Two from Pugh seals late draw

Hereford United got their return to League Two underway with a 2-2 draw at Christie Park against Morecambe. The Bulls took the lead mid-way through the first-half when Marc Pugh, pictured, scored an excellent individual effort but the hosts levelled soon after through former Bull Craig Stanley. The Shrimpers looked to be heading to victory after Stuart Drummond had headed them in front but Pugh’s late goal meant the points were shared in front of 2119, including around 350 visiting fans.

There were no contracted players from last season in the starting line-up although former loanees Darren Dennehy and Pugh were included. Darren Jones was preferred in defence to Keith Lowe and Richard Rose whilst Johnny Godsmark, on loan from Newcastle United, started on right-wing. The hosts started with former Conference starlet Michael Twiss up top, whilst on loan Huddersfield Town duo Ian Craney and Phil Jevons also started.

Both sides created an early opportunity with a switch of play releasing Jevons on the left-wing and he picked out Twiss with a cross to the back-post but the former Man Utd trainee could only lift a sliding volley over the bar from a yard out. At the other end, Leon Constantine picked the ball up on the half-way line and went forward, forcing a parried save from Barry Roche from 25 yards. Stanley was introduced after an injury to Fraser McLachlan, receiving a mixed ovation from the travelling support. Craney lifted a shot over the bar from 20 yards whilst soon after, the Huddersfield loanees linked up with Jevons flicking a pass from the left into the path of Craney, who took one touch before firing goal wards but Adam Bartlett made a strong save at his near-post. Craney was starting to show his class, dictating play and his excellent cross wasn’t dealt with by Dennehy and Drummond flicked goal wards from 5 yards but Bartlett somehow managed to claw the ball behind.

A nice move from right to left from United led to Pugh eventually crossing where Constantine rose but he couldn’t make a telling connection. Pugh, who was Hereford’s main threat throughout, was starting to enjoy himself as he skipped past two defenders from the left before drilling a low shot past the near post. He wouldn’t have to wait long for another chance by handing Hereford the lead, although Craney did flash a shot past the post before it came. Constantine moved in from the right and found Pugh, just inside the Morecambe half. He ran towards goal with the ball and space was created by Lee Morris, who took his defender wide with a run, allowing Pugh to smash a low 25 yard shot into the back of the net out of the reach of Roche. The home side were level soon after though after a Hereford attack broke down, Craney broke and a switch of play found Twiss who set-up Stanley for a first-time shot which beat Bartlett at his neat-post. In first-half stoppage time, Kenny Lunt found Morris, who in turn played a pass to Pugh. The former Shrewsbury Town winger got to the ball before his marker but he could only blast over from a good position.

The second-half didn’t see as many chances for either team but did create two more goals. United threatened early on when Morris set up his strike-partner Constantine, whose half-volley from outside the area was pushed behind by Roche. A searching forward pass by Stanley was tracked down by Jevons, who went close, seeing his placed effort narrowly miss the top corner. The home supporters thought they had scored when a Twiss corner was flicked goal wards by Jevons at the near-post but his effort, deceivingly, hit the side-netting. They didn’t have long to wait to be celebrating a goal for real though as Drummond made it 2-1. Mark Duffy was given too much time to cross from the right-wing and Drummond, unmarked in the area, powered a header past Bartlett.

John Trewick saw the need for a change, introducing Jamie Tolley and Matty Done in place of the ineffective Glen Southam and Godsmark. The game looked as though it was heading for a comfortable home victory, with Morecambe knocking the ball around comfortably whilst Hereford rarely threatened. A Lunt corner was headed up into the air allowing Jones the opportunity for an over-head kick but it was off-target. At the other end, failure to close-down Laurence Wilson on the left-wing saw him test Bartlett with a dipping shot, which was cleared for a corner after it wasn’t held. Sam Gwynne added some bite to the Bulls’ midfield, replacing Ryan Valentine and with just three minutes to go, United salvaged a point. Lunt played a pass to find the run of Morris, who managed to play in Done, on the over-lap on the left. His low cross was left by Constantine and Pugh popped up at the back-post to tap in in front of the away support. David Artell came on for Morecambe in stoppage-time but it was too little too late; the game was drawn.

