Gravesend have an impressive home record

Graham Turner

Graham Turner is well aware that Gravesend have an impressive home record but he says that if Hereford United perform at their best they are capable of getting the right result.

"I'm told they have not lost at home since we beat them quite sometime ago so we know we are in for a tough game," Turner told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"But if the determination amongst the players is to put what we have done in training into practice at Gravesend then I think we have a good chance of getting a good result."

As reported in our match preview Hereford are expected to be without Hyde and Purdie. There is also a doubt over Mkardawire.

Tom Smith could get his first start of the season.

Bulls might get to Europe

Nothing is confirmed as yet, but there is a possibility of Hereford United playing in Europe if they win the Conference Challenge Cup.

Confguide are suggesting that at a meeting of the Conference today the Directors will discuss the following:

From the Fifth Round onwards the Competition may be reformatted with the final rounds held over until the first week in June, and subject to acceptance of two invited international clubs from European Countries who will be included in the competition from the appropriate level of competition in that country. The Board of Directors reserve the right to amend the format of the competition until the commencement of the season.

Confguide have also reported that the squad budget rules are basically unchanged for this season.

Bulls out to sink Gravesend's Fleet

Hereford United will look to kept their unbeaten away record intact when they travel to Gravesend. The Fleet will prove a very hard test for Hereford as they are currently on an amazing unbeaten run of eighteen games. Ironically, their last defeat was against the Bulls in the corresponding fixture last season in February.

Gravesend & Northfleet are in decent form at home, having won four and drawn two of their last six games, These high-scoring games have yielded a total of 14 goals for the The Fleet, with 5 goals against.

The Fleet still have injury concerns over Jimmy Jackson and Andy Drury, who sustained a heavy knock during last weeks 2-1 victory over Stevenage Borough. And Graham Porter will not feature in the Gravesend team as the defender has been ruled out with a calf injury for two weeks.

Hereford's away form is equally impressive, with an unbeaten run in the last six, four of them victories. These six games have produced a glut of goals, with the Bulls scoring 16 and conceding 4.

Andy Ford, Gravesend's manager, is refusing to get carried away with the brilliant start his side has made. They are third in the table at the moment. "We have had a good, solid start but I have always said that we should be judged at the end of September," He told BBC Sport.

"We play Stevenage, Hereford, Barnet, Dagenham and Accrington, who are all good, solid Conference sides. If we come away with good results from that month's fixtures then a few people can get out of their chairs and maybe have a shout, but it will still be early."

Hereford have a slight concern over the fitness of Tamika Mkandawire, who has a hamstring strain. Tom Smith will be on hand to take his place should the opportunity arise. Danny Carey-Bertram is back to full fitness, but Rob Purdie is yet to resume training so will again miss out. Graham Hyde is not expected to travel due to illness.

The Bulls will be going to Stonebridge Road hoping to leave with all three points given their superb away form. However, the Fleet will surely feel that they can give Hereford a good game, and may expect to take something from the game given they are on a great run and as they are playing at home.

Directions to Gravesend

It's a long way to Gravesend from the Hereford area but the ground is fairly easy to find with good parking close by. And there should be a reasonable following of Bulls supporters with a number of London and Home-Counties based fans expected to attend.

DIRECTIONS BY ROAD (from Confguide)

From the M25 take the A2 coastbound. Take the second exit (B262) and turn left at the top of the slip-road.

Go across the first roundabout into Springhead Road. Follow road across one roundabout until you reach a T-Junction. Turn left into Northfleet High Street.

Follow Northfleet High Street until you come to the top of Stonebridge Hill. Down the hill and the ground is at the bottom on the right. The Car Park is at the far end of the ground, or you can park in the industrial estate opposite.

DIRECTIONS BY RAIL

The nearest station is Northfleet which is only about 200 yards from the ground. As you leave the station go (more or less) straight ahead until you reach the main road (EuroKebab on your left). Turn left and walk down the hill and the ground is on your right.

Alternatively, you can go to Gravesend Station and get a bus to the ground. Come out of the station on the Town side and turn right. There are some bus stops just by the station. You can catch a 480 which will drop you outside the ground.

