Directions to Southport

Southport Football ground (Haig Avenue) is fairly easy to find. Most visiting supporters are expected to travel via the M6 leaving the motorway at Juncion 26.

From the South: Take the M6 and exit at Junction 26 signposted for the M58. Follow the M58 until Junction 3, and take the A570 past Skelmersdale. Stay on the A570 past Ormskirk (one-way), and this will take you into the Kew district of Southport. At the roundabout take the second exit, Scarisbrick New Road. The ground is situated just past the College (KGV) on the right, (Haig Avenue).

This route is said to take 2 hours 53 minutes from Hereford.

OR (because of possible delays from roadworks at the Thelwall Viaduct, between junctions 20/21, on the M6)

At Shrewsbury take the A5 to Oswestry and join the A483 to Wrexham and on towards Chester. Join the A55 eastbound just before Chester and travel onto M53 to Birkenhead. Travel through Mersey Tunnel into Liverpool and turn left A59 to Ormskirk. Turn left onto A570 for Southport. Follow directions as above.

This route is said to take 3 hours 17 minutes from Hereford.

You can travel to Southport by rail but the station is one and a half miles from the ground. There are regular trains from both Liverpool and Manchester.

Smith trained yesterday

Reliable sources close to Hereford United have confirmed to Bulls News that Tom Smith has not left Edgar Street. The youngster trained with the squad yesterday.

Various rumours about Smith have been circulated recently. Last Saturday Bulls News reported that Tom Smith was also absent. Unconfirmed rumours suggest he might have walked out.

Those rumours along with several others which Bulls News has not reported are said to be without foundation.

Smith has played for the Bulls six times this season to date.

Only four remain with Bulls

It's only 17 months since Hereford United last visited Southport but of the squad that was selected to play that day only four remain. Tony James, Jamie Pitman, and Danny Williams started and Rob Purdie was on the bench.

Of the others, Matt Baker has moved to Wrexham and after letting five goals past him last Saturday must still be wondering whether he has made the correct move. Richard Teesdale is now with Hednesford. Michael Rose moved to Yeovil and is regularily starting for the Glovers.

Ian Wright transferred to Burton but has decided to retire because of consistant injury problems. Ben Smith moved up the A49 to Shrewsbury, but he also is out at present with a shoulder problem similar to that he sustained at Hereford. Steve Guinan, now with Cheltenham, has also had injury problems since leaving Edgar Street.

John Grant left Hereford and joined Telford. Later he was, perhaps surprisingly, recruited by Shrewsbury. Karl Hawley was on loan at Hereford from Walsall at the time and is now scoring goals with Carlisle.

Of the substitutes on the day, Rob Sawyers reportedly had a bust-up at Edgar Street and eventually signed for Redditch and later moved to Stourbridge. Ken Griffiths went to Taunton. Albano Correia went back towards the South Coast and seems to have disappeared!

Finally Richard O'Kelly, yes he was on the bench that day - it just shows that the Bulls were either short of players or money to pay them - is now assistant manager at Bournemouth.

Hereford defeated Southport 2-1 on the day with goals from Danny Williams and a cracker from Albano Correia.

Brass sacked by York

Chris Brass has been sacked by York City although he may remain with the club as a player.

York were defeated by Forest Green on Saturday and are now four places off the bottom of the Conference.

Hereford United defeated York 3-0 in August and even at that time the ex-Division Three club looked to be finding life in the Conference harded than perhaps they expected.

Goalkeeping problems with Paul Crichton leaving the club after falling out with fans probably hasn't helped.

Decent value in Conference

In Saturday's Bullseye Graham Turner, the Hereford United manager, wrote about his visit to the new City of Manchester stadium last week. He was impressed with the venue but what shocked him was the admission prices.

"I picked up a book at the match, which listed all details of Premiership and Coca-Cola league grounds including admission prices. There is a considerable number whose prices topped £40 for seats in the main stand.

"For a family to attend matches on a regular basis to support their team the cost is huge. Even in the 1st and 2nd divisions of the Coca-Cola league there are a number of clubs whose prices are £20 plus.

"Perhaps it makes Conference Football look decent value."

Few will disagree with that view. To be able to watch home games at Edgar Street for little more than £6, assuming the supporter has a season ticket, is good value.

Even if one paid the full price, there can be no complaints about the entertainment value of recent games at Hereford.

Meanwhile several supporters commented on the fact the there were very few families at the LDV game last Tuesday. It was suggested that next year it might be better for the club to try and arrange a Tuesday fixture during half-term. The attendance could have been several hundred higher.

Finally on Saturday morning the Hereford United under 18 team was defeated at home 2-1 by Walsall.

