News Round Up

Shrewsbury are trialling Scottish striker Paul Emslie. The 22 year old was released by Rangers earlier in the summer but only made one sub appearance in three years as a pro, scoring twice in 26 games in two loan spells over the past two seasons. Oxford have agreed to release midfielder Adam Murray after the 28 year old failed to settle in the area.

Northampton have withdrawn the contract offer to full back Peter Gilbert after he failed to return his signed contract, with manager Ian Sampson accusing him of trying to use the club for his own gains. Evo-Stik (Unibond) Premier side Bradford Park Avenue are the latest to get a winding up order from the taxman. They will face the court on July 14th.

Carlisle are trialling forward Jake Simpson, who left Shrewsbury last summer after his father was sacked. Port Vale are trialling former Crewe midfielder Gary Roberts, whose personal problems has seen him released from Yeovil and Rotherham in the past year. Burton have confirmed the signing of former Liverpool trainee forward James Ellison on a two year deal.

Burton boss Paul Peschisolido has admitted that signing ex-Bull Richard Jackson may have been a mistake after he played just two games since signing an 18 month contract with the club. Ongoing back trouble mean he is unlikely to be fit for the start of the new season with no firm diagnosis on the problem. "Hopefully, at some stage he will still be an asset to us, but right now I have to admit that I probably shouldn’t have given him an 18-month deal."

Southend are to speak to Ipswich about Friday's planned friendly with new boss Paul Sturrock having only ten players at his disposal - and not all of them wanting to stay. If they do play, he will need to utilize the youth team at Roots Hall while he also confirmed to a press conference that he has not signed his contract with the club but should do in the next few days. He also told the press that some of the players still with the club had not been paid.

Burton have signed Rochdale defender Nathan Stanton on a two year deal. He rejected a one year offer from the Spotland outfit after four years there.

Sturrock Named Shrimpers Boss

Southend have named Paul Sturrock as their new manager, less than 24 hours after dispensing with Steve Tilson.

The 53 year old Scot has signed a three year deal with the club and will be assisted by Tommy Widdrington, the current Salisbury boss. His side was demoted from the Conference last month for their financial problems, dropping into the Southern League.

Sturrock won promotion from League Two with Swindon in the 06/07 season, but left after just over 12 months for a return to Plymouth. He left there at the end of 2009 as the club headed for relegation to League One.

Meanwhile former Shrimpers boss Steve Tilson has been made one of the favourites by bookie Victor Chandler to become the new Swansea boss after Paulo Souza left the club for Leicester. The list puts current Swans assistant boss Graeme Jones and Exeter boss Paul Tisdale as the favourites. Bulls boss Simon Davey, who came through the youth ranks of the club, is not on the list.

Bulls Shorten In Betting

The Bulls have been cut in the betting for the League Two title this season.

Victor Chandler's 60/1 is now 28/1, with 50/1 now the best available with William Hill. Cheltenham have slumped to 70/1, with William Hill rating them bottom of the table. Crisis club Southend have dropped from 14/1 to 33/1 as their squad has crumbled.

At the top of the betting Gillingham, Bradford, Rotherham, and Wycombe are all available in single digits at various bookies, while new boys Oxford and Stevenage are still attracting interest.

Southend Sack Tilson

Southend have sacked manager Steve Tilson, or at least put him 'on gardening leave'.

A club statement says a press conference will happen tomorrow to name a new manager and that Tilson, who had been in charge for nearly seven years, would see out the remaining year of his contract on gardening leave.

He has been at the club as player, coach, and manager for 18 of the last 22 years, originally taking them from the verge of relegation in 2003 to the Conference to a Championship club but, as the money run out, the club fell back down the divisions.

The club have just ten players listed on their official site, but three of those are understood to be wanting to leave. They have two winding up orders to face over the next two weeks, and have a transfer embargo due to an unpaid loan from the PFA.

The Friendly at Neath

One of the more surprising venues for a Hereford United pre-season friendly is the Gnoll, the home of Neath Rugby Club.

However since July 2008 it has also been the home of Neath Football Club.

Nevertheless it will be the first time the Bulls have played at a 'rugby stadium' in Wales in recent times although in the League games are played at both Adams Park and Edgeley Park, the homes of both the Sale Sharks and Stockport County and the Wasps and Wycombe Wanderers respectively.

The connection between Neath and Hereford United isn't immediately obvious. Whilst the Bulls have played at both Aberystwyth and Caersws pre-season, both friendlies have been after player interest.

