Turner in the Away Dug-out

Former Hereford United manager Graham Turner, now with Shrewsbury Town, will be in the away dug-out at Edgar Street on Saturday for the first time since 1989.

Hereford United's historian Ron Parrott explains:

Graham Turner played against Hereford United on several occasions but as a Manager it happened perhaps more often than you would think. Results as follows in chronological sequence:

1) 1980/81 - After drawing 2-2 at Gay Meadow in the 1/4 final of the Welsh Cup, United hosted the replay and thrashed the Shrews 5-0. Graham Turner was actually Player/Manager at the time but didn't play in the game and was so confident of victory that he missed the match because he was away on a scouting mission so I guess that it's fair to say that he didn't actually "sit" in the dug-out on that occasion.

2) 1986/87 - Graham was manager of Wolves when United beat them 2-0 in a Fourth Division fixture on Boxing Day 1986

3) 1987/88 - Wolves won 2-1 at Edgar Street on 29/08/87 in another Fourth Division fixture and interestingly, went on to win the Fourth Division title that season, thus becoming the first Club ever to win all four divisions of the Football League.

4) 1988/89 - The sides drew 2-2 at Edgar Street in the qualifying rounds of the Sherpa Van Trophy on 30/11/88.

5) 1988/89 - Later that same season, United lost 2-0 in the Southern Area Semi-Final and Wolves went on to win the trophy, thus becoming the first ever Club to win the FA Cup, Football League Cup and the Sherpa Van Trophy.

(BN Note: Just to complicate matters Jamie Pitman now uses what used to be the away dug-out before they were recently rebuilt. So there is a view Turner will be in what used to be the home dug-out on Saturday.)