Stansfield not quite fit

John Trewick revealed to Conference TV that Adam Stansfield went into yesterdays game carrying a thigh strain.

"He went into the game not quite fit. We almost brought him off at half-time.

"I had a chat with Adam to see if he could manage another ten or fifteen minutes. Un-fortunately you could see pretty early on that if we had left him on he would have suffered. What we don't want to do is have him out for two or three weeks so hopefully he hasn't done any more damage and we got him off in time."

Trewick also revealed that he was happy with the LDV draw. Hereford United are the only Conference side left in the competition.

"Fanastic draw I think. Blackpool will be a quite attractive tie. Gives us a chance to play higher league opposition."

Grazioli was offside

Both the Hereford and Barnet managers questioned the referee about his decisions after yesterday's match.

"There's not much doubt in my mind that Grazioli was offside when he scored," commented Graham Turner as quoted in the Non-League Paper.

"I was sat in the stand at the time and had a good view."

Paul Fairclough thought that Grazioli had put the ball over the line in a later incident.

"It was hardly 1966 but most people thought it was in, but those are the decisions you have to live with.

"To be fair their goalkeeper made a fanastic save just after.

"Full credit to Hereford, they forced us back and into errors before half-time and were the better team."

One person was arrested after the game for alledgedly attacking Barnet supporters.

Bulls keep Bees in touch

Hereford United earnt a credible draw with league leaders Barnet at Edgar Street this afternoon. A goal apiece in the first ten minutes saw the points shared in an entertaining game. Barnet kept their unbeaten away record in the Conference this season and Hereford have now made it eight home games without defeat.

Graham Turner kept the faith with the side that started against Doncaster Rovers in midweek, but Lee Mills was absent with a stomach bug. Danny Carey-Bertram took his place on the subs bench. Adam Stansfield was fit enough to start up front with David Brown after it was thought that he would be out following Tuesday night's match in which he limped off in.

Ian Hendon delivered the first cross of the game that Nicky Bailey headed over the bar as Barnet started the brighter. In only the fifth minute the Bees, cheered on by their following of 331 had taken the lead. A route one pass from the back found top scorer Giuliano Grazioli who out muscled Tony James and struck the ball on the bounce across Craig Mawson and into the top corner.

United needed an instant reply, and that was just what they got. Three minutes later Rob Purdie found Graham Hyde in the middle, after some good work on the left flank. Hyde lifted the ball over the defence for Brown to run onto. He beat the advancing 'keeper, who was slightly hesistant, lifted the ball over him and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net. Hereford took the initiative from then on, and went on to dominate the first half. Hyde played Stansfield through but his shot from the edge of the box was wide of the far post.

Purdie combined with Brown in a Hereford counter attack, but Purdie's shot that he had lifted Scott Tynan in the goal fell just wide of the far post. Dwaine Lee caused some problems in the Hereford box with a twenty five yard effort that was parried away by Mawson, but Tamika Mkandawire was on hand to clear. Lee was booked soon after for a late challenge. Simon Travis' long throw in created a superb opening for Stansfield. Brown helped the ball onto the far post where it fell to Stansfield, who stretched, but couldn't get enough on it and the ball went inches wide.

Bailey's twenty yard effort was caught easily by Mawson before Brown split the Bees defence with a through ball to Stansfield. The ex-Yeovil attacker couldn't get the ball from under his feet though, and when he finally got a shot away it was off target. Brown received a pass from Hyde late on in the half on the left that he took in his stride and cut inside towards goal. His effort from the edge of the box took a slight deflection and skimmed the outside of the post.

After a highly entertaining first half it was always going to be hard for the players to keep up the pace in the second ; not suprisingly he game settled down a little in the last fourty five minutes. Barnet came extremely close early in the half following a cross that was hooked in by Dean Sinclair and Grazioli met the cross with his head and beat Mawson. However, Hyde was brilliantly positioned on the goal line to volley clear. Adam Stansfield was replaced by Carey-Bertram after fifty minutes due to injury.

An awesome one handed save by Mawson kept the score level when Ben Strevens hit a cross from the right on the turn, only to see it bounce just the wrong side of the post. Craig Stanley threaded a pass through to the pacey Carey-Bertram who attempted to lift the ball over Tynan, but the 'keeper was able to catch easily. Grazioli went close again when he hit Hendon's cross with his back to goal narrowly wide. Purdie was replaced by Ryan Green with just over twenty minutes to go.

Mark Robinsons free kick was met by man of the match Hyde who was unable to keep his effort down from the edge of the penalty area. Green was at the heart of a quick Hereford attack that saw Carey-Bertram cross just too high for his strike partner Brown in the middle. Carey-Bertram forced a good save from Tynan when he hooked Mkandawire's knock down towards the top corner.