Rhodri Giggs, brother of Ryan of Manchester United fame, used to play for Aberystwyth and had a trial with the Bulls and Graham Evans was a Caersws player before moving to Edgar Street.

But there is no such connection with Neath.

However Neath manager Andrew Dyer is UK head of Italy based Macron football kits and has business contacts in Herefordshire. The friendly was arranged after 'discussions'.

And since the friendly was confirmed, Simon Davey has been appointed Hereford United manager. Davey played junior football around Swansea and knows several of the Neath 'staff'.

The friendly is due to take place on Saturday July 31st with a 12 mid-day kick-off.

Cup Run Helped Finances But Problem Remained

We've reached the 2001/02 season in our review of Graham Turner's time with Hereford United.

In July 2001 Sky announced that they were to cover the Bulls first home match of the season against newly relegated Barnet on August 18th.

Turner brought in several new players for the new season including Mark Williams from Rotherham, Scott Voice from Bilston Town and Scott Goodwin from Hednesford.

Off the field plans for the burnt out supporters club were announced.

"We have an approved business plan to build a suite for use by sponsors and as a classroom for training by school and college footballers, as well as by the community sports officer and businesses", said Turner.

The highlight of the pre-season matches was the visit of Manchester United to Edgar Street.

"We want to give them a good game and they are likely to pose different problems to us than the ones which Conference clubs do," said Turner.

"I expect the Manchester United lads to be much sharper, more skilful and better on the ball than those we usually come up against."

The Bulls were defeated 6-0 but the Manchester side did include Phil Neville, Wes Brown, Nicky Butt, Andy Cole, Roy Keane, Dwight Yorke, Denis Irwin and Quinton Fortune.

"I can't thank him (Sir Alex) enough for the team he sent down to play us," said Turner. "It was a wonderful experience for our players to play against some of the best in the world."

The following Saturday the Bulls played an Everton XI but lost 2-1.

Two more new signings in the squad, Danny Davidson and Christian James, were confirmed.

Meanwhile a Sky interview with Turner about his shareholding in Hereford United was shown on August 16th, the day of the Barnet game.

"I wake up every morning and think it was a ridiculous thing to do," admits Turner.

"I'm a football man but circumstances meant I had to do something or the club really looked as if it was going to fold. I thought a few years later, I would be able to sell the shares but so far nobody wants them!

"The real reason I got involved was for the fans. When we dropped out of the league, I felt responsible despite not being allowed to sign players for a lot of that season.

"The fans sent a delegation around to let me know they wanted me to stay on. I doubt that happens to many managers whose team drop out of the league. It was the start of a fantastic relationship with the supporters."

The Bulls defeated the Bees 2-1, however the following Tuesday they lost 2-0 at Nuneaton. Keeper Matt Baker was red-carded. Then came a win at Staylbridge and a home draw against Southport.

Off the pitch Turner was desperate for funds.

"We are in desperate need of financial investment and a more certain future if we are to compete in an ever strenghtening Conference.

"We are in existence because a small group work tirelessly to raise funds and three employees are prepared to delay taking salaries if there is insufficient funds at the end of the month. Already many months in arrears those employees cannot go on working without pay."

He also wanted to repair part of the old Supporters Club.

"When obtaining the leases of the ground, Chelverton and Bristol Stadiums were required to lodge £100,000 to refurbish the Sportsmans Club," said Turner.

"That now is only about 20% of what is required. Nonetheless, we requested £20,000 in order to refurbish part of the club for use by sponsors on matchdays and children during the week.

"What we needed was the council's approval that the money was being used for the right purpose. But there have been so many obstacles. Chelverton are quire adamant the only delay has been the council's approval of the money being freed."

After a 4-1 defeat at Hayes on September 29th, Turner decided to stepaside as manager.

"Following a disappointing start to the season, Graham Turner has decided to relinquish all involvement in Team Matters. He has been unable to devote as much time as is necessary to the playing side of the club, and therefore feels it is inappropriate to continue.

"Coach Phil Robinson will take charge of the team for tomorrow's match against Farnborough."

In truth managing and being chairman was too much for Turner especially with the developers pushing their unwanted plans.

"The biggest problem is that I have not been too involved in the day-to-day coaching this season," he said. "I've had one or two disciplinary problems and the players probably see me as this big ogre that shouts a lot and rarely gets involved. After Saturday's performance I thought it was best if I relinquished control of the playing side.