Back the Bulls Lottery and Bricks

This article is from Hereford United.

As you may have seen in the Halifax match programme the club are offering fans the chance to buy a brick with their names on it for the new changing rooms extension that is being built at the moment. The cost of a brick with your name on is just £25. Details can be found by calling the club on 01432 276666 or calling in at the office in Blackfriars Street, Hereford. The bricks will be placed in the reception/foyer area of the new building.

The good news for those fans that have been paying into the Back The Bulls Lottery (Previously named The Save The Bulls Fund) is that they will receive a brick in the wall for free as a thankyou from the club for their continued support of the Bulls Fund/Lottery over the last three years. Obviously there has to be a cut off point regarding this and that has been set as the end of this month.

If you are one of the fans that presently pay into the Lottery (previously Save The Bulls Fund), and you would like your name on a brick in the wall, then please e-mail us at this address, backthebulls@herefordunited.co.uk , and give your bank name (as is shown on the bank statement) and the name, if different, you would like on your brick.

Look out for a sparkly Back The Bulls Lottery poster around the ground in the near future!

Cheers

We played poorly

Writing in his weekly column in the Hereford Times, Graham Turner admitted that his side played poorly last Saturday.

"One or two of the players were not on top of their game last Saturday. I don't think that the newcomers had a bearing on the result.

"We are as fit, if not fitter, than last season. We've done the tests to prove it and we know the players are in good physical shape."

Turner says his concern is with the number of goals conceded.

"We have kept one clean sheet which equates to seven in the season and that's not good enough.

"You don't pick out indivduals, although there has been some poor individual defending."

But at the end of his column, he suggests that it is not the time to panic.

Meanwhile the reserves lost 2-0 to Stafford Rangers last night.

And the club has confirmed to Bulls News this morning that the Youth Team are to play at Bridge Street Park, Leominster this Saturday against West Brom, kick-off 11am.

Deals confirmed by Turner

New deals for both Johnathan Gould and Mark Robinson have been confirmed by Graham Turner in this morning's Hereford Times.

Gould will be at Edgar Street until at least October 11th, as reported on Bulls News last Tuesday and Robinson has agreed a season-long contract as suggested by Bulls News last Saturday.

As regards Gould, Turner said: "There are still issues to be resolved between Johnathan and Preston."

Meanwhile Tamika Mkandawire is reported to have a slight hamstring strain, Rob Purdie has not yet started training due to ankle and groin problems, but Danny Carey-Bertram is back with the squad.

"He has joined in training and looks fully fit," said Turner.

Parry comes on as Sub

Paul Parry came on for Wales in the 63rd minute of the action-packed international at Cardiff this evening.

The result will be a disappointment to him as ten-man Wales could only draw 2-2 against nine-man Northern Ireland.

Man of the Match was Tony Capaldi who spent a loan spell at Edgar Street several seasons ago.

Capaldi joined Hereford United in September 2001.

Just eighteen at the time, Tony joined Hereford United from the Birmingham City youth academy to cover during an injury crisis. Goalkeeper Neil Barnes had played a game for United from the same academy several weeks previously and so manager Graham Turner decided to maintain links with the side. Capaldi is a left back and ended up playing twelve successful games for Hereford.

Reserves in action tonight

Hereford United's reserve team will be in action this evening against Stafford Rangers reserves at Edgar Street with a 7.30pm kick-off.

The reserves compete in the Western Division of the Central Conference. The team lost their first game of the season 2-0 at Nuneaton two weeks ago.

They also have another game next Tuesday at Bromsgrove Rovers.

Bulls News are looking for someone to do short reports for this site on the reserve games. Please contact us if you can help. Reports would need to reach us as soon as possible after the game.

Meanwhile the Hereford United youth team compete this season in the Football League Youth Alliance South Central Conference.

Their next game is on this coming Saturday morning against West Bromwich Albion. Home games are played at Bridge Street Park, Leominster.

