reignite their play-off push but they remain five points short of seventh place, and will be eager to claim all three points on Saturday. Their biggest problem is a consistant striker. Veteran Dougie Freedman has struggled for fitness, leaving Barnard as their seven goal top scorer.