"The truth is I've been trying to wear too many hats during what has been a crucial period for the club."

Robinson's time in charge started with two wins and two losses and then Scarborough came to Edgar Street and were tanked 6-0. It was the Bulls biggest win in the Conference to that date. However it was their only League win in a run of eight games.

A trip to Dover in the FA Cup produced a 1-0 win for the Bulls and £20,000 but the icing on the cake was the news that the next round had produced a home game against Wrexham which would be televised.

A meeting with Chelverton was arranged at which it was agreed to put the question of relocation to the supporters. It took place on November 10th. Simon Morgan from Chelverton put the case for a move from Edgar Street but when questioned couldn't come up with figures that could convince those present. When a vote was taken a mandate for Morgan's plans was rejected.

In advance of the Wrexham cup game Turner spoke to the press.

"It's a massive spectacle for the BBC," said Turner. "Fifteen cameras are being dotted around the ground, and we will be disappointed if the gate is fewer than 5,000. We are having a big sale in the club shop before the game, and we hope to see colour and reaction on the terraces."

The Bulls won with a goal from Ian Wright but the real hero was Matt Baker in goal. And so to Swindon in the second round.

"It’s not about the money," said Turner. "We’ve made £40,000 for getting to this stage and got £100,000 because the Wrexham game in the first round was on television. But this is about romance. Don’t let anyone tell you that’s gone. The FA Cup is special and always will be."

An exciting game at Swindon saw a 3-2 win for the home side. The game will be remembered by supporters for Gavin Williams's goal.

A Paul Parry corner from the left was turned away, only to find Gavin Williams thirty yards out. The Welshman controlled well before smashing a cracking right footed shot past Bart Griemink into the roof of the net. After the match, new Swindon chairman Willie Carson said it was the best goal that would be seen at the County Ground this season.

However Turner had problem getting Hereford's share of the receipts from Swindon which didn't help his finances. Neither did a gate of just 1347 for the home draw against Nuneaton on December 15th. To make matters worse the Bulls had dropped to 16th in the table.

"We have 20 weeks of the season remaining and 10 home matches remaining, so it doesn't take a genius to see that the club's financial problems will soon gather pace," said Turner. "So it's important that we improve our home form."

Off the field Council chairman Terry James said there was no support for a move away from Edgar Street for the football club. However developers Chelverton were still hoping for relocation.

"The football club finds itself stuck in the middle of warring factions and the situation has to be resolved very quickly," said Turner.

Meanwhile Swindon still hadn't paid up by New Year.

"It's common knowledge that it's been difficult to run the club financially," said Turner. "We've sought investors without too much success. All the vibes suggest that we will remain at Edgar Street. We have to obviously satisfy Chelverton's requirements and we have to redevelop Edgar Street. All those problems are at the background at the moment. We've had a little hiccup with our FA Cup money from Swindon and it's a couple of weeks late. We would welcome that money being paid on time.

"The game appears to be awash with money but you'd like to see a bit more filter down to the lower levels."

On the field the Bulls had a useful run in the FA Trophy. However having dispensed with both Chesham and then Hampton and Richmond, they were defeated at Chester on February 23rd.

On the previous Monday Sky covered the away game at Boston which turned out to be a seven goal thriller with the Bulls having gone 2-0 eventually winning 4-3. Elmes scored the winner with an excellent header.

A small part of the Meadow End roof blow off on March 9th causing the match against Dagenham to be postponed causing the Bulls £3,000.

"It could have been a serious problem in terms of injury so it was lucky it happened at 11.45 rather than 2.45," said Turner.

"From a financial point of view it was a blow because we would have had a decent crowd for the league leaders and now we have to contemplate reduced numbers for a midweek game."

Just one win in seven games meant the Bulls were still in 16th place by Mid-March.

"If the players don’t recognise the dangers, they shouldn’t be playing football," said Turner. "We’ve got to sort it out quickly."

In fact after a 4-0 hammering at Doncaster on April 6th Turner returned to help with training. The Bulls won their next two games but lost the last two of the season and finished in the familiar 17th position.

Whilst several other players had accepted new contracts Gavin Williams was stalling on his. Chester had made a bid of £15,000 for the mid-fielder.

"Gavin was offered a contract at the same time as Matt Baker, Tony James and Paul Parry, but he has not accepted," said Turner. "It's in abeyance at the moment but, as it stands, Gavin will be free to have discussions with other clubs after May 4."