Gould stays for another month

Preston North End have confirmed that they have reached agreement with Hereford United for goalkeeper Johnathan Gould to stay on loan at Edgar Street for another month.

Gould has slipped behind England Under-21 international Andy Lonergan and Gavin Ward, a summer signing from Coventry, in the North End pecking order.

The 36-year-old, who slapped in a transfer request during Preston's pre-season trip to Ibiza, has spent a successful four weeks at Edgar Street, playing in six games for Graham Turner's side.

North End have agreed to extend his loan until October 11, although the club have instant recall should anything happen to Andrew Lonergan or Gavin Ward.

Injury Crisis at Yeovil

Yeovil Town have an injury problem with at least four regular players currently sidelined.

Gavin Williams, Adam Lockwood, Scott Guyett and Colin Miles are all suffering.

Gary Johnson says he is hoping to extend the loan signing of Liam Fontaine from Fulham for another month as cover.

Rumours persist that Johnson is interested in Tony James, the Hereford United captain. Whether these rumours have intensified because of the injury problems is open to debate.

Sources close to Yeovil suggest that Johnson has been tracking James for sometime.

Ex-Bull Gavin Williams will have some of the support removed from around his broken finger on Thursday.

Harris leaves Forest Green

Tim Harris has been sacked from his job as manager at Forest Green Rovers following a meeting of directors today.

Forest Green have yet to take a point from any of their six games so far and the club decided that he had to go.

First Team Coach Alan McLoughlin has been placed in charge of the team whilst the Board of Directors consider a number of options for a permanent replacement.

Chairman Trevor Horsley said, "Tim leaves with the best wishes of the club and on behalf of all Directors would like to put on record our appreciation for his thorough enthusiastic and hard working professionalism."

Horsley recently became chairman of the club for the second time.

Shots now Joint Favourites

Aldershot have become joint favourites to win the Conference after Carlisle once again failed to pick-up three points at the weekend.

The Shots and Carlisle are 9-2 at Skybet.

Hereford United drop to third favourites with prices still around 11-2. However Sportingodds puts the Bulls at 6-1. The bookies have not increased the price as much as might be expected considering Hereford's recent form.

Accrington and Barnet are next in line both at 7-1.

Giuliano Grazioli of Barnet remains top of the goalscorers at 9-2 with Skybet, with Karl Hawley of Carlisle at 6-1.

Hereford United's Adam Stansfield who has four goals to his name so far is now at 8-1, with team-mate David Brown, three goals to date, at 10-1.

Gates down at Edgar Street

It is often difficult to draw conclusions from average attendances after only three games but, so far, there have already been a drop in the number of supporters coming through the turnstiles at Hereford United.

However overall Conference attendances have improved.

So far the average gate at Hereford is 3427, compared with 3698 last season, for the same number of games. This represents a loss of some 813 spectators, who assuming they paid about £7 for their ticket, suggests nearly £6,000 less income for the Bulls at the gate so far.

Overall Conference gates have increased partly thanks to excellent gates at Carlisle. Their average attendance to date is 5774, again after three home games.

Last weekend Conference games averaged a gate of 2094, against 1464 last season.

Time for a Rethink

Two home defeats in eight days is not the sort of form supporters of Hereford United has become accustomed to in the last two seasons. To have lost by a late goal against Stevenage was unfortunate; to have lost yesterday against Halifax with all three goals coming from defensive errors was unforgivable.

What makes yesterdays defeat worse was that the Bulls did not seem to be able to cope with Halifax's tactics.

In Bullseye Graham Turner said that it would be up to his team to breakdown teams who come to Edgar Street and defend deep and in numbers or be able to cope with the physical side of the game with the courage to keep passing the ball.

"I think we have the players to do both," he said.

Halifax decided to play with three up front and it worked.

Chris Wilder commented to the NLP: "We came here with a game plan. A lot of teams come to Hereford and sit back, but we thought we would play with three up front and go after the game, just like we have with every other game so far this season.

"And I think we got our just rewards."

Several questions need to be addressed.

Why was it left until the fifty first minute to change the Hereford formation? By this time the damage had been done. Halifax scored their three goals in the first half.