The trip to Christie Park was always going to be a tough start to the season and many fans would have taken a point before the game. Too often, Hereford sat off the Morecambe players, giving them far too much room to find a pass. There was also a lack of understanding at times between the duo in central defence and up front, but this should come with a few more games. The main positive for United was the performance of Pugh, who excited every time he was on the ball and scored two vital goals, whilst Bartlett pulled off a number of important saves. Next up for Hereford is three home games in a row, starting with Charlton Athletic’s visit in the Carling Cup this coming Tuesday.

Hereford: Bartlett, Green, D. Jones, Dennehy, Valentine, Godsmark, Lunt, Southam, Pugh, Morris, Constantine.

Subs: Adamson, Rose, Lowe, Gwynne, C. Jones, Tolley, Done.

Morecambe: Roche, Moss, Haining, Wilson, Adams, Duffy, Drummond, McLachlan, Craney, Jevons, Twiss.

The BBC's Football League highlights programme is on BBC One tonight at 11.45pm.

The 75 minute programme will have two featured games plus the goals from the other matches. The goals will also be available on the Red Button tomorrow morning, and on both the BBC iPlayer and online on Monday.

Ex-Bull Watch

Three ex-Bulls at Northampton's game with Macclesfield, but only one started the game with Dean Beckwith debuting for the Cobblers. Steve Guinan came off the bench late but Jose Veiga stayed there. Bradley Hudson-Odoi came off the bench for Histon to score their second as they beat Mark Robinson's Gateshead 3-0. Tony James will have to wait another week for his League debut after being left on the bench for Burton as they lost at Shrewsbury.

Theo Robinson was taken off an hour into Huddersfield's 2-2 draw with Southend, while Lionel Ainsworth didn't get off the bench. In Scotland Craig Samson warmed the bench as Ayr drew with Partick, while Ryan Esson kept a clean sheet as his Inverness side beat Dunfermiline.

Results Round Up

Notts County head the early table after thrashing fancied Bradford 5-0, with Lee Hughes bagging a hat-trick. Bournemouth fired a warning that they want to be in the hunt with a 3-0 win at Bury. Shrewsbury beat Burton 3-1 to snuff out their debut celebrations, but Torquay returned to the League with a 2-0 win over Chesterfield. Aldershot beat Darlington 3-1, and Rotherham beat Accrington 1-0.

Crewe lost at home to Dagenham 2-1, and Northampton could only get a goalless draw with Macclesfield. Cheltenham beat Grimsby 2-1 thanks to a Barry Hayles goal, and Lincoln beat Barnet 1-0. Port Vale drew 1-1 with Rochdale.

In the Conference debutants AFC Wimbledon and Luton drew 1-1. Wrexham beat Eastbourne 3-0, and Kidderminster beat Hayes and Yeading 1-0.

Two Points Dropped (For Morecambe)

The Bulls will be grateful for their first point of the season, but the Lancashire Constabulary will certainly be asked to investigate how the Shrimps were denied three points in today's match.

A Marc Pugh double ensured a share of the spoils, but his last minute strike was a true snatch and grab raid after Morecambe had a number of good chances either totally wasted or foiled by Adam Bartlett to put the game beyond doubt. The 355 travelling Bulls, in a crowd of 2,119, went home happier, but disappointed at the level of performance.

Full report later.

Nine Months of Orange Bulls

Hereford United will turn out in their new orange strip when they take to the pitch at Christie Park this afternoon.

Whether orange will turn out to be a lucky colour for the Bulls remains to be seen but it's one of those colours which is distinctive to say the least. It will be easy to spot supporters, wearing the new shirt, from a distance.