Then on April 29th Turner made this statement.

"I indicated to the board last week that I intended to resign from my position and I think along with that could well be and probably will be the resignation of the company secretary Joan Fennessy. I think it's been very difficult over the last three to three and a half years keeping the club alive. It's been a terrific strain making ends meet and there comes a time when you say hang on - there's no fun in doing this. There's a lot of supporters, quite wealthy ones, who might well be interested in coming and taking on board the problems that we've got."

24 hours later another statement: "It was agreed at yesterday's board meeting that Graham Turner and Joan Fennessy should withhold their resignations pending further meetings next week."

And with player manger Phil Robinson leaving the club, Turner took charge once again.

Director George Hyde summed up the situation.

"We don't know what will happen until we have had a meeting with another party who may be able to offer something financially in the short-term and move the club forward. But we have tried our hardest to keep Graham and Joan to stay and we are hoping that something can be done to ease the financial burden. Basically, the board are praying that the deal will happen and, hopefully, we will be able to make a positive statement sometime next week. In the meantime, I would urge that the supporters will bear with us.

"I don't think it's a secret that Graham and Joan have not been paid for six months and there are not many people who can go on like that. Graham has gone far and above the call of duty and all the board members wanted Graham not to resign. He is the ideal man in the special and unique circumstances of Hereford United. Joan, for her part, has also taken a lot of flack and is a woman with an incredible knowledge of how to run the football club. The pair have struggled with no money and, considering there are debts of £1.3 million, I think the club has done exceptionally well in the circumstances."

News Round Up

Yeovil have confirmed making an offer to out of contract one trick pony Lee Trundle. Morecambe have announced the permanent signing of striker Phil Jevons after his loan at the club last season. He has signed a two year deal after scoring 19 goals for the Shrimps last term. Lincoln are set to release transfer listed midfielder Shane Clarke after he asked for a termination.

Aldershot are trialling veteran winger Scott Murray. The 36 year old plans to end his career in his native Scotland but wants one more year in the League first. Fast rising non-leaguers Truro, where ex-Bull Tom Smith still plays, have admitted breaking planning rules to meet FA deadlines on ground improvements. They have put in retrospective planning on a 400 seat stand after building it without permission to avoid relegation.

Ian Foster's Dundalk FC earned a 3-3 draw with Luxembourg side CS Grevemacher in the away leg of their Europa League qualifier. Garry Breen got a touch on a late Dundalk equaliser that was credited as an own goal to leave Foster's men only needing a lower scoring draw in their home leg to qualify. Cheltenham appear set to benefit from Steve Cotterill's appointment at Portsmouth, with the Championship club set to loan youngster Marlon Pack to the Whaddon Road outfit after he signed a new contract with the club. Pack spent time on loan last season with Dagenham and Wycombe.

Thompson Signing Subsidised

Simon Davey and Barnsley director Don Rowing have spoken to the Sheffield Star about the signing of O'Neil Thompson, with the confirmation that the Bulls are only paying part of his wages:

"O'Neil's a player I've admired for a while, that's why I brought him to Barnsley," Davey told The Star. "He can play in defence and midfield, he's going to be important player for us next season. I wanted to sign O'Neil when I was at Darlington, but I've stayed in touch with him and he was keen to join up with me again."

Tykes director Don Rowing added: "I've spoken to Simon and we agreed that O'Neil could join Hereford; they have agreed to pay some of his wages. It's a deal that suits us because O'Neil has one year left on his contract and he hasn't played much for the first team."

£20,000 for Fleetwood

Stuart Fleetwood is the first player for whom the new 'regime' at Hereford United has paid a transfer fee.

Whilst the figure is undisclosed, speculation has suggested the fee may be about £20,000.

There is also a view that may be some add-ons but this seems unlikely.

Fleetwood will have taken a pay-cut to come back to Edgar Street. But at some stage that was going to happen as his contract at Charlton was due to finish at the end of the coming season.

In truth his signing by Alan Padrew was a step too far for the striker. However back at Edgar Street it's a fair bet that he could regain the sort of form he showed against Coventry in the Carling Cup back in August 2006.

And here's a reminder of how Alan Poole of the Coventry Telegraph reported on Fleetwood's evening:

Coventry's defence......were teased, tormented and ultimately torn apart by the man who their coaches had singled out as Hereford's major (arguably their only) threat.