Who is responsible for team tactics these days? There seems little direction from the touchline at present.

Had anyone from Hereford watched Halifax last Tuesday, when they draw with Carlisle?

Why is Tom Smith continually being left out of the side?

Is Tony James correct choice as captain? He doesn't always appear to inspire the team.

As Graham Turner has said several times in the past, good players do not become poor players overnight. Although Mkandawire was subbed yesterday and was probably responsible for the first goal, James was clearly at fault for the third goal and was left on the pitch.

The 3-5-2 Hereford formation could not cope with the three Halifax forwards. So why weren't changes made sooner? Although bringing Green and Travis back to join James and Tretton did stop Halifax scoring, it also curtailed Hereford using the speed of the wingers.

Losing at home yesterday could mean a drop in attendance for the next home game against Scarborough on September 18th. However it is quite possible that the Bulls can go to Gravesend next Saturday and defeat the in-form side who have won their last four games.

And they say a week in politics is a long time.

Sponsor a Brick

Hereford United is giving supporters the chance to sponsor a brick of the extension to the dressing rooms according to Bullseye.

"Anyone who would like to have their name in thw walls by means of sponsoring a brick can do so at the cost of £25.00 per brick purchased.

"Your name (of your choice) will be engraved into the brick and will be on view once the dressing rooms are completed.

Defence lets Hereford Down

Hereford United put in yet another dismal home display and sank to their second consecutive home defeat of the season against Halifax Town this afternoon. The Bulls fell to a 3-2 defeat and have now only picked up three from a possible nine points at home this season. Graham Turner will have to sort out the home form if he wants his side be title contenders come next May.

Hereford made one change from the squad last Monday, Rob Purdie missed out through injury and was replaced by Mark Robinson on the subs bench. The Shaymen took a shock lead after only three minutes. A gap opened in the United defence and Lewis Kileen scored in the bottom corner when one on one with Johnathan Gould in the Hereford goal. Adam Stansfield almost replied for Hereford, but afer receiving a pass from Ryan Green he shot wide.

Dean Howell was replaced by new signing Darren Mansaram after just nine minutes due to injury. Mansaram was making his debut after joining on a one month loan, and definitely impressed. He made his presence felt and caused all sorts of problems in the defence. Martin Foster was the first of five players to be yellow carded for Halifax, all for unsporting behaviour.

As the half hour mark approached, the Bulls started to mount pressure on the away side. Andy Tretton flicked on a header for Stansfield, but it was just too high for him to reach at the far post. Danny Williams shot wide from twenty yards before Hereford netted the equaliser. Craig Stanley broke from the midfield and threaded a pass into Stansfield who shot low, under the 'keeper into the back of the net.

However, United took their foot of the gas and were made to pay seven minutes later. A corner was swung in and following a scramble in the box a pass was played across the goal face and was knocked in by Ryan Sugden. After fourty minutes Hereford found themselves in a position that they are not used to, two goals behind on their home turf. Tony James failed to clear a header and so Halifax capitalised and Mansaram found Steve Bushell in space and he knocked in the third from inside the box.

The Hereford fans were expecting their team to come out for the second half with all guns blazing, but it never really happend. Within ten minutes of the restart Graham Turner decided to switch to a 4-4-2 formation, replacing Tamika Mkandawire with Lee Mills. David Brown dropped back into the midfield. Mills had the Bulls first notable chance of the second half following a switch of play from the right to the left, and then back to Mills on the right of the box, but his effort was easily caught by Ian Dunbavin.

On the hour mark Town had a good chance but Gould made a great one handed save to deny Sugden. Graham Hyde replaced Jamie Pitman as United tried to look for an opening but it was Halifax who netted again, although it was ruled out for handball by Mansaram. Hereford pressed but couldn't create any real opportunities. Simon Travis forced a corner after man of the match Adam Stansfield had a shot blocked and David Brown got in a good header that was saved well. Lee Mills flicked on a left wing cross and the ball was headed in by Denny Ingram, but it was too little too late for Hereford as that was the last action of the game.

