Three Game Ban For Anthony

The FA website is reporting that Byron Anthony has been handed a three match ban by the FA for his red card on Saturday.

With the vast majority of watchers considering the dismissal harsh an appeal may have been considered, but no news of such has been forthcoming and he is expected to miss tomorrow's game with Forest Green, the trip to Mansfield, and the subsequent home match with Stockport.

News Round-Up

Grimsby have announced that striker Anthony Elding has put in a transfer request. The former Boston and Stevenage man is still reported to be a target of former mentor Graham Westley at Preston. The Mariners have also made winger Louie Soares available for a loan move. The 27 year old has made only one start this season. Former Bull Ben Smith has left AFC Sudbury by mutual consent. The midfielder is considering whether to hang up his boots after starting a teaching career.

Gateshead captain Ben Clark has been ruled out for a month after tearing a calf muscle. The 29 year old missed Saturday's loss to Woking with the problem. The Heed hope to have forward James Brown back in training after he was given the go-ahead to play for their reserves this week. Dartford have signed striker Adam Birchall from Gillingham on a months loan. The former Barnet and Dover man has made only three sub appearances since a move to the Gills last summer was wrecked by injury.

Mansfield manager Paul Cox says he has to 'wheel and deal' to get a new striker into the club. Cox's forward options are currently limited with just Matt Rhead and Jake Speight his only two striker options this past weekend. Barrow defender Sean Hessey has been handed a three match ban after being sent off following an on-pitch argument with teammate James Owen during their win at Ebbsfleet at the weekend.

Lincoln captain Gary Mills has been handed a three match ban for his red card against Tamworth at the weekend. The Imps board have warned fans that they may take legal action over postings on unofficial messageboards criticising their actions. In a statement, the board say they have taken solicitor's advice on 'actionable' content, warning that they will take action in future if individuals cannot refrain themselves.

Portsmouth's Supporters Trust is reporting that it expects Portpin to be named as the preferred bidder for the club. The Trust is reported by the local press to be seeking moves to block Portpin's bid under the 'fit and proper persons' test, and there are also rumours that Administrator Trevor Birch's conduct will also be called into question. Hyde have signed Bolton teenager Ben Dennis on youth loan. The defender made his debut as a late sub at the weekend.

Bulls Sign O'Keefe

The football website of Conference sponsors BlueSq is reporting that the Bulls have signed midfielder Josh O'Keefe.

The 6ft 3in free agent, 23, started his career with Blackburn before spells with Walsall and Lincoln, ending last season on a short term deal with Southport.

Neither the club's official website, nor any of the usual local sources, are yet to confirm the deal.

UPDATED 7pm: The official site has confirmed the signing.

"I am delighted that Josh has signed for us until Christmas time," said manager Martin Foyle.

"He's a 6'2" midfielder with an eye for goal that will add competition for players in the middle of the park."

O'Keefe later tweeted:

'Really happy to have signed for Hereford United today! Looking forward to the game tomorrow!'

Best Home Start In Nine Years

With Saturday's win over Cambridge, the Bulls have recorded their best start to the season at Edgar Street in nine years.

Only the goal-feast that was the 2003/4 season surpasses the four wins out of five that the Bulls have recorded so far this term on home soil. It was probably the biggest wish of Bulls fans' over the summer to have a side that was capable of winning home matches, something that has been happily supplied by Martin Foyle.

Last season it was March when the Bulls recorded their fourth home league win, while the season before there was barely a cheer at home before Christmas with January bringing the first home victory.

Merton Meadow Car Park Flooded

The Merton Meadow car park which adjoins Hereford United's football ground is currently (10am) partly closed because of flooding. (Hereford Council are reporting 80% closed)

Heavy overnight rain in the area has also affected several roads in the area.

The Met Office has reported that Hereford was the wettest place in the UK in the last 24 hours with 64.6 mms (2.5in) of rainfall.

A flood prevention scheme costing £4.5M was recently completed with one of its aims to prevent flooding of the Merton Meadow car park. Hereford Futures says it is investigating why the car park has flooded, believing a blockage east of Edgar Street is to blame.

Elsewhere in the city, the Leisure Centre is closed until at least 4pm due to flooding with a decision to be made later whether to keep it closed further.

Some good news - the River Wye isn't expected to cause any flooding in Herefordshire in the next 24 hours.  Despite the high rainfall totals, the Wye is well within its banks throughout the county.

First Aid Course with the HFA

Herefordshire FA have arranged a 'first aid course for anyone with an interest in football.

The importance of having someone at games with first aid experience can make all the difference when a player is injuried or taken ill.

Recently a 26 year old player collapsed during a game in Gloucestershire and was only saved by an off duty paramedic who happened to have a deflibilator in his car.

Statistics suggest that only 5% of adults have any formal first aid training.

Would you know what to do if a family member, friend or person in front of you collapsed?  Could you save their life?

The course, which is entitled 'Basic First Aid For Sport' and runs over three consecutive Thursday evenings, starts on November 8th at 6.30pm at the HFA's Ted Powell Building just off Widemarsh Common.

More details on the HFA website or contact Jess Aspey on 01432 342179

Two Matches In Hereford On Tuesday Evening

Forest Green Rovers are the visitors to Edgar Street on Tuesday evening for what should be an entertaining Conference game between two old rivals.

However there will be another important match taking place in Hereford that evening.

Yesterday Westfields draw 1-1 in the FA Cup second qualifying round at Solihull Moors. So the replay will take place at the allpay.park on Tuesday.