Stuart Fleetwood was jettisoned by Cardiff City because Dave Jones didn't think he was a Championship-class striker. But he boasts the one quality that, as Alan Hansen and co never tire of reminding us, every defender hates - pace.

In Fleetwood's case, that's pace with a capital P, searing speed from a standing start that exposed City's defence inside the first minute and had them creaking at the seams for the remaining 89.

By the time he limped off in the 73rd minute - ostensibly with a tweaked muscle, although Bulls boss Graham Turner cheekily suggested that he bowed out early to milk his standing ovation - he had scored three goals, missed two more self-created opportunities and proved that Micky Adams has more things to worry about than his under-performing attack.

Glad to be back says Fleetwood

Stuart Fleetwood has said he's glad to be back at Hereford United.

"I really enjoyed it here first time around. It wasn't my choice to leave in the first place. I was released by the previous manager.

"Happy to be back and looking forward to get going again.

"With the new manager being Welsh it's nice to have a fellow countryman here. As soon as he spoke to me -I made my mind up.

"I'm from just down the road, my girl friend is from here so it's great.

"The gaffer says he wants to play fast attacking football which will suit me down to the ground."

Full interview on Bulls Player.

O'Neil Thompson - Profile

O'Neil Thompson, born 11th August 1983, is a central defender or defensive midfielder, who was born in Kingston, Jamaica. He started his career with Boys' Town in 2003 but left the Jamaican team in 2007, to move to Norway and Notodden FK. Thompson made 59 appearences for the Norwegian outfit, scoring twice and made a strong impression in front of new Bulls' boss Simon Davey, who gave him a trial at Barnsley.

However, he only made one appearence for the Tykes and was loaned out to Burton Albion in January 2010. He made two appearences at the Pirelli Stadium. He was set to join Davey at Darlington in May 2010, but that transfer failed to go through as Davey joined United. The loan signing to Hereford had been rumoured for a couple of weeks, and was confirmed on July 2nd 2010.

Thompson is also a full international for Jamaica, having made 21 appearences, scoring once. He made his debut in 2006 against the USA; Thomspon also played in the 2009 Gold Cup.

Stuart Fleetwood - Profile

Stuart Fleetwood (pictured at ES in 2006), born 23rd April 1986 in Gloucester, is a former Wales Under 21 international striker. Fleetwood joined Cardiff City at the age of 12, making 12 first-team appearances between 2003 and 2006. After falling out of favour at Ninian Park, he was placed on the transfer list and was picked up by Graham Turner at Hereford in January 2006.

The striker made a flying start to his Hereford career, scoring four goals in five games, and featured as a sub against Halifax in the play-off final victory. The following season, Fleetwood scored United's first goal back in the Football League at Stockport and followed that up with a hattrick against Coventry City in the Carling Cup. However, he contracted a virus in October 2006, and failed to make the same impact when he returned. He was loaned out to Accrington in January 2007, before eventually being released at the end of the season.

Fleetwood joined Forest Green for the 2007/2008 season, and scored for fun in the Conference, notching up 28 goals in 41 games. The good form has seen him continually linked with league teams, and Charlton snapped him up for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2008. He failed to make any impact at the Valley though, with his one appearance coincidentally coming at Edgar Street in the Carling Cup in August 2009. Whilst with the Addicks, he was loaned out to Cheltenham, Brighton and Exeter, where he had two spells, scoring nine times in fifty-three appearences.

Fleetwood Returns to Edgar Street

Hereford United have confirmed the return of Stuart Fleetwood to Edgar Street on a two year deal. The Official Website reports that Fleetwood has signed for an undisclosed fee from Charlton Athletic.

Fleetwood joined The Bulls in 2006, from Cardiff City, and came on as a sub at the Walkers Stadium as United clinced promotion back into the Football League. The following season Fleetwood started with a bang, scoring a hattrick against Coventry City in the Carling Cup but a virus ultimately spelled the end of his career. He went on loan to Accrington where he failed to make an impression, before eventually being released.

The Newent born striker signed for Forest Green, where he finished top goalscorer in the Conference, and was snapped up by Charlton. He failed to make an impression at The Valley though, and was dished out on loan on a number of occasions to clubs such as Brighton and Exeter.

