News Round Up

With the League Two and League One seasons over there will be a lot of players released this week. Northampton have already said they will announce their retained list on Thursday. Rochdale have sold a club record 1,000 season tickets through the discount period that ended at the weekend.

Cheltenham have named Julian Alsop as their Player of the Year, earning more than twice the votes of any of his rivals. The veteran banana fetishist scored just four goals all season. Notts County have released eight players including ex-Bull Ade Akinbiyi, who made only one League start for the club. Also on the list are veteran keepers Kevin Pilkington and Russell Hoult, and striker Delroy Facey.

Trevor Benjamin was not part of the Wroxham side that was demolished 6-1 in the FA Vase final at Wembley. Whitley Bay scored the fastest goal in the new stadium after just 21 seconds. Shrewsbury have named Dave Hibbert as their Player of the Year. Walsall fans staged a sit-in after Saturday's match to complain about the lack of investment into the club. About 80 fans protested about chairman Jeff Bonser and the threats to fans in recent weeks.

Walsall have released seven players in addition to the two departures last week and the retirement of goalkeeper Clayton Ince. Among the seven are former Bury midfielder Dwayne Mattis. Dagenham face a fight to play two Danny Greens next season. Their current Danny Green is being watched by a string of clubs including West Ham, according to Sky Sports.

Cheltenham have released eight players following their latest dismal season. Among them is Player of the Year Julian Alsop and fellow striker Barry Hayles. They have offered new terms to ten others including keeper Scott P Brown. Burton have released five players, and given two more short term offers to prove their worth in pre-season. Among the five to go is veteran Darren Stride, who has made 654 appearances for the club. Keeper Kevin Poole, who kept a clean sheet against Grimsby and was named in the Team of the Week at the age of 46, has signed a new one year deal.

A mother is reported by the Lancashire Telegraph to be reporting Cheltenham stewards to Police after her Accrington supporting son was ejected from Whaddon Road at the weekend. The 15 year old was said to have received minor injuries and a ripped shirt after a minor incident, while several Stanley fans 'chose to leave the ground' after Police got involved when they tried to unfurl a banner in the second half.