It was the young striker Carey-Bertram who created a great chance for the winner late on. He received the ball twenty yards from goal in a central position, squared the ball out to Danny Williams on the right and made his run towards goal. Williams picked him out and Carey-Bertram turned towards goal and smashed a low effort towards the near corner. He would have been celebrating too, but for a brilliant last ditch block by Ismael Yakubu. Moments later he went close yet again but this time his shot from outside the box was wide.

Hereford had the chances to win the game and probably shaded the game overall. However, Barnet always looked dangerous on the break and United had to be cautious of the Barnet threat when attacking late on. The Bulls can take plenty of positives from the performance; it was a well earned point against a team that look certain for the play offs this season.

HUFC Team: Mawson, Travis, James, Mkandawire, Robinson, Williams, Hyde, Stanley, Purdie, Brown, Stansfield. Subs: Tretton, Green, Scott, Pitman, Carey-Bertram

BFC Team: Tynan, Hendon, Yakubu, King, Clist, Bailey, Lee, Sinclair, Graham, Grazioli, Strevens. Subs: Mullard, Maddix, Batt, Roach, Hatch.

Bulls keep Bees in check

Hereford United and Barnet draw 1-1 this afternoon at Edgar Street in a highly entertaining match. Although the Bees scored after five minutes through Grazioli, David Brown equalised a few minutes later.

Interviewed on BBC Hereford amd Worcester afterwards Brown said it was a good game.

"It was a very good performance especially in the first half; we created a lot of chances and should have won the game.

"Grazioli scored after five minutes but I think he was offside. The lads in the dressing room have discussed it and we all agree that he was two yards offside. But that the way it goes and it was good to get back into the game so soon after.

"After the two cup games the lads are playing with a lot of confidence. We didn't sit back and think we are going to get beat here. And we got the equaliser a couple of minutes later. That was the best way for us to react."

Both Stansfield and Purdie were subbed in the second half. Neither looked fully fit. Carey-Bertram and Green took their places. Lee Mills was not in the squad. It is assumed he is still suffering from a bug.

Tom Smith was also absent. Unconfirmed rumours suggest he might have walked out.

Meanwhile the gate was 3645, just two less than the Aldershot match which was the highest so far this season.

Hereford to play Blackpool in LDV

Hereford United have been drawn at home against Blackpool in the quarter final of the Northern section of the LDV vans Trophy. Blackpool are currently in 21st place in League One.

The Draw is:

Northern Section

Chester v Wrexham

Hereford v Blackpool

Oldham v Hartlepool

Macclesfield v Tranmere

Southern Section

Swindon v Bristol City

Northampton v Southend

Bristol Rovers v Wycombe

Leyton Orient v Walsall

Meanwhile Blackpool's Footy-Mad site is reporting the tie as follows:

Holders Blackpool will travel to the only non-league side left in the competition, Hereford, in the area quarter finals of the LDV Vans Trophy following Saturday's draw.

The Conference side overcame 'Pool's League One rivals Doncaster in midweek, sealing a 3-1 win on penalties after it finished 1-1 following extra time.

Graham Turner's men currently sit just outside the play-off positions in the highest tier below the Football League, with 24 points from 15 games thus far.

The two teams last met in March 1992, when 'Pool won 2-0 in the old fourth division. Overall, the Seasiders have had the better, winning nine of the fourteen meetings between the sides.

Blackpool reached this stage by overcoming Huddersfield in what many deemed as the tie of the second round, eventually sealing a thrilling 6-3 win thanks to goals from Phil Doughty, Matthew Blinkhorn, Keigan Parker, Jamie Burns (2) and Danny Coid.

The quarter final tie, at United's Edgar Street home, is expected to be played on Tuesday 30th November 2004.

Stanley hopes to impress Fairclough

Craig Stanley, the Hereford United midfielder, will try to impress Paul Fairclough, the English National Game manager, this afternoon at Edgar Street after being left out of the final 16 picked for the international in Italy next Wednesday.

Both Stanley and Rob Purdie were chosen for the initial 30 strong squad, but Stanley missed out when the final selection was made.

Fairclough, who also doubles as the Barnet manager, has included two of his own squad, King and Yakabu, in the team.

It is not known whether Fairclough has seen Stanley in action this season. The selection of the players for this squad appears to be by recommendation more than being watched by the manager.

However Fairclough will be able to see how fit Rob Purdie is at present this afternoon, assuming he plays and, as there are often late withdrawals from the squad, he will get the chance to personally cast his eye over Stanley should he be looking for cover for any midfielder who may drop out.

Meanwhile Graham Turner is looking to improve home form if Hereford are to challenge for the Conference title.