On the pitch John Trewick has a fully-fit squad to choose from and whilst most positions look to have reasonable cover, the manager admits he is still looking for one or two strikers to boost the attack.

Although Trewick took charge of a couple of games at the end of last season, this will be his first full season managing. He's certainly followed the saying 'a new broom sweeps clean' with just four players remaining from last season.

How well they have gelled together will be seen this afternoon by the 300 or so supporters expected at the game.

Meanwhile for those unable to see the game 'live' BBC Hereford and Worcester will once again be covering Hereford United on their travels this season.

Keith Hall will be their man behind the microphone bringing the listener full commentary of every away game starting at Christie Park, the current home of Morecambe, this afternoon.

The commentary, only available on H&W's 94.7FM frequency around Herefordshire, will be a major part of Sport On Saturday which returns after its summer break.

Update 10pm: The Bulls did not play in their new away strip this afternoon.

Cavanagh Banned For Eight Months Over £5 Bet

Accrington captain Peter Cavanagh has been banned for eight months - and fined £3,500 - for his £5 accumulator that got him caught in the betting scandal.

With almost comedic timing, the FA announced their decision on top of their announcement in regards to Chester. Whilst Cavanagh bet repeatedly on matches using insignificant amounts, Chester have been guided by a series of incompetent chairmen that have randomly offered sums, including monies from known drug dealers, that have been used to pay wages to keep the club running.

While Cavanagh was no saint, he wasn't much of a sinner either. The others found guilty at Accrington gained roughly their winnings in the sums demanded as fines. They were also significantly more guilty on the basis on the sums involved - but that appears to be immaterial even though it is actually inconclusive whether Cavanagh actually won his accumulator or not.

Neither club nor player has stated whether they will appeal against the verdict.

Chester Match Pulled Again

Chester's trip to Grays tomorrow has been postponed by the Conference after the FA stepped in to reverse the Conference's earlier decision.

The Conference had given Chester the go ahead after telling them they would start the season with a 25 point deduction as an 'interim' decision, but the FA have refused to ratify the club's membership - leaving them unable to complete tomorrow's fixture. A brief FA statement reads:

The FA intends to review the decision of the Football Conference to allow Chester City’s membership to transfer to a new company subject to certain conditions. It is anticipated that this review will be completed as a matter of priority.

Hosts Grays will now seek compensation for lost revenue from the Conference and FA over the late postponement, coming less than 24 hours before kick-off.

Changes To Disciplinary Procedures

The FA have announced changes to disciplinary procedures for the coming season.

The changes mean that bans for yellow cards, previously implemented seven days after the last card was received, will now come into force immediately. The cut-off date for five yellow cards not earning a one match suspension has been brought forward to 31st December rather than February, which means that after the New Year only 10/15/20etc cards will bring bans.

The FA have also introduced regulations to enable them to enforce longer bans for red cards in 'exceptional cases'. These are expected to be for the 'horror' challenges that see players sustain serious injury due to challenges. The FA will also be able to charge teams with misconduct where three or more players surround the referee in a 'confrontational manner' without the referee putting the incident in their match report.

McIlroy Wants More Signings

Speaking ahead of tomorrow's match with the Bulls, Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy wants to bolster his squad further.

After agreeing a deal for former Oldham defender Will Haining late last night McIlroy wants more new faces at Christie Park, telling the Lancashire Evening Post: "It depends on a few things, but I'd still like to bring a couple of players in.

"I know who I want to sign, I've identified the targets. If I can do it I will because we haven't got the biggest squad. I'd like to think we could challenge for the play-offs but the division will be a lot harder this time. We've seen what Notts County have done with the appointment of Sven-Goran Eriksson and I expect them to spend big, while other clubs who have a far bigger budget than we have will be able to attract more players.