Davey Speaks On Thompson

Speaking to BBC Hereford and Worcester, Simon Davey spoke about O'Neil Thompson:

"A full international, he's played many games for Jamaica. He's a player I signed from Norway last pre-season. He came in and did very well pre-season. Unfortunately managers have different opinions and Mark (Robins) has felt that he's not probably in his plans and he's a good acquisition to the squad.

"He'll have a presence within the football club and can play centre back or central midfield. He's versatile and when you're trying to be competitive in a squad, and try to compete in the division, when you've got players of that sort of calible capable of playing many positions it can add a dimension to the group.

"I know his character, typical Jamaican - a bit laid back but he knows how I work so I know how to get the best out of him."

Davey Hopes For Thirteen Bulls By 4pm

Hereford United manager Simon Davey has said that he hopes to have thirteen players signed by 4pm this afternoon.

As reported earlier he signed O'Neil Thompson from Barnsley this morning.

"It’s a season-long loan so effectively he is a Hereford United player," Davey told the Hereford Times. "He’s got one-year left on his contract at Barnsley so he becomes our player.

"He’s a full international and he’s a player that can play in two positions. He plays in central midfield for his country and he’s also played at centre-back so he gives us an option.

"I am expecting another signing to be done by 4pm this afternoon. I inherited a squad of six and, hopefully, by the end of the today, I should have 13. We have come a long way in a short space of time. I envisage it will probably slow down but once you have your core group in, you can be a bit more selective with the players at the end of it."

News Round Up

Shrewsbury are challenging Burton and Rotherham for released Walsall midfielder Mark Bradley. Aldershot have signed veteran midfielder Jamie Vincent after Walsall released him as he wanted to be closer to his Berkshire home. Rotherham say they increased commercial revenue by 20% last season. Anwar Uddin will captain Barnet for the coming season. The ex-Bull will be the first British Asian to captain a side in the Football League.

Crawley have announced ambitious plans to win the Conference this season at a press conference. They have had six figure offers for two players turned down in addition to the near six-figure signing of Matt Tubbs, and intend to break their transfer record in the next week. They say they are debt free, and have set manager Steve Evans no fixed budget for the season only a top 5 target. Their average gate last season was 1,003.

Torquay boss Paul Buckle is 'pretty confident' he will complete a season long loan deal for Burton defender Guy Branston. Stockport, who remain without a manager, are understood to have told highly rated keeper Owain fon Williams, 23, he is free to leave due to his wage demands no longer fitting into their new budget.

A consortium of local Southend businessmen have broken cover to declare their interest in 'saving' the club. The consortium is headed by Mark Rubin, a former Southend chairman whose father owned the club for nearly 20 years until the mid 80's. Oxford's board have told their AGM that they will turn a profit for the 2009/10 season after making a significant loss in 08/09. They say they owe nothing to the taxman, and no longer have an overdraft facility or other bank loans.

Cheltenham have confirmed the signing of midfielder JJ Melligan. He exercised a clause in his contract with Ian Foster's Dundalk allowing him to leave for a Football League side. Southend chairman Ron Martin says he has had to find £3.3million to keep the club running over the last seven months, and that this season's budget is £1million less than last season with several players on £4,000 a week departing the club. He hopes to get the transfer embargo lifted before the middle of July.

Bradford have signed Cheltenham captain Shane Duff on a one year deal with an option for a second term. Aldershot have signed midfielder Luke Guttridge on a one year deal. He was released by Northampton in May. Forest Green have admitted that their campaign to raise £250,000 to cure their financial problems has fallen 'substantially short' of it's target.

Former Bull Arnie White has died

Former Hereford United player Arnie White has died at the age of 85.

White started his career with Bristol City in 1946 and later played for Millwall, Hereford United, Chippenham and Trowbridge.

Don't Forget Your Paintbrush On July 17th

Saturday July 17th has been designated as Hereford United's painting day.

The club says it has been pleased with the response from supporters to come along to Edgar Street to help sprouse up the ground.

It will be the first season for close to a decade since supporters have been asked to help with painting at the ground.

More details about the day will be announced in due course including a start time.

UPDATE: The painting day will commence at 10am.

Thompson Signs On Loan

Jamaican international O'Neill Thompson has signed for the Bulls on loan from Barnsley for the season.

The 6ft 4in central defender will form a formidable partnership with Janos Kovacs. He was due to sign for Darlington while boss Simon Davey was there, after Davey took him Barnsley last summer prior to his dismissal.

He played just twice for the Tykes, and also made two appearances for Burton on loan, but he has collected 21 international caps and played two seasons in Norwegian football.

