John McCombe might be left out of Port Vale's starting eleven for tomorrow's League Two game against Hereford United.
The former Bulls defender was sent off in Vale's game against Northampton last month and has failed to regain his place on a regular basis.
"If you get suspended or lose your form, you've got a chance of losing your shirt – so don't lose it," said manager Micky Adams.
"We need people competing for shirts and we have that. John was a regular at the beginning of the season, but he isn't now. That's unlucky, but he has to get on with it.
"In the first half of the season he was as good as anybody in the team – he was reliable and part of a decent back three, but he's paid the price for that red card."
Another former Bull, Lee Collins, is expected to partner Gareth Owen at the heart of the Vale defence.
