Cash Flow Problems at Cheltenham

Cheltenham chairman Paul Baker has admitted that the postponement of Saturday's game against Hereford United has put added strain on the club's finances.

"Following the postponement of Saturday's high-profile fixture with near-neighbours Hereford, the club are clearly going to experience severe pressure on their cash flow, particularly following the earlier postponement of the Burton match," Baker told the Robins OS.

"While both matches have been rearranged, experience tells us that attendances at midweek fixtures are well below those on Saturdays. As a result the club not only suffers an immediate cash-flow issue but when the match is eventually replayed the gate receipts will be significantly lower.

"We would have expected a gate of over 4,000 on Saturday given the nature of the fixture and following two excellent away performances. The gate on a Tuesday could well be 1,000 less, resulting in a cash shortfall.

"The club is still evaluating the impact of Saturday's postponement. It will of course be doing everything it can to ensure business as usual and, while that will be a real challenge, the steps taken earlier in the season to reduce expenditure should help us to weather the storm."

Meanwhile three home games postponed probably means that income at Hereford United is currently around £50,000 less than it might have been.

Whilst, as at Cheltenham, some of that income will eventually be banked, there is likely to be a shortfall because of the change to Tuesday evening for the three postponed matches.
