It's not April 1st but a story about locals lighting bonfires near Whaddon Road, the home of Cheltenham Town, takes some believing.
When the Robins recently played Exeter City, players and supporters were engulfed in smoke from a near-by garden.
Cheltenham directors are said to have spoken to one local resident about the fires.
"Obviously we don't want smoke coming onto the pitch during games,"said a Cheltenham spokesman.
"It's happened a couple of times now. The directors have spoken to the man involved on one occasion.
"He was very polite and agreed to put the fire out straight away."
One supporters told the Gloucestershire press how bad the smoke was.
"It was right at the end of the game and smoke was coming onto the pitch. It was quite thick.
"I don't know if it was done deliberately. But it's pretty obvious when a match is going on, so it seems an odd time to light a bonfire."
It's understood that the smoke affected the home supporters more than the away following.
Finally a word from the Robins to the locals.
"We would just urge people to be considerate and think about the timing of their bonfires."
Hereford United will travel to Whaddon Road in three weeks time for a 2nd Round FA Cup-Tie.