"Radcliffe Borough was a typical example. 29 strikes at goal and we still only scored twice. The goals are not going in for us at the moment. I know it doesn't take very much to change that situation and things start flying in.

"So we keep that belief and the endeavour and the aim is to make Edgar Street a fortress and take maximum points each game. And if we start doing that we will be right up there," Turner told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

Lastly as a good gate is expected this afternoon for the Barnet game, the advice has to be to reach Edgar Street in reasonable time. Although Hereford now lie sixth in the Conference, the club has not announced whether entrance prices will revert to those charged at the start of the season.

Dazzo keeps title

Dazzo Williams kept his British Feather-weight title this evening at the Hereford Leisure Centre against John Simpson.

However it was very close with the referee scoring 115-114 in favour of Williams.

Dazzo, a keen Hereford United supporter, can now call the coveted Lonsdale belt his own.

"I was a bit annoyed with myself with the performance," said Williams after the fight.

Barnet team news

According to the official Barnet site, top scorer Giuliano Grazioli, rested for the midweek LDV Vans Trophy tie against former club Bristol Rovers, is available for tomorrow's Nationwide Conference visit to Hereford United as the top-of-the-table Bees look to extend a run of five successive victories.

Manager of the Month Paul Fairclough reports that Liam Hatch and Shane Gore are the only injured players in the squad. In addition to Grazioli, Fairclough rested skipper Ian Hendon, Simon King and Ben Strevens for the Bristol trip and had Scott Tynan and Ismail Yakubu on the bench as unused substitutes.

Nicky Bailey, a sub at the Memorial Ground to allow Guy Lopez a start, replaced Dwane Lee, who collected his fourth caution of the season from referee Mark Warren in the game.

Meanwhile the latest information on Hereford United doubts, Adam Stansfield and Lee Mills is that Stansfield will face a late fitness test and Mills may have recovered from his bug in time to take a part in the match.

Wright forced to retire

Sad news from Burton Albion today that Ian Wright is to retire because of injury problems.

Bulls News recently reported that former Hereford United captain had told Tony James, the present Bulls captain, that he was having problems with injuries.

Today's Derby Evening Telegraph says that Wright has had to admit defeat this week in his battle against a recurring ankle injury.

The Brewers centre-half, who has played only once this season, has announced he is to retire at the age of 32 after an operation failed to cure the problem.

The former Hereford United captain joined the Brewers in summer last year after four successful seasons with the Bulls and manager Nigel Clough had every intention of building his defence around Wright.

For a while, it looked like a wise decision, as Wright turned in some fine early displays.

But he received his first whack on the ankle in the second game of last season against Shrewsbury and, by November, was forced to have an operation.

He was back in the side by January but concedes now that he never fully recovered.

This season, he has been resting the injury in the hope that it would clear up.

"But every time I do something, the pain comes back and, in the end, my future health has to come first," said Wright.

"At the minute, I'm going to pack it in altogether.

"You never say never and maybe I'll be able to play again at a lower level sometime but it doesn't feel that way now."

The Brewers will come to an agreement with Wright about the remainder of his contract.

"It's very, very unfortunate," said Clough.

"We looked much more solid with Ian in the team and we feel very sorry for him.

"The operation took away growths on his ankle bone but they have come back and he's decided he has no choice but to call it it a day."

Focus our attention

Hereford United manager,Graham Turner, has told the Evening News that he is a little wary about tomorrow's game with Barnet, as after the last LDV match the Bulls struggled against Burton drawing 0-0.

"At the back of my mind there's just a little trace of concern because we had similar circumstances against Scunthorpe and didn't play particularly well on the Saturday.

"But the best thing that could happen to us is to have to play Barnet. That has to focus you as we are at home while they are playing so well and scoring a lot of goals.

"It was a very good performance against Doncaster on Tuesday which gives people a lot of confidence going into this game.

"We are the last Conference club in the competition which creates interest and it would be nice to have another home draw in the area quarter-finals.

"But we must now focus our attention on Barnet. If we could get a victory, it would finish off a great eight days for us. We created a stack of chances against Radcliffe in the FA Cup last weekend without finishing them all off.

"Then on Tuesday there was no shortage of volunteers to take those penalties. They were under a bit of pressure so it shows there is a fair degree of character about the side."

League leaders at Edgar Street

Barnet, currently top of the table, are the visitors to Edgar Street tomorrow afternoon when Hereford United return to league action following two cup victories. United are currently on a run of five league games without victory, but with the confidence from the two cup games they will hope to kick start their season. With the leaders in town, what better way could there possibly be than taking three points from them.

Barnet are top of the current form tables. They've taken fourteen points from the last eighteen although they were defeated in the LDV Van Trophy on Wednesday night against Bristol Rovers. Hereford, however, have only taken five points from their last six games. Conference top scorer Giuliano Grazioli has just recovered from injury and will be fit to face United. He has netted eleven times already this season, and has already missed around a month via injury.

