Ryan Valentine admitted to BBC Hereford and Worcester that the game might have finished differently if he had scored the penalty when Marc Pugh was brought down by Magpie's keeper Kasper Schmeichel.
"If I'd have scored that penalty early on may be we could have gone on to win the game," said the Hereford United defender.
"But when I missed it wasn't too long after that they nicked their first goal.
"They defended after that and limited our chances so well done to them.
"Marc Pugh has done well to get there before Schmeichel brought him done. The referee said the ball wasn't going towards goal, it was always going out of play.
"But in my view if the keeper comes out and he's last man and takes the forward down it's a straight red.
"We went in at half-time and thought there wasn't much in it the first half but them scoring within five minutes of the restart frightened us a little bit.
"They are a good side and they knew how to defend."