"But Morecambe can still be a force in this division, as we showed last season. We had a fantastic run in the last three months, losing just three times in 20 starts and that is very encouraging. We have to build on that and I think we can."

News Round Up

Morecambe have signed defender Will Haining on a two year deal. The former Oldham man played for St Mirren in the SPL for the last two seasons, making 58 appearances. Darlington have formally exited Administration, with the club signing David Dowson and Jamie Chandler on loan from Sunderland. Striker Dowson spent part of last season at Chesterfield, scoring three times in 12 games.

Notts County are claimed to be on the verge of signing Sol Campbell. The 34 year old with 73 England caps is out of contract at Portsmouth. Bradford striker Michael Boulding has also revealed that the Magpies made a move for him this summer. Chesterfield have signed Man City's young striker Donal McDermott on a three month loan. His only first team experience was a single game on loan at MK Dons in 2008.

Accrington boss John Coleman has told the press he may keep Peter Cavanagh at the club even if he is found guilty on betting charges. The player's hearing is later today, and a verdict may come quickly. Former chairman Eric Whalley said the club would sack any player found guilty, but is no longer with the club himself. Rotherham have been rebuffed over attempts to buy land in Rotherham for a new stadium with the owners not keen to sell.

Barnet have signed 19 year old full back Ryan O'Neill from West Ham on a two year deal, and have also signed former Reading youth team captain Clovis Kamdjo. Northampton have signed Stoke winger Ben Marshall on a three month loan. 18 year old Marshall joined Stoke from Crewe earlier in the summer, following their Director of Youth to the Britannia Stadium.

Accrington pair Ian Dunbavin and Robert Grant have been sentenced to 18 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, after admitting affray for their part in the Steven Gerrard case. Both have also been ordered to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work. Dubavin admitted aiming two punches at the victim, while Grant admitted punching him once in the back of the head.

Hudson-Odoi Joins Histon

Ex-Bull Bradley Hudson-Odoi has joined Histon on a six month contract, the Cambridgeshire club have announced.

The announcement on the 20 year old striker, on their official site, provides some surprising news: "The striker who last year was making headlines with Hereford United and Ghana under 20’s and but for Histon’s FA Cup win over Leeds United he was set to join Gary McAllister’s team."

By the time Histon beat Leeds, costing McAllister his job, Hudson-Odoi had made his last appearance in a Bulls shirt after a 14 game streak without a goal.

Another Ex-Bull, Simon Johnson, has agreed a three month deal with Bury. His Bulls career started under a similar short-term deal before being extended through the season. Kris Taylor has also secured a short term deal at Port Vale and will feature in their squad for tomorrow's match with Rochdale. Micky Adams told their official site:

"Kris has signed a short term deal for us. He is a naturally left-sided player, which to be honest we haven't got a great deal of. He has fitted in nicely and he deserves the deal he has got. We will take a look at each other over the coming weeks and will decide where we go from there."

Injury-free Bulls ready for Morecambe

Hereford United have a fully fit squad to choose from for tomorrow's opening League fixture of the season according to manager John Trewick.

“We are injury-free at the moment so that’s a bonus. We are all travelling up to Morecambe today to prepare for the opening game and everybody is excited about it as everyone is around the country at this time of the year," Trewick told the Worcester News.

"Morecambe finished the season well last year, they have got some good players and are established in League Two. We are expecting a tough match."

Lee Morris and Leon Constantine are expected to lead the attack for the Bulls but Trewick admits he is still looking for another striker or two.

"I would doubt whether somebody would be in before the game but it’s no secret that I am looking for a striker or two to beef up the squad. I am working to make sure we get the right people in," said Trewick.

The team are to travel up today for the game, with the team coach parked outside the Players Entrance at Edgar Street this morning.

Turner talks about Blackfriars Development

In his latest interview on the OS Hereford United chairman Graham Turner has indicated that the new Blackfriars Stand may take longer to complete than he would like.

