Budgets are tightening across the Football League, with significantly less transfer activity than last term and off-field staff being warned their jobs are at risk.
Charlton have today warned a number of their staff they face redundancy after the club failed to return to the Championship at the first attempt. They follow Southend and Salisbury, from the last two weeks alone, in warning their administrative staff that there will be cuts. Tranmere have also axed coach Wayne Allison, a one-time Bulls target as a striker, because they cannot afford to carry two coaches next season.
However the more telling note comes with the earlier report of Crewe's playing budget being just £750,000. Last season, Barnet chairman Tony Kleanthous told the press his club was operating with a similar budget - one that left them perilously close to relegation. In the same interview he added that the average League Two budget was £1million.
That average figure is expected to fall sharply this summer, with the Bulls one of the few sides to at least hold their budget from the previous season.