Fleetwood's Future at Charlton in Doubt

Stuart Fleetwood's future at Charlton is in doubt. Manager Phil Parkinson wants to re-build his squad as just ten players were at training on the first day back.

Last season the former Hereford United striker went out on loan to Exeter where he made just 16 appearances for the Grecians.

The season before he spent time on loan at Cheltenham, Brighton and Exeter.

Fleetwood moved from Hereford to Forest Green Rovers after Graham Turner released him in May 2007. He had a very succesful season at the Lawn scoring 28 Conference goals and was sold to Charlton in June 2008.

However he has only featured in one game for the Addicks which was at Hereford in the Carling Cup last August. He came on as a sub in the 82nd minute.

News Round Up

Bradford have had to abandon plans to move to a new training facility at Leeds University after the university 'moved the goalposts' on the times the club could use the Weetwood pitches. Barnet have signed released Watford full back Jordan Parkes. The former Accrington loanee played for England at u18, u19, and u20.

Bury have named former Hartlepool forward Richie Barker as their new head of youth. The 35 year old finished his playing career with Rotherham last summer and spent last season as schoolboy co-ordinator with Scunthorpe. The Shakers are also targeting an increase in attendances of 500 this term. They are also trialling former winger Simon Whaley, who spent last season on loan at a trio of League Two sides from Norwich. He was signed by Bulls boss Simon Davey for Barnsley on loan in 2008.

Fixtures for the Conference were released today. Darlington will open against Newport, while Grimsby get to travel to the delightful Crawley Town. Wycombe have promised their fans they will continue to play attacking football this season. Millwall have denied making a £500,000 bid for Gillingham striker Simeon Jackson. They have confirmed previously sending a scout to check the player out.

Lincoln have handed ex-Bull Gavin McCallum the no.9 shirt for the coming season. They already have 20 players signed up for the new season, one of the few sides to be close to complete. Ex-Bull Darren Randolph has signed a three year deal with Motherwell. He joins Jennison Myrie-Williams at the SPL side.

Gillingham have announced a new shirt sponsorship deal with a vending machine company. The one year deal comes only a few days before replica shirts are due on sale, with their previous backers pulling out at the end of last season.

Ideal Location says Canham

Hereford United's new signing Sean Canham has spoken about his move to Edgar Street.

"Simon (Davey) spoke to me about a move to Hereford and league football," Canham told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"It's down from where I come as well so it's an ideal location.

"He's an ambitious manager from what he's done in the past so that really attracted me."

Meanwhile manager Davey has welcomed Canham to Hereford.

"He's a player that we believe at this level will score goals for us," said Davey.

"He's got height, he's got stature and a bit of presence and he's a natural goalscorer.

"So hopefully we can give him the opportunity to show his skills."

Gwynne on trial with Hereford

Sam Gwynne was one of the players at Hereford United's first training session at Belmont this morning according to the Hereford Times.

Gwynne was released by former manager Graham Turner at the end of last season.

The paper also said that other trialists took part in the session.

Midfielder James McQuilken spoke to the paper.

"It’s a completely fresh start - new management, new chairman and new vice-chairman," he said.

"It’s a fresh change for the club and hopefully we can push on. The lads look fresh and ready to go and we need to get as fit as we can for the season."

Meanwhile the Peterborough Telegraph has suggested that Hereford United could be interested in centre-back Exodus Geohaghon who is expected to leave Posh before the end of the week.

Geohaghon was set to sign a season-long loan at Southend today, but other clubs, said to be Stockport, Hereford, Accrington Stanley, Luton and Crewe have expressed interest in the defender.

Kiddy Wanted Canham

Kidderminster boss Steve Burr has told their official site he spent the entire pre-season trying to sign new Bulls man Sean Canham:

"I'm disappointed to have missed out on getting Sean because he is someone I have been talking to since the end of last season. He's just come back from a long holiday and we were really hopeful of agreeing something with him to sign for us, but he's had an offer put on the table from a League club and, unfortunately, the lure of the Football League is something we can't match.

"The lad obviously wants to go and play at the highest level and that is understandable - though it is disappointing he won't be joining us."

Southend Back In Court

Southend will be back in court in seven days to face the taxman again over unpaid taxes.

HMRC have placed another winding up order on the club over £200,000 owing from April and May. They will meet on July 8th. The club, again, says it will meet the debt but fans are increasingly concerned at the regular appearances.