Another good attendance of 3,022 including 54 away fans will be very dissapointed by the performance that Hereford put in. If Hereford are to live up to their reputation of title contenders then they will have to improve significantly at home. United will be looking to put things right when they go to Gravesend next weekend, one of the three teams that are unbeaten this season.

Halifax took us by surprise

After being locked in the dressing room with Graham Turner for the best part of half an hour, Simon Travis had to face the microphone and in his interview with BBC Hereford and Worcester admitted that Halifax caught Hereford out.

"They came here and put three up front and took the game to us, and took us by surprise.

"A lot of teams come to Edgar Street and defend deep.

"We started poor but Adam got a goal and we thought that we could kick on from here, but we took our foot off the gas again.

"Then they got a second goal which deflated us, and then a third making it three one down at half-time.

"We have got to pick ourselves up from this. It's a long season, but we have to learn from our mistakes.

"They were poor goals to concede. We will look at the video on Monday and pick up on what went wrong. If we want to win this league we have got to sort it out.

Robinson likely to stay for season

Mark Robinson seems set to stay for the remainder of the season at Edgar Street.

The ex-Hartlepool defender is currently on a one month deal but Bulls News beleives this deal has been extended.

Robinson is understood to have taken a twelve month lease on a property in Hereford.

Trewick impressed with Hereford

John Trewick has been telling the Evening News just how impressed he is with Hereford United.

The new coach at Edgar Street, who took over from Richard O'Kelly, is particually set on improving young players such as Andy Williams, Tom Smith and Danny Carey-Bertram.

"We have mainly got a young side here but there is a good mix of players and they all want to succeed," said Trewick.

"The club played some excellent and attractive football last season but we have got to try and push on. Unfortunately, there will be 20-odd clubs trying to stop us."

"While there is more support around you at some of the other clubs I have worked at, I am enjoying my time at Hereford," he explained.

"There is only myself and Graham who are full-time at the club but it is a challenge to play our part in getting Hereford United back up there. There is nothing like the weekly thrill of working towards a game."

Trewick is looking to bring in fresh players to Hereford.

"Both Graham and I have a lot of contacts and there are a lot of players that we will be keeping our eye on," he said.

"But it is very important that we bring in the right sort of players - they need the right character and a will to win."

Meanwhile, according to the Western Daily Press, Mark Robinson is not listed in the likely team and substitutes for today's game with Halifax. He was also left out of the squad for the game at Northwich last Monday although he travelled with them.

McNeil may return to the Racecourse

Former Hereford United player Dixie McNeil is being linked with a takeover bid for Wrexham.

It is reported that the North Wales club's legendary goalscorer and former manager is being linked with another return to the Racecourse as the new chief executive.

McNeil, 57, would not comment yesterday to the Wrexham Evening Leader on his involvement with former chairman, Mark Guterman, who was also tight-lipped about his renewed interest in the club.

There are widespread rumours that Guterman, formerly chairman of Chester City, wants to take over Wrexham from Alex Hamilton. If that comes off, Guterman will make McNeil chief executive and there will also be new directors appointed.

McNeil was so often the toast of Wrexham fans, who idolised "Deadeye Dixie". There were a few eyebrows raised when in September 1977 Wrexham's then manager Arfon Griffiths paid £60,000 for McNeil from Hereford United. McNeil was then 30 and only a proven lower league striker. But he scored on his debut in a 2-1 win over Swindon Town and went on to become arguably Wrexham's best post-war striker.

Dixie McNeil was considered one of Hereford United's best ever attackers.

He started out with Leicester City but never played a first-team match at Filbert Street. A spell at Exeter followed, then a move to Corby Town. After transfers to Northampton and then Lincoln, McNeil signed for Hereford for £20.000 in 1974. His tally in 1975/76 was the highest in any of the Football Leagues that season, but he left the club after their relegation to Division Three in 1977 for £60,000 to Wrexham. He rejoined in 1982, but was a shadow of his former self and retired.