Ian Hendon, the skipper, is one to be watched. Hendon, who plays in the back four, is a highly influential part of the Barnet side. He also chips in with the goals and has netted five already this campaign. The Bulls fans who travelled to Barnet last season will remember Hendon as he aggravated them on several occasions. He was lucky to be on the pitch much more than five minutes after a disgraceful challenge on Rob Purdie, that left Purdie on the ground for minutes. Hendon scored the equalising goal late on and ran to the away end to celebrate (and say a few words) in front of United's supporters.

Graham Turner only has doubts over Adam Stansfield and Lee Mills. Stansfield was replaced during the game in mid week with Doncaster and is reported to be out with a thigh strain. Mills has a stomach bug. Andy Tretton, who missed out against Donny, is back from a hamstring injury. However, following the performance of the two centre halves on Tuesday, Turner will have a difficult decision deciding whom to start.

The side is likely to be changed a little bit as the LDV game went on into extra time and penalties, but nobody deserves to be dropped after their performance. The regulars who were on the bench such as Jamie Pitman and Ryan Green may also find it difficult to regain their place in the starting eleven.

Turner has already said that the players have been preparing for this game in a different way; a special diet has been introduced after the Doncaster game to help them recover in time for this clash. Hereford really need a victory from this game or they risk falling fifthteen points from the leaders and they may start falling away from the play-off positions. Three much needed points could see United jump to third place though, should over results go in their favour.

Ricky predicts Bees win

Former Hereford United legend Ricky George believes that Barnet's current form is too strong for the Bulls to cope with and is predicting an away win for the Bees this Saturday.

His comments come on a betting preview for the Nationwide Conference via the broadband conferencefootball.tv website as he looks ahead at the Top 5 games this weekend for Skybet. Ricky has also selected a treble at odds of around 14/1 - so if there are any punters out there...they just might care to take a look.

George was impressed with the form of Adam Stansfield in the LDV cup-tie victory over Doncaster Rovers, but with Grazioli returning to lead the Bees strike-force he doesn't accept the fact that the bookies make Hereford 5/4 favourites to win the match. Barnet's odds of 7/4 offer much better value as far as United's match-winner in the famous cup win over Newcastle United is concerned.

Stansfield doubt for Saturday

Adam Stansfield is said to be a doubt for Saturday's match with Barnet, but Andy Tretton is likely to feature according to BBC Hereford and Worcester.

Stansfield picked up a thigh strain during Tuesday's LDV game with Doncaster and was subbed.

Meanwhile according to Confguide, the company sponsoring the Conference Cup,Carthium, has ceased trading.

It is also understood that Hornchurch Football Club is in trouble. It is reported that a company, Coldseal, in which the Urchins chairman has a large stake, has folded. A statement has been released by the club:

Statement from Hornchurch Football Club

Thursday 4th November 2004

Late last evening, the chairman Gary Calder and manager Garry Hill were informed that there would no longer be the funds available to sustain Hornchurch FC.

Players and staff were issued wage cheques on Tuesday, but these were all stopped.

Gary Calder said, "The party is over and the rollercoaster ride has come to an end. The club will continue playing football and will compete in the FA Trophy and the FA Cup. We are absolutely devastated".

Manager Garry Hill said "I feel the same as each and every person connected with this football club. I am empty inside. The league table doesn't lie, we all thought that we could take the club to the next level. After all it's November and we've only lost one league game. Everyone connected with club, the staff and players have worked hard and we need the supporters to rally round."

Coach Kevin Hales said "It's not just the players and staff, it's their families as well. It's been a really traumatic day and we need 24 hours to clear our heads. Who knows what might happen, but there might be someone who will come forward and ask to take control of the club. We will be taking advice from everybody and we will see which way the ship steers next"

At the present time, Gary Hill remains the manager of Hornchurch FC

Whilst financial trouble at any club is to be regretted, once again it looks as though this is a case of a club living beyond its means.

Let us be thankful that the vast majority of Conference clubs are prudent. After the problems at Telford recently it must have been hoped that lessons would have been learnt.

Turner supports Chelsea over drugs

Graham Turner, the Hereford United manager, has come out in full support of Chelsea's policy on drugs. He told the Hereford Times of his views.

"I fully support Chelsea's stance. In all my time in football it has been a clean sport as far as drugs are concerned. There has been the odd murmuring of performance-enhancing drugs being taken, but nothing compared with athletics for example."

He is concerned how the media builds footballers up.

"People talk about players being role models. I think that, first and foremost, role models should be parents and teachers. Some players in question are hardly out of their teens and still growing in maturity."