The change of plans to take account of the fact that the stand will be all seater will result in a slight delay in getting the planning application into the Herefordshire council.

"We will know probably early next week roughly what it all will cost us," said Turner talking to the official site.

"Tomorrow there will be a soil test to make sure there is no contamination. That will add to costs if there is any contamination.

"Sometimes it's 28 days, sometimes it's 13 weeks to get planning permission.

"But we want to get it up and running as soon as possible.

"I set a target of the end of the season, that might be a naive way of looking at things. It might be naive to think we can do it in that time span but has got to be the target."

Chester Penalty Upped To 25 Points

Chester will have to win half their matches next season after their points penalty was increased to 25 by the Conference.

With 10 points already lopped off for entering Administration, they will now receive the further 15 - in line with the rules used by the Football League - for failing to agree a CVA. Based on last season's totals, where Woking were the last side relegated on 44 points, they would need the points total of a top ten finish to avoid relegation.

They are now expected to start the season against Grays on Saturday, but face a struggle with just 17 players currently available to them including several teenagers.

Update: The Conference have released a statement saying that the points deduction is only one of the terms under which Chester will operate for the coming season. They will release a full statement on the other terms when they have been finalised.

O'Leary Signs For Bradford

Ex-Bull Stephen O'Leary has signed for Bradford on a deal until January.

The 24 year old is the seventh of the fourteen released in May to find a new club. He played 17 times for the Bulls after being a late-August signing at Edgar Street after he rejected new terms with Luton.

Two more of those released hope to tie up deals before the weekend. Simon Johnson has been offered terms by Bury, while Kris Taylor remains on trial at Port Vale with the Valiants needing to offload some of the six transfer listed earlier today in order to offer him a deal.

Preview: Morecambe vs Bulls

The Bulls travel to Christie Park on Saturday for their last Football League fixture at the ground.

It will be the first of two grounds the Bulls will visit for the last time, with Chesterfield also due to move at the end of the season. On the last visit the Bulls recorded a 3-0 win with a three goal burst in the last ten minutes. The return game of that 2007/8 season saw Morecambe win 3-0 at Edgar Street with Sam Gwynne and Richard Rose the only survivors from those encounters.

Morecambe want to see off their old home in style this season, and fancy a tilt at the play-offs after a solid campaign last term. A lack of goals was their main problem and attacking midfielder Ian Craney and striker Phil Jevons should go some way to cure that problem. On Saturday they expect to be without one-time Bulls target Jim Bentley. Bentley has played over 250 games for the club since opting for the Shrimps over the Bulls in 2002.

The Bulls will hand club debuts to up to 13 players, and a League debut to keeper Adam Bartlett on Saturday. Winger Jonny Godsmark will also likely get a first taste of League football, while defender Darren Jones last played in the League, for Cheltenham, nearly six years ago. Marc Pugh scored at Christie Park, for Shrewsbury, 16 months ago and may be pushed into a striker's role if anything happens to Lee Morris or Leon Constantine on Saturday.

Morecambe vs Hereford United, Christie Park, Saturday August 8th, 3.00pm.

News Round Up

Port Vale have transfer listed six players in an effort to clear space in their budget. Midfielders Ross Davidson, Danny Edwards and Dave Howland, strikers Danny Glover and Steve Thompson, and centre-half Luke Prosser have all been put up for loan or permanent transfer. Three of them signed new deals with the club in the weeks before Micky Adams was appointed manager, with Davidson already agreeing a loan move to Stafford.

Accrington have appointed Marcelle Lazarus as co-chairman in an attempt to drive more commercial income to the club. The mother of six admits she is not a football fan, and doesn't understand the offside rule. Bradford will use the initial £650,000 to be received from the Fabian Delph transfer to shore up their finances rather than ploughing money into the playing budget.