McNeil became Wrexham's manager in 1985, almost taking them to promotion and leading them into Europe before he resigned four years later. He was later manager of Flint Town United in the League of Wales, and has worked for BBC Wales.

During his first spell at Edgar Street he made 129 appearances for the Bulls scoring 85 goals. When he returned in 1982 he made just 12 appearances scoring three goals.

Halifax will want revenge

Graham Turner has admitted that Halifax will want revenge after being defeated 7-1 at Edgar Street last season.

"They will want some sort of revenge for that defeat. Same manager there, a few of the same players," Turner commented on BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"They've had a reasonable start, a good point against Carlisle last Tuesday.

"We know it's going to be a difficult game. We know they will come and be organised, but a lot of times the opposition shouldn't worry us too much. It's our own form and performance and if it is better than it was against Stevenage, then we are more than capable of taking points."

Halifax manager, Chris Wilder, watched Hereford United defeat Northwich last Monday.

"It is the second match in a couple of tough games," said Wilder as reported in the Halifax Evening Courier."I don't think they come much tougher than Carlisle at home followed by Hereford away. We will have to show the resolve we did on Tuesday again tomorrow.

"Don't forget that some of the football we played against Carlisle, especially in the first half, was fantastic. We probed, but didn't force it. We passed well and created chances.

"We need to keep all of that up and go into tomorrow's game full of confidence."

Meanwhile Martin Foster is expected to return to the Halifax squad for the game. He missed the Carlisle game with an infected foot. However Scott Willis may not be in the squad.

Gould uncertainty continues

The uncertainty about whether Jonathan Gould and Mark Robinson will stay at Edgar Street still continues.

Preston goalkeeper Gould arrived on a month's loan from the Lancashire club, while left-back Robinson signed a one-month contract with the Bulls.

Graham Turner told the Evening News: "We have another week to sort things out so they will be at the club at least until next week."

Letter written by UKIP man

The letter about behaviour on the Hereford United terraces published in yesterday's Hereford Times and reprinted on Bulls News is beleived to have been written by a top man in the local UK Independent Party.

Christopher Kingsley was Leominster's candidate for the UK Independence Party in the last general election.

He polled 1,590 votes. Bill Wiggin holds the seat for the Conservatives.

Purdie a doubt for Halifax

Halifax Town are the visitors to Edgar Street this Saturday, kick off 3 pm. The Shaymen will be looking to gain revenge on Hereford for doing a "double" over them last season. The Bulls battered Halifax 7-1 at Edgar Street and fought back to win 2-1 at the Shay.

Halifax Town have had a reasonable start gaining seven points from their opening games. Their recent results have been a 3-0 victory over Leigh and a good 2-2 draw with Carlisle. The manager, Chris Wilder, was pleased with the spirit of the side in the draw and was happy with the late equaliser. "People will remember that we nicked a goal late on but we deserved a point." He told BBC Radio Leeds. "If you look back at the first 20 minutes we had three of four golden chances in the six yard box".

Town captain, Steve Bushell, doesn't want a repeat performance of last season. "Hereford embarrassed us. It was one of the lowest moments of my entire career. No one likes conceding that many goals in one game." He told the Evening Courier. "But the team spirit this season is great and everyone is in it together. Last season's game is in the past and hopefully we can go there on Saturday and get a decent result."

Darren Mansaram is a new signing for the Shaymen and may well make his debut against the Bulls. The 6ft 2 striker has made 75 appearances for Russel Slade's Grimsby Town. He has signed on a one months loan deal for Halifax. Scott Willis, no 16 in the squad, will be known to Bulls fans as he spent a short spell at Edgar Street last season before being returned to Lincoln after a night out against team orders.

United only have one injury problem for the weekend. Rob Purdie is a doubt with a leg injury. Danny Carey-Bertram is avaliable if required but Graham Turner doesn't want him to rush back into action and suffer any reaction to his knee injury.

Adam Stansfield, joint top scorer for Hereford, is looking forward to the game. "If we play the same kind of football and keep the ball down and keep our pace going forward then we can enjoy it." Stansfield told BBC H&W after the Northwich win.

