BULLS EXTEND PAINT RUN

ARTICLE

Hereford entertained Aldershot this evening in a Johnstone's Paint trophy second round clash. John Trewick brought in Leon Constantine and Richard Rose for the injured Valentine and Dennehy, with Craig King bolstering the midfield and Sam Gwynne taking a more defensive role. The bench included Edrissa Sonko, and for the first time, Mathieu Manset, affectionately christened "The Beast" by the Meadow End.

The first real action was a trademark jinking run by Mark Marshall who shot weakly across goal with team mates better placed. Constantine was also wide with a long range effort. On 14 mins, Hereford conceded. Rose seemed to have closed down Hylton, but he managed to cut the ball back for the lively Hudson to fire home. Hereford continued to attack with Lunt, King and Walker creating several opportunities and forcing a string of corners. There was no little frustration as the Shots defenders got in vital blocks. At the other end, a corner conceded by Green was comfortably caught by Adam Bartlett.

Finally, on 41 minutes, the Bulls deservedly equalised. James Walker repeated his Saturday exploits, this time at the Blackfriars End, firing a 30 yard shot into the top corner after being fed by King. In the remaining minutes, United continued to press, with Constantine failing to get a meaningful head to a couple of inviting crosses.

The second half commenced with some exciting end to end football. Hudson and Soares were making some dangerous advances with Gwynne and Green soaking up the pressure well, whilst some intricate passing involving Pugh and Rose and some intelligent probing balls from Lunt were causing concern in the Aldershot area. Constantine cleverly set up Marshall who was wide with the shot and Lunt played Pugh through, only for the keeper to rush out to clear the danger.

After 72 minutes, Mathieu Manset replaced Constantine. Already a popular figure, he proved difficult to handle and almost scored with a shot inches too high. Green then made a surging run from the back and almost let in Pugh. Aldershot had a free kick in a dangerous position, the ball hit the wall and a header needed to be tipped over by Bartlett.

As the 90 minute mark approached, and the prospect of a penalty shoot out loomed, the Bulls appeared to have won the game. A rampaging run by the irrepressible King bobbled through to Manset who gleefully fired it home to set off wild celebrations for a dream debut. 4 minutes of stoppage time was announced, and in the third of these, Hereford continued their propensity for late concessions. Clever play by the impressive Hudson created the chance for Soares to fire home via the post. There was barely time to restart, and the game would be decided by penalties.

Marshall (after a retake), Pugh (reverting to a conventional style) and Lunt scored from the spot, whilst Soares, Hudson and Chalmersdid likewise for the Shots. King blazed wide and Blackburn's shot was well sved by Bartlett, leaving the score at 3-3. Up stepped Manset to find the net and Hylton's effort then crashed against the bar.

HEREFORD UTD WIN 4-3 ON PENS.
