Statement from Herefordshire Council about Market Site

Herefordshire Council have released a statement about the old livestock market site which is situated close to the home of Hereford United football club.

Preparatory work will begin on Hereford’s Old Market site on 1st October 2012. This will ensure the site is prepared and safe for construction which will hopefully begin later this year. This significant step has been taken following the positive news that Herefordshire Council, Stanhope plc and British Land plc have exchanged contracts for the funding agreement for the redevelopment of the only new retail and leisure scheme to open in the UK in 2014.

Councillor John Jarvis, leader of Herefordshire Council responded to this announcement saying:

“I am delighted that that contracts have been exchanged over the Old Livestock Market site and that work will finally begin to prepare the site for development.

"This is a huge vote of confidence in the city and in the county. It is a vital part of the Council’s strategy to build a thriving economy in Herefordshire.

"It has been very tough to get to this stage and I’d I like to thank everyone for their patience and commitment. There is more hard work yet to do but the fact that site preparation is taking place this week is a real boost for the county.

"I want to make sure that across Herefordshire people have access to good quality jobs, shopping and entertainment. This huge development is just one piece in a wider programme of investment Herefordshire Council is making across the whole of the county”