Meanwhile Hereford United have been provided with a Kia Sedona as part of the Nationwide Conference sponsorship package. The car was delivered to Edgar Street last Monday.

Purdie's troublesome knee

Rob Purdie has had a very "stop/start" opening to the new campaign due to injury. He was once again forced off the field in Tuesday night's clash with Doncaster Rovers due to what appeared to be a knee injury.

The problem seems to date back to the end of last season. He missed the second leg of the play off tie with Aldershot after sustaining an injury in the first game at The Rec. His pre-season was also plagued by injury. He only made a couple of appearances in friendlies. Those who were at the game, will remember his fabulous volleyed goal at Evesham but they will also remember how he pulled up as soon as he had struck the ball, holding his knee.

This, once again, seemed to be the problem on Tuesday. Purdie struck a powerful effort that took a deflection on it's way to goal, forcing the 'keeper into a diving save. However, once he had struck the ball Purdie started to limp, and then appeared to do a static stretch with his hands placed on his knee. Everytime Purdie strikes the ball with any power, it seems to cause him discomfort. He had missed the F.A. Cup game with what was apparently a groin injury, although it is unsure wether the problem was different to the one he seems to be experiencing on a regular basis.

It is unknown whether the problem is serious, but it seems to be stopping him to be performing to the best of his ability. A knee operation may be needed to correct the problem, should there be a serious once, but this could keep Purdie out of action for months. The longer he goes on playing the more likely it is that the injury could become more serious. He is an important part of Graham Turner's side, but it may be better in the long run if he was given the required time to recover fully from this.

Meanwhile, Turner has expressed his concern about tiredness creeping into his side. Despite being obviously delighted with the result, he thought that the extra time and the penalties had taken its toll on his side on Tuesday.

"The LDV game against Scunthorpe went to extra time and it went to penalties, then we found out we had a hangover from it and that lasted too long.

" What we're trying to do now is make sure that the players get the rest, the proper food and the fluids and do a good warm down and hopefully we will be ready for Barnet on Saturday." Turner said speaking after the LDV game to BBC H&W.

Barnet out of LDV

Barnet were comfortably defeated by Bristol Rovers this evening 2-0 which puts them out of the LDV.

Meanwhile Southport, whom Hereford United meet in the next round of the FA Cup, were knocked out of the Conference Cup by Barrow, scoreline 4-1.

Gloucester University helps keep players fit

Bulls News has been given an unique insight into the relationship between Hereford United Football Club and Gloucester University. The squad regularily visit the university to help with their fitness which showed through again last night in the LDV Game with Doncaster Rovers.

The University of Gloucestershire, through the Director of Sports Department,is delighted to be associated with Nationwide Conference, Hereford United Football Club.

The association has been in place for three years, with HUFC visiting the prestigious School of Sport and Leisure complex at the Oxstalls Campus in Gloucester, initially during the first few days of pre-season training.

This is followed by a repeat test just prior to the season kick off, then at regular intervals through the season thus allowing Managing Director, Graham Turner, Team Coach John Trewick and Fitness Advisor Tony Ford an overview of the individual player's progress through a specialised reporting proceedure, that is confidential between Club Management and the University's Director of Sport.

The fitness test commences with height and weight measurement, followed by the flexibility 'sit and reach'assessment. An 'Illinois Agility test' measures in seconds, over a pre-specified course, an individuals ability to change direction at speed.

Aerobic Capacity (stamina) brings into play the 'Aero Test' providing the information on the individuals ability to maintain oxygen consumption with increasing exercise intensity.

A 10 and 30 metre sprint tests the players straight line speed and acceleration.

The 'Wingate Anaerobic Power test'- a 30 second maximal sprint on a cycle ergometer- measures the individuals ability to produce power, giving the information :- Peak Power, Time to Peak, Mean Power and Rate to Fatigue.

Graham Turner and his Coaching Staff should be congratulated on taking the original initiative, now a regular and expected part of their seasons football, to introduce, in association with the University of Gloucestershire, this specialised, professional aid to their coaching and training programme.

Needless to say this University never releases any information on specific player or club achievements and performances other than, on this occasion, to give Bulls News the following statement:

The Director of Sports Department, at the University of Gloucestershire, Peter Durham, is delighted to be involved with Hereford United Football Club, through an exceptional working relationship with Graham Turner and his staff, providing a professional fitness testing programme.

We are, again on this occasion, prepared to comment that the fitness levels of Hereford United Football Club are of the highest standard their profession demands.

My team send their best wishes and great luck to Graham Turner, the Coaching Staff, the Players and Supporters of HUFC for the remainder of the 2004/2005 season.

