Matt Bailey is on trial with Crewe with the aim of getting back into league football after several seasons in the wilderness.
The 6ft 5in former Hereford United loanee impressed Crewe manager Dario Gradi before being released by former manager Steve Holland.
"Matt asked if he could come in on trial, knowing I need a centre half who can head the ball, and he can certainly do that," said Gradi as reported by the Crewe Chronicle.
"I would’ve liked to have kept him a bit longer (when he was released) because he’s outstanding in the air and a super lad.
"He’s had a couple years’ experience now, and had an outstanding game for Northwich against Charlton.
"If he can reach that level again he could be of some use for us."
Bailey joined the Bulls on loan from Crewe in late 2005. He made five appearances and scored one goal whilst at Edgar Street.
