Mike Margetts rues another late goal:
It’s telling statistic in this so far rather dismal season for Hereford United: no fewer than 7 of the 18 goals conceded in the League this season – that’s nearly 40 per cent – have come in the final ten minutes of their 11 matches so far.
In absolute terms this has cost five points – the two each dropped from winning positions at Aldershot and at yesterday’s game with Dagenham & Redbridge and the one lost in the dying moments at Grimsby.
Three other goals – two at Rochdale and one at home to Bury – were also conceded late on but when the team was already behind.
Had Hereford managed to see out the full 90 minutes without conceding those goals from winning positions, a total of 16 points would now be in the bag and glances would be towards the top end of the table rather than the bottom.
That’s how fine the margins are and perhaps supports John Trewick’s view that there is little to choose this season between those at the top and those struggling at the other end of the table.
It’s obviously very frustrating for the manager, the players and the fans but until the side can conform to the disciplines required to successfully manage a winning position, those last vital minutes could become an ongoing nightmare. Let’s hope not.