The Mirror claims Notts County are paying Sven Goran Ericsson 'only' £250,000 a year basic wage, although bonuses will push the figure to £1million if the club are sucessful. Cambridge's re-arranged board are to meet to discuss the managerial situation once they review the financial position of the club. Northwich have had a second CVA proposal turned down by the taxman.

Tamworth have offered non-contract terms to ex-Bull Trevor Benjamin. They don't have funds in their budget to offer him a full contract. Accrington face another financial problem after the local council refused further permission to keep their temporary matchday control room. Without one they would be thrown out of the League, but an appeals process should keep them within the rules this season while they build a new one.

Crewe are giving a trial to Leicester defender Aman Verma. He joined the Foxes from Redditch last December but hasn't made a first team appearance. Carlisle have been handed a deal worth £550,000 for striker Danny Graham by a transfer tribunal. Watford will pay £200,000 up front, £150,000 on appearances, and £200,000 if they win promotion. The Hornets call it 'good value for money' despite offering just £25,000 for the player.

York have lost major sponsor Nestle. The chocolate firm will withdraw all sponsorship at the Kitkat Crescent at the end of the year that saw the firm sponsor the ground, a stand, a suite, and the mascot. Northampton have signed QPR's teenage winger Romone Rose on a one month loan deal. He made a handful of sub appearances in the Championship last term. Bournemouth are inviting offers for the naming rights to their Dean Court home.

Barnet have signed defender Ahmed Deen and goalkeeper Phil Carpenter on short term deals.

Godsmark Loan Signing Confirmed

This morning's Hereford Times has confirmed that Jonny Godsmark has moved to Edgar Street.

The 19 year old Newcastle United winger has signed a six month loan deal with the Bulls.

Meanwhile manager John Trewick is still looking for a striker. Speculation that an on-loan striker could be in the squad by the weekend is looking less likely as there is no mention of any deal in the HT.

The paper has several articles relating to the club including short profiles of all the current squad except Godsmark.

Don't Comment about the Referee

The FA has tightened up the rules about what can be said by managers about referees before the start of matches.

"Clubs are being advised that any media comments by managers, players or any other club officials relating to appointed match officials prior to a fixture will no longer be allowed – such pre-match comments will be deemed improper and dealt with accordingly.

"Post-match comments in relation to match officials and incidents are still permitted provided they are not personal in their nature, imply bias or attack the integrity of the officials in charge of the match, or in any other respect bring the game into disrepute."

The FA have also said that they will toughen up on the harassment of match officials by players.

Sponsorship by Hereford based Companies

There are not too many Hereford or Herefordshire based companies who sponsor sports club or persons.

Probably the best known was the main sponsor of Hereford United - Sun Valley until they changed their name to Cargill.

Another well known name was Hereford cider makers Bulmers who put over £1m into Leeds United but next to nothing into Hereford United. And of course there is M&M Direct based at Leominster who have been supporting the Bulls for many years.

Other well known 'Herefordshire' brands are Westons and Tyrells but neither, as yet, has put much money into sport.

However today comes news that the Spectra Group who are based at Ledbury have decided to sponsor golfer Pete James for the next five years.

James is twenty-two years old and based at Hereford’s Belmont Golf Club where he has been playing since he was twelve. He joined the professional ranks after a successful year playing on the Celtic Pro Tour which culminated in his winning the amateur Order of Merit. He is now playing on the PGA EuroPro Golf Tour.

Simon Davies, Managing Director of Spectra Group, commented on the sponsorship.

"This sponsorship is an important part of our marketing strategy to raise the visibility of the Spectra brand with new and existing customers. It will provide Pete James with the opportunity to enter a wide range of tournaments in both the UK and Europe."

So who are the Spectra Group?

The Spectra Group of companies, based in Herefordshire, provides a full range of telecommunication services and solutions to clients operating in a many different sectors including government, defence, security and aid agencies. They have established an enviable reputation for delivering a high quality, professional service often in hazardous and hostile environments.

The value of the sponsorship deal has not been made public.