Bulls progress after penalties, again

Hereford United are in the draw for the area quarter finals of the LDV Vans Trophy following their 3-1 penalty victory over League One outfit Doncaster Rovers. Penalties were needed in the previous round after a 1-1 draw with Scunthorpe United, but once again Hereford came out victorious.

Craig Mawson was given a chance to impress in goal, and impress he did. Ben Scott was reduced to the subs bench. Ryan Green was named on the subs bench along with Jamie Pitman and Lee Mills, all of who started the game last Saturday. Danny Williams, Graham Hyde and Rob Purdie were named in the four man midfield.

The game started lively without any real chances being created. Hereford played some neat passing football and were not troubled by Doncaster. Simon Travis' long pass found Craig Stanley on the right but his cross, destined for David Brown, was plucked out of the air well by Michael Ingham. Mark Robinson tried his luck from thirty yards before Tamika Mkandawire was called upon to clear Francis Tierny's dangerous right wing cross. Brown then hit a volley into the ground after Purdie cusioned Williams' cross for him and James Coppinger was unlucky not to have a penalty when he appeared to be tripped by Tony James.

Williams combined well with Adam Stansfield to create United's best opening of the half, his left footed drive found the foot of the post and bounced away. Brown hit the rebound against the 'keeper who was on the deck and then Purdie's effort was blocked and cleared moments before half time.

Former Hereford winger Michael McIndoe had a low shot well saved by Mawson at the start of the second period before Stansfield struck just wide after a Bulls counter attack. Mawson got lucky soon after when neither the referee of the linesman picked up on what seemed to be a clear fould on Coppinger by the debutee. He rushed off his line and took out the advancing attacker, but the again nothing was given.

Robinson had a low shot well saved by Ingham, making his debut in goal for Donny, after Graham Hyde, who had his best game for Hereford, switched play well. There was no blame attached to anyone when Adriano Rigoglioso handed Rovers the lead after fifty nine minutes. McIndoe swung a corner out to the midfielder who hammered a full volley from thirty yards that travelled like a rocket into the roof of the net. It is hard to remember a better strike at Edgar Street in recent years. The crowd off 1,375 could only admire the stunning strike.

Williams played the ball into Brown who found his strike partner Stansfield as United looked to reply. Stansfield skinned two defenders and was denied by a super finger tip save by Ingham when one on one. Coppinger hit a snap shot from the edge of the box that forced a good save from Mawson. Rob Purdie then struck a long range effort which took a deflection forcing Ingham into a great save, helping the ball around the post. Purdie pulled up with a knee injury after the shot though, but played on for a short while after.

Purdie assisted Williams in United's equalising goal. Hyde played the ball to the left where Purdie skinned Dave Mulligan and cut the ball back to just outside of the six yard box where Williams was on hand to tuck the ball into the far bottom corner. Brown came close to giving the Bulls the lead ten minutes later when he headed Stansfield's cross just wide.

Ben Jackson and Tim Ryan were introduced in place of Tierny and Nicolas Priet as Donny looked to re-take the lead. Robinson made a very important tackle to deny Priet an clear opportunity as Rovers pressed forwards. Lee Mills was then introduced for Rob Purdie, who was struggling with injury. Mills was involved instantly winning a corner after being set up by Williams and the corner found Williams who shot, but the 'keeper made a good point blank range save. It was in the second minute of injury time when Stansfield almost hit gold. Mills crossed from the right and Stansfield threw himself in the air with his back to goal and struck a stunning bicycle kick, that was inches wide.

Extra time saw a chance for either side in the first period ; Brown blazed well wide after a well worked freekick and Rigoglioso did the same after a good spell of pressure from Doncaster. Ryan Green was introduced for Stansfield towards the end of the half, the attacker picked up a minor knock. Graham Turner made his final change at half time, Hyde was replaced by Pitman.

The second half of extra time saw a number of wonderful opportunities for Doncaster to seal the tie. Coppinger crossed from the right and Chris Beardsley headed narrowley wide before McIndoe hammered a left wing cross against the frame of the goal from close range. The follow up from twenty five yards was wonderfully tipped away by Mawson. The corner was met by a Doncaster head and the effort beat the 'keeper, but man of the match Tamika Mkandawire was on the line to volley clear.

Robinson, who had one of his best games for United, was caught out moments later when he brought down an oppenent in the area. McIndoe stepped up only to see his penalty saved well low to Mawson's left. It was not the only time when Mawson denied Doncaster from the penalty spot ; the final whistle went with the score at 1-1 and a penalty shoot out was needed to decided a winner.

Brown scored first for United and McIndoe made no mistake second time round for Donny. James and Robinson had their efforts saved by Ingham and Mawson saved from Dave Morley before Nick Fenton shot wide. Travis scored and Rigoglioso was denied by his former team mate before Mills hammered high into the net to give Hereford a 3-1 win.

