The Bulls entertain Colchester on Saturday in the FA Cup, hoping to earn a big money Third Round tie.
The two sides last met in the FA Cup 12 years ago. Bulls physio Jamie Pitman, and the still playing Chris Hargreaves and Gavin Mahon were in the lower graded side that drew with the U's 1-1 at Layer Road before the Bulls dumped them out 5-4 on penalties. In the League last season the away side prevailed in both encounters with Colchester winning 2-0 at Edgar Street in April after the Bulls pulled off a shock 2-1 win at the Weston Homes Community Stadium the previous December.
The Bulls have had good fortune with cup draws so far this season. This will be their seventh cup game, of which five have seen the Bulls pulled out of the hat as the home side. They've already dealt with League One sides Leyton Orient, Bristol Rovers, and Charlton this season so the usual 'no fear' notices will be around Edgar Street this week - and with good reason. Those three sides scored just one goal in 270 minutes against the Bulls, so Colchester's scoring record - barring the opening day demolition of Norwich - of averaging only a goal a game on the road should give the Bulls heart.
The U's are third in League One on their home form rather than their travels. Take out that Norwich match, and they've won once on the road in eight games. In the last round they demolished Bromley 4-0. They have goals in their side - Kevin Lisbie has nine, but hasn't scored away since the opening day, while veteran battering ram Clive Platt and Kayode Odejayi have seven each, but only the ex-Cheltenham man is a regular scorer on the road with four from five. The one thing new boss Aidy Boothroyd has brought to the club is resilience. They've lost only one of fourteen games with the ex-Watford man.
Hereford United vs Colchester United, Edgar Street, Saturday 28th November, 3.00pm.
