Graham Turner's failure to take Shrewsbury to League One in his first season back at the Shropshire club has hurt him.
However play-offs are difficult and Turner will remember it took three attempts when he was with Hereford United to get to a Conference play-off final.
"It will hurt over the weekend and it will hurt for some time," said Turner after Friday's second leg against Torquay.
"It just seems a whole season has gone to waste in two 90 minutes. It was probably a travesty we didn’t go up automatically
"But I’ve been in the game long enough to know nobody feels sorry for you."
Turner first took the Bulls to the play-offs in 2004. However Aldershot went through possibly because Hereford were down to ten men early in the second-leg when Andy Tretton was sent off for a professional foul.
A season later and Hereford couldn't cope with a very physical Stevenage in the play-offs.
However it was third time lucky for Turner at Hereford when in Spring 2006, the Bulls went through the play-offs, and then defeated Halifax at the Walkers Stadium.