A Supporters coach will be leaving the Shay at 9 am. Saturday morning for what will be a tough league game for Halifax, who will be happy to come away with a point. However, the cost of the coach is £30 but at that price it is expected that not many will travel down to Hereford.

Hereford United can jump to the top of the table if results go their way.

Clubs clearing debts

Several Conference clubs are making progress to clear some or all of their debts.

Hereford United hope to settle their CVA shortly. The meeting to approve their latest offer to creditors takes place next Monday.

Carlisle United's new owner Fred Story has today paid off the the club's three major debts following the completion of his takeover at Brunton Park according to the Carlisle News and Star.

His company, Story Construction, has provided a loan totalling more than £1.3million to pay off money owed to the Bristol and West finance house, the Inland Revenue and Coors brewery.

Exeter City have cut their trading loss from £391,000 to £230,000 according to their latest accounts. Exeter City Supporters'Trust, who have not added to the overall debt, are now running the club.

However they are still suffering from the previous regime when large losses were made.

Debts soared by almost 100 per cent under former Exeter City directors Mike Lewis and John Russell, according to the club's latest accounts revealed in the Exeter Express and Echo.

Financial reports reveal that the pair racked up losses of £634,538 during their 12 months in charge - compared to the £343,368 lost in the 12 months before their arrival in May 2002.

The 15-month accounts, covering up to October 2003 to mark the point that the club entered into a Corporate Voluntary Agreement with creditors, show the Grecians shelled out a record £1,570,132 in wages and salaries - a figure not taking into account unpaid players and staff. (Hereford United would have spent about £500,000 in that period-ED)

And the club's huge wage bill coupled with increased off-field spending bumped up the overall debt - despite actual turnover rising by £228,843 from the previous year.

Lewis and Russell, who are on police bail after having been arrested as part of a fraud squad investigation, left the club last May.

What is offensive?

A letter, written by Christopher Kingsley, in today's Hereford Times gives a slightly different view about the recent alledged baiting of an opposition player for his distinctive looks.

Graham Turner is right to put the racism issue in perspective. There is no place for racism in football but it is easy to be too precious about this issue and miss the point.

A clear distinction needs to be drawn between a bit of playful banter and actios that are clearly meant to cause offence.

On the Hereford terraces I hear very few racist remarks but I regularly hear moronic chants suggesting that the referee plays with himself (or words to that effect), the lineman is blind and visiting fans should go forth and multiply.

These are far more offensive than a bit of teasing about the colour of a player's skin but people seem to accept it as inevitable. Lads (and older men) somehow think that the football ground is the place to scream the sort of obscenities (with women and children around) that would get them arrested in the High Street.

My campaign would be called Kick Off (Kick Offensive Behaviour Out Of Football) and would include all aspects of anti-social behaviour, including racism. Those who think it's funny to chant swear words or to yell obscene insults at officials or players might not think it so funny to be removed from the ground and fined on the spot. Then those are passionate about football and, in particular, about Hereford United, can join in genuine vocal support for our team

Turner praises Williams

Graham Turner has poured praise on Danny Williams after the player shrugged off a nasty head wound to play in the Northwich game last Monday.

"Danny Williams epitomises everything about what we have at this club at the moment," Turner told the Hereford Times.

"He had a very nasty blow on Saturday which resulted in him having two cuts on the side of his head from an opponent's studs. He needed four stiches in each of the cuts and two or three inches one way and it could have been really serious.

"He was shaken by it all and had to come off but by Sunday there was the determination to play at Northwich. He not only played but was outstanding when it would have been easy for him to have ducked out."

587 at Northwich

587 Hereford United fans made the trip to Northwich last Monday according to club officials at the Vics.

Bulls News had estimated that 600 had travelled.

Meanwhile Graham Turner told Northwich management after the game that the Vics could have scored four times in the early part of the game.

Hereford were sleepy he thought.

Accrington game on Sky

The away game at Accrington Stanley is to be shown on Sky TV.

To accomodate the Television coverage the game is being moved from Saturday Oct 9th to Monday October 11th with a 7.45pm start.