News Round Up

Cambridge chairman George Rolls and his vice chairman have quit the club's board in the wake of Martin Ling's departure as manager. Ling's future is currently uncertain. Chester continue in discussions with the FA over their future. Well placed sources suggest that their opening game may be postponed with a further points penalty and financial bond both being mooted.

Sky Sports 'understand' that Rochdale have rejected a £100,000 offer for striker Adam Le Fondre. The agent friendly site does not name the club in question. Bournemouth have lost another player with teenage striker Steve Hutchins opting to join Havant instead of signing a new deal with the club. The lack of bodies at the club, and a series of players undergoing surgery, mean they will struggle to field a full 18 man squad on Saturday.

Grays signed nine players today, then lost their manager. Alan Lewer is said to have now taken over from Craig Edwards, just two days after owner Mike Woodward said Edwards was staying. Rhyl have denied they are on the verge of Administration. They have told players they will have to wait for money pending a payout from their European adventure this season.

Dagenham are bemoaning a decision to delay the tribunal over Magnus Okuonghae's move to Colchester. They say the delay is preventing them from signing a replacement. Cheltenham's aim for this season is to stay solvent, according to chairman Paul Baker. He told BBC Gloucestershire the days of the board pumping money into the club are over. Darlington have scapped a deal giving all season ticket holders free access to one of their executive lounges, calling the free offer 'corporate suicide'.

Bury have signed midfielder David Worrell on a six month loan from West Brom. The Baggies signed Worrell from the Shakers after he made just one appearance as a 16 year old.

Bulls Trialist Benedict Akwuegbu Wins Pay-Off

The former Nigerian international striker has won his battle for outstanding salary payment after taking his case to FIFA with the governing body ruling against Chinese club Beijing Hongdeng and awarding over 35,000 euros for breach of contract.

The Chinese club failed to pay his salary for three months in 2008. Following the FIFA intervention, the Club agreed to pay half the outstanding amount before July but failed to do so. Lawyers acting for Akwuegbu are now demanding full payment as a result of the default.

Akwuegbu told Goal.com: - "My lawyers are handling the case. Besides the pay-off, we are also asking for the club to pay for damages."

It is unclear at this stage if Akwuegbu is still at Edgar Street.

Another Bulls trialist, Mustapha Dumbuya, has signed a contract with Doncaster.

Meanwhile, former Bull Trent McClenahan has missed out on the Aussie squad for their friendly against The Republic of Ireland in Limerick on August 12.

Bulls 2-1 to Win at Morecambe

SkyBet is offering odds of 2-1 on Hereford United winning their opening game of the season next Saturday at Morecambe.

Morecambe 11/8 Draw 9/4 Hereford 2/1

Meanwhile the Bulls are 25-1, with SkyBet, to win League Two outright and 7-1 for promotion. (Ladbrooks are offering 33-1 to win the League)

Leon Constantine can be backed at 40-1 to be the league's top scorer, whilst Lee Morris is available at 50-1.

Lunt To Skipper Bulls

The first confirmation that Kenny Lunt will captain the side this season comes from the Hereford Times.

In their preview of tomorrow's edition, posted to their website, they name Lunt as skipper. Tomorrow's edition will carry interviews with Marc Pugh, plus a Morecambe preview with Adam Bartlett and Lunt.

Meanwhile, the paper also reports that John Trewick considers it unlikely that there will be more new faces before the weekend: "I am trying to get another striker but it's unlikely that one will come in before the weekend."

Brown takes over from Harvey

Former Hereford United striker David Brown has been put in charge at Forest Green Rovers following Jimmy Harvey's dispute with the club.

Harvey has been put on 'gardening leave' whilst both he and Forest Green consider their next moves.

Brown had recently taken on the coaching job at the New Lawn but the offer of the managers position, albeit for now on a temporary basis, most have come as somewhat as a surprise to him.

