Moncur remembers Losing to Hereford

Next Saturday Newcastle United travel to Manchester United and former Magpies captain, Bob Moncur was the last to lead his club to victory at Old Trafford. That was just after a certain FA Cup-tie defeat at Edgar Street in 1972.

"Hereford still rankles with me now," Moncur told the Chronicle.

"It just will not go away as the game gets shown every third-round day and that means you are not allowed to forget about it.

"It was also John Motson’s debut behind a microphone, so that adds to it.

"Looking back we should have won by a country mile, we had so many chances but just could not put them away.

"You have to move on, though, and we did going to Old Trafford. The key is not to be intimidated by the crowd. After Hereford, we were on a downer but bit by bit we raised our spirits.

"They were right on our backs chanting ‘Hereford, Hereford’ after our cup exit but if you stand up to that and play your football you can succeed.

"For me there is no better feeling than getting on the bus after beating Man United in their own backyard, certainly better than getting on the bus having lost to Hereford."
