Turner Talks On Grimsby

Graham Turner has spoken to the Grimsby Telegraph about Grimsby and Conference football.

He told the paper: "It is a tough league to get out of. You have a lot of other ex-league sides in there. Clubs like Wrexham and one or two others make it even harder to bounce straight back. The standard is being raised every year by the quality of the clubs in the Conference.

"It's a difficult task to get promotion from there now, make no mistake about that. But Grimsby have got good support. I remember when we went up there with Hereford earlier in the season and they were having a bad time. We got beat 1-0, but even when we were on top and should have scored, the crowd really stayed behind the players. That impressed me a lot when the expectations there would be far greater than for a team like Hereford.

"I think if the crowd keep turning up in their numbers and get behind the players they have a good chance. I've got to say there were a sprinkling of very good players in the team. Whether some of those can be retained remains to be seen. It takes a lot of enthusiasm to bounce back.

"It took us a long time because we were in dire financial straits at the time. I don't think Grimsby are like that – I think it's a solid club. I was talking to the people at Darlington recently and it seems like they are going to maintain a good budget to give themselves a chance of coming straight back up.

"If Grimsby are right up there, which they should be, then they have every chance of bouncing back."