Season Preview: Part Four

Notts County - 08/09 19th, Bookies 6/1 1st - In the space of six weeks they've gone from offering Kettering winger Craig Westcarr a reduction in wages in exchange for another stab at League football to handing Sven £2million a season to smile and wave. Whether they deserve the bookies' favourites tag is debatable when they will be operating with last season's indifferent squad, though the arrivals of playmaker Ben Davies, and strikers Lee Hughes and Karl Hawley have certainly got the locals looking at the other end of the table.

Port Vale - 08/09 18th, Bookies 39/1 17th - With new boss Micky Adams' budget pretty much already spent before he arrived, he has been unable to make the signings he has wanted. Ex-Brighton pair Doug Loft and Tommy Fraser have been joined by former Morecambe regular Adam Yates. Up front they appear thin on the ground thanks to a squad that seems very overstuffed with defenders. Adams will need to offload a couple to shuffle the pack further and that is likely to mean a season of frustration - again.

Rochdale - 08/09 6th, Bookies 20/1 9th= - Even the Spotland regulars call it the Rochdale Division, such is the length of time they've been stuck in League Two. Boss Keith Hill has come as close as any to getting them into the promised land, and only minor tinkering has been done to the squad in the close season. Dale are unusual in not really having any turely outstanding performers, with even 18 goal striker Adam Le Fondre used as much as a sub as he is a starter as Hill gets the best out of his squad rather than individuals.

Rotherham - 08/09 14th, Bookies 8/1 2nd - A comfortable play-off position would have been theirs last season but for the points deduction. Another good run is expected this term, with the only spanner in the works likely to be the loss of striker Reuben Reid. Ex-Crewe man Tom Pope arrives with a £150,000 price tag to justify and the boots of a 19 goal striker to fill. He scored ten in a bit-part for Crewe last term, and could well be up to the job.

Shrewsbury - 08/09 7th, Bookies 14/1 3rd= - Often derided last season as a one man team, even their own fans were deeply concerned when Grant Holt wasn't on the team sheet. Now he's gone for good, and chief string puller Ben Davies and wideman Chris Humphrey have also departed for greener grass. New arrival Nathan Elder has ability, but he hasn't scored in 2009 and his League record of 12 goals in 66 games is nowhere near Holt's standard.

Torquay - 08/09 Conf 4th(p), Bookies 28/1 11th= - A quick return to the bright lights of League Two is likely to offer a quick return to mid table anonymity for the Gulls. One of the more exciting teams during the second half of the Conference season last term has seen the addition of Conference hot shot Scott Rendell added to the line up. But both Rendell and ex-Bull Tim Sills will have to do something neither has done and prove themselves in League football if the Gulls are to gain a quick progression up the ladder.

Another Day More Predictions

First prediction of the day comes from Square Football and they suggest Hereford United will finish in 10th place.

It was always going to be tough for Hereford United to survive in League One following promotion and, despite Graham Turner’s ability in securing decent players in the loan market, the Bulls spent the entire campaign in the drop-zone and eventually finished some 16-points shy of safety.

First team coach John Trewick has now been promoted to the top job (with Turner continuing in the role of Director of Football and Chairman) and has undertaken a major overhaul of the squad. Much could depend on the fitness of striker Leon Constantine and the ability of midfielder Kenny Lunt to raise his game to the level he is capable of. Given the increasingly importance of the loan market at this level of the game, Turner’s contacts book is also likely to get plenty of use.

The turnover of players over the summer has been pretty substantial, but Hereford should still finish closer to the top than the bottom of the table.

PREDICTION: 10th

The second prediction comes from the Guardian:

Hereford United

Manager John Trewick

One to watch Marc Pugh, 22

After 14 years Graham Turner has made way for Trewick and only four senior players remain from the team that finished bottom of League One last season. Goals were in short supply in pre-season so much depends on the strikers, Leon Constantine and Lee Morris.
