Boothroyd Defends U's Style

Colchester boss Aidy Boothroyd has gone on the defensive after criticism of his side's style of play.

They were criticised after Tuesday's win over Stockport for their direct style, but Boothroyd told the press: "Football is all about winning, first and foremost.

"There are lots of intellectual derelicts professing to play a wonderful continental style passing game but we are all different. I'm the same as anyone as I watch a game at home when I'm not working and I think I know better than some people. That is why it is such a great game, but I've been in it too long to get upset by what other people think.

"The fans here are entitled to their views and they will be here a lot longer than I will be, so they are right to have their opinion. We want to give them something to talk about and something to be proud about. I understand that they want to see their team win every week and see fantastic football.

"But sometimes we all forget that there's actually a team of 11 men trying to stop you from doing that."

Boothroyd is expected to have defender Marc Tierney back after injury forced him to miss Tuesday's game, although Paul Reid will hope to keep him out after only recovering from injury himself to get through 90 minutes against Stockport. Ashley Vincent and Lee Beevers remain out, while Medy Elito is suspended.

All four of their loanees have been given clearance to play tomorrow, including strikers Kevin Lisbie and Kayode Odejayi. The pair have scored 16 times between them this season.