A very good performance by the Whites against a strong League One outfit may well give Hereford some much needed confidence. It will however, leave them with some very tired legs. The draw for the Area Quarter Final is live on Sky Sports Soccer AM on Saturday morning.

Bulls go through on penalties

Hereford United went into the draw for the next round of the Northern area LDV after defeating Doncaster Rovers on penalties this evening.

This report is from the Teamtalk Doncaster site:

Hereford earned a 3-1 penalty shoot-out victory against Doncaster in the second round of the LDV Vans Trophy.

Other than Donny midfielder Michael McIndoe's superbly-executed 20-yard volley that screwed just over the crossbar, neither side found the momentum to justify a lead at the interval.

The same cannot be said after the restart as Rovers were rewarded for a bright start with the opening goal after 59 minutes. McIndoe's corner found Adriano Rigoglioso who let fly with a stunning volley that soared into the top right-hand corner of the net.

Danny Williams equalised for the hosts after 72 minutes with a crisp finish from just insist the penalty box.

Rovers though they had won it in extra-time when Ben Jackson was fouled by Mark Robinson inside the 18-yard box. McIndoe stepped up to take the spot-kick, but Craig Mawson made a fine save to his right.

Even though Rovers goalkeeper Michael Ingham saved two penalties in the shoot-out, David Morley, Nick Fenton and Rigoglioso all missed from the spot to give Lee Mills the opportunity to convert the match-winning spot-kick

New Keeper for Donny tonight

Sunderland goalkeeper Michael Ingham has joined Doncaster on a month's loan.Ingram has played twice for Sunderland in league cup games.

The 24-year-old Northern Irishman moves to Belle Vue after falling down the pecking order at The Stadium of Light.

Black Cats boss Mick McCarthy told the club's official website: "Michael needs to be playing first-team football and hopefully this move will give him an opportunity to do just that."

Ingham is set to make his Rovers debut in tonight's LDV Vans Trophy clash at Edgar Street.

Meanwhile Hereford United coach John Trewick has told the Evening News that he thinks the Bulls can beat their opponents this evening.

"We don't know what sort of side Doncaster will bring down here. They may make four or five changes but whatever side they play, it will be competitive. We can go into the game with a relaxed attitude because we are the underdogs."

It's Donny tonight

Doncaster Rovers, currently eleventh in League One, are the visitors to Edgar Street for tonight's second round northern section LDV cup match. The game kicks off at 7.45pm.

It will be the first time ex Hereford United winger Michael McIndoe has played against the Bulls for Doncaster. McIndoe is rated one of Doncaster's best buys recently. He joined them after falling out with Yeovil, who had purchased the Scotsman from Hereford United.

Doncaster will be missing striker Leo Fortune-West, formerly with Cardiff, after he underwent knee surgery, while John Doolan begins a three-match suspension after being sent off against Peterborough last Saturday.

Midfielder Ricky Ravenhill returns from his three-match ban, but Simon Marples, Steve Foster and Mark Albrighton, who saw a specialist about a knee problem yesterday, remain on the sidelines.

Winger John Mcgrath is also available as his loan spell at Shrewsbury has ended.

Hereford United, who returned to winning ways last Saturday, are said to have no fresh injury problems, but Rob Purdie is expected to miss the game as he is still being troubled with a groin injury. Andy Tretton is also a doubt with the hamstring injury that kept him out last Saturday. However it is thought that he could be fit for Saturday's Barnet game.

Manager Graham Turner may give one or two squad players a game as he will be well aware that Saturday's home game against Conference leaders Barnet is one the Bulls need to get something from.

New goalkeeper, Craig Mawson, is expected to play some part in the match.

Meanwhile the gate tonight could be well under 2,000. With three home matches in eight days, many Bulls supporters simply can not afford to watch their club play every game. A much higher attendance is expected to see the Barnet game this weekend.

Bulls and Bees on TV

Next Saturday's game between Hereford and Barnet will be Conference Television's main match.

According to their Website, full match highlights will be available "just hours after the final whistle."

Conference TV sum the clash up as follows:

"Barnet are on fire at the moment and their six point lead in the Conference have relied on fine displays like the 4-0 win last week at home to York. Unbeaten on the road the Bees should prove formidable opponents.

"The Bulls have been distinctly average at home this season, failing to win on four occasions. They've still yet to find their form from last season. Will this be the game to change their fortunes?"

Cost of LDV Tickets

According to the Official Doncaster Rovers Website the cost of tickets for away fans for tomorrow's LDV game at Edgar Street are as follows:

Seated £11 Concession £8

Standing £8 Concession £6

It is assumed that Hereford supporters will be charged the same.