The Shrimpers not only don't have enough players to field a starting XI, and three of their signed players have indicated a desire to leave, but they also have a transfer embargo due to an unpaid £120,000 debt to the PFA. They are also due to repay their Supporters Trust £60,000 yesterday on an interest free loan gained at the end of 2009, but the ST have expressed their disappointment that the club have refused to meet them to discuss the matter.

Meanwhile, departed defender Alan McCormack told the Southend Echo why he quit the club: "The way we have been treated in the last six months can only be summed up in one word and that's disgraceful. When you work hard all week you expect to be paid at the end of it, and there was just no communication either. We tried to keep on battling but the problems made it harder. It's a sad way to have left the club because I did have some fantastic times at Southend and it really did become my second home."

Update: The Southend Echo says that Charterhouse Commercial Finance has also issued a winding up order against the club for an, as yet, unspecified sum. That hearing is scheduled for July 14th.

Stopper Connor Signs Up

Republic Of Ireland B keeper Dan Connor has signed a two year deal at Edgar Street.

Connor, 29, played eight times for Peterboro after coming to England as a teenager, but has spent the last seven years in the League of Ireland, most recently for St Pats Athletic. He won the title there in 2007 with Drogheda and earned Eire u21 and B international recognition.

He spoke to the Official Site about the financial problems in Irish football: "Football in the Republic has been going through a well publicised off-field crisis in recent years and I've been looking to get back in to the Football League in England for a while now but the right opportunity hadn't really presented itself.

"...When my agent told me that Simon Davey was interested, I was really excited and when I met him today and heard what he had to say, that sealed it for me. His reputation precedes him and he's clearly got a well defined plan for the club and what he expects from the team. He's trying to build something quite special here and I want to be an important part of it all."

A full interview is available on the OS.

Meanwhile his St Pats manager Pete Mohan has spoken to their official site about the move: “Dan is a model pro, myself and John have really enjoyed working with him and we wish him every success with his move to Hereford”.

News Round Up

Burton have signed departed Crewe keeper Adam Legzdins on a two year deal. Accrington are giving a trial to released Coventry defender Curtis Wynter, who made two senior appearances for the club. Cheltenham are reported to have signed ex-Bristol City man Frankie Artus and released Dagenham striker Wesley Thomas, who scored three goals in two seasons with the Daggers.

The Mariners have also lost the services of assistant boss Chris Casper, who has taken up a youth coaching role with Man Utd. Barnet report that winger Albert Jarrett is to sign for Bristol City shortly, with the two clubs negotiating a fee for the out of contract player. Ex-Bull Sammy Igoe has signed for Havant and Waterlooville in Conf South. The 35 year old has signed a one year deal with a one year option.

Accrington boss John Coleman says his reputation is the best thing to attract players to the club after admitting they cannot match many Conference sides on the financial side. They are trialling released Burnley teenagers Ben Hoskin and Liam Newman, and ex-Macclesfield man Sean Hessey. Oxford have signed released Bury midfielder Richie Baker on a six month deal. The 22 year old spent four seasons with the Shakers, making 129 appearances.

Wycombe have signed midfielder Kieran Murtagh after he turned down a contract offer from Yeovil. Northampton have signed midfielder Alistair Slowe on a one year contract. The 21 year old was a trainee at Brighton before moving to Ghana for family reasons. He has since played in Ghana and Cyprus. Barnet have signed winger Rossi Jarvis has signed after being released by Luton. The former Norwich man was capped by Paul Fairclough for England C.

Canham Is Second Signing

Notts County striker Sean Canham is the Bulls second summer signing.

Like the first, he has signed a two year deal at Edgar Street. The 6ft 2in 25 year old forward has limited Football League experience, making his League debut two years ago with the Magpies after starting out as a trainee with hometown club Exeter.

He spent the end of last season on loan at Hayes and Yeading, scoring six times in 15 games for the struggling Conference side. Inbetween his stints with the Grecians and Magpies he had a prolific spell with Team Bath, scoring 41 times in one season and over 80 goals over his three years with the now defunct side.

His manager there, Andy Tillson, told Notts County Mad at the time of his signing for the Magpies: "He's a striker that's going to cause problems in the box. He can put himself around and he's got this great habit of getting on the end of things. We've worked hard on a lot of crosses into the box and he does very well at getting on the end of them - his goals prove that."
