Preview: Northampton vs Bulls

The Bulls travel to Sixfields on Tuesday night to face another of League Two's strugglers.

The two sides have met in each of the last three seasons after spending 12 years in different divisions aside from a pair of JPT matches, after spending ten years from the late 70's jousting on a regular basis in both League and Cup. Overall the Bulls lead by 22 wins to 15 from the previous 50 meetings. Last season's 4-3 comeback is the game foremost in Bulls fans' minds, but only James McQuilkin is likely to play any part in the game from the four goalscorers on either side.

The Cobblers' eternal dream, after joining the Bulls in relegation from League One, has been a swift return. This season, boss Gary Johnson has thrown every last penny the club can muster at a promotion tilt, but it's going horribly wrong for the former Yeovil boss at present. Since being appointed in March Johnson has won only seven of 30 matches, and his expensive side sit just two points ahead of the Bulls in 17th place. They have struggled up front, scoring just four times at home, with top scorer Adebayo Akinfenwa and second top scorer Aaron Davies both missing the last three games - all of which they've lost.

The Bulls have an ideal chance to put their foot firmly into safer waters as they travel cross-country tomorrow. In the five games since the Gillingham debacle the Bulls have kept three clean sheets, scored six goals, and collected eight of their thirteen points. A win on Tuesday could put the Bulls as high as 17th, with 20th their highest placing of the season after the narrow opening day defeat at Southend. Nathan Elder became just the seventh Bulls player to score this season with his strike on Saturday, with a defender yet to find the back of the net.

Northampton Town vs Hereford United, Sixfields, Tuesday 25th October, 7.45pm.