Whilst it would be ideal if Westfields could have moved their game to Wednesday, that looks out of the question without special dispensation from the FA.

As it is, both clubs are likely to be missing a few potential supporters.

News Round-Up

Wycombe sacked manager Gary Waddock following their 1-0 home loss to fellow League Two strugglers Wimbledon this afternoon. It was the Chairboys' third straight loss, leaving them only goal difference above the drop zone. Southport fans have raised all but £100 of the funds needed to keep coach Kevin Lee at the club for the season. Lee retired from playing in the summer, with fans pledging to fund his £100 a week wages through the current season.

Truro City boss Lee Hodges says his management team and playing staff will only stay with the club for two more matches unless a buyer is found. Players have been unable to pay for fuel to attend training sessions, leading the Conf South side to miss out on £4,500 of prize money today in losing at home to Totton in the FA Cup. Coventry hope to have solved their rent problems at the Ricoh Arena after club owners SISU agreed to take a 50% stake in the stadium. They currently pay £1.3million in rent.

CONFIDENCE RESTORED

After the debacles of the last two Saturdays, Hereford gained a welcome three points in a topsy-turvy encounter with Cambridge this afternoon. Twice behind, missing a penalty and being reduced to ten men could not prevent the Bulls from gaining a victory, courtesy of a three goal salvo in a manic five minute period early in the second half. This statistic alone must come as a surprise for those that endured the Dartford game; perhaps there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Harry Pell created the first chance for the Bulls with a useful pass to Ryan Bowman which needed a smart response from Jonathan Hedge, between the sticks for the visitors. Marley Watkins and Pell showed some good understanding, and so did Sam Clucas and Bowman as Hereford probed for an opening. Watkins in particular showed awareness in picking out a colleague, though he once played an over-ambitious ball for Marlon Jackson when Clucas was better placed. Hereford had dominated possession for the first 14 minutes, but the self-destruct button was then pressed. Under very little pressure Stefan Stam took his eye off the ball for a split-second and allowed it to roll under his boot. Grateful recipient was Michael Gash who had no difficulty in firing past James Bittner in the home goal to give the Us a shock lead.

Hereford set about rectifying the situation. Andy Gallinah found Jackson with a cross, and the header was pushed over. Ashley Sammons latched onto a clearance and had his shot blocked, and then Bowman robbed Josh Coulson and had only Hedge to beat. The keeper took some pace off the shot and a retreating defender had to hoof the ball to safety.

Meanwhile, at the other end, a flowing move involving Rickey Wellard, Tom Shaw and finally Liam Hughes saw a dangerous cross cut out by Gallinah. On 35 minutes, Watkins cleverly won the ball, bamboozled two opponents, and played a delightful pass for Bowman to muscle onto. The striker showed skill and determination in slotting the ball home from just inside the area to give Hereford a deserved equaliser.

Injury time at the end of the half gave an excellent chance for the home side to take a lead. The speedy Jackson was tripped by Coulson as he burst into the box, and there were few complaints about the penalty award. Jackson dusted himself down to take the kick himself, but the effort lacked both pace and direction and Hedge made a comfortable save. There was barely time to restart proceedings as the teams headed for their half-time oranges.

HT: HUFC 1 CAMBRIDGE UTD. 1

Few could have predicted events of the first eight minutes of the second period. Here is a synopsis.
47 mins; just like last week, a goal was conceded by the slow starting Bulls. Jonathon Thorpe passed to Hughes who delivered a great cross to the far stick where Gash was waiting to nod home and double his tally. 1-2
48 mins; this time it was Cambridge who fail to clear after a promising Bulls move, and the loose ball ran kindly for Clucas to lash home from 20 yards. 2-2
Sam Clucas celebrating his second goal of the season
51 mins; Gallinah had made a couple of telling interceptions and one of these found Watkins breaking free down the right. It appeared that the cross was too far behind Jackson, but the youngster somehow managed to send a looping header beyond Hedge’s fingertips. 3-2
53 mins; Hughes and Thorpe had once more looked like carving another opening, before Pell collected and headed goalwards. An inch perfect pass found Jackson who showed great composure in checking inside before steering home yet another goal for the Bulls. 4-2

Marlon Jackson with Harry Pell
After this goal-fest, things settled down. Gash had a chance to complete his hat-trick but his glancing header was well saved by Bittner. Similarly, Jackson almost completed his own treble as he came close to latching on to a weak back-pass from Rory McAuley. Both sides created further chances in an entertaining affair, and a flurry of substitutions gave fresh impetus to the game. The only sour note came as Byron Anthony clattered into Hughes. A determined and strong challenge, certainly, a free kick, possibly, but the flourishing of a red card seemed to most observers to be unnecessarily harsh. Exit a distraught, and disbelieving Mr Anthony to sympathetic applause. The Bulls faithful can look forward to the visit of the mighty FGR with new confidence.

FT: HUFC 4 CAMBRIDGE UTD. 2
Attendance: 1677, with 158 away “punters”.

HUFC: Bittner, Gallinah, Graham, Stam, Anthony, Pell, Watkins (Heath 79), Clucas, Sammons (Evans 70), Jackson (Canham 73), Bowman.
CAMB.UTD.: Hedge, Coulson, Wellard (Eades 70), McAuley, Thorpe, Andrew, Shaw (Marriott 81), Berry, Gash, Pugh (Thallassitis 64), Hughes.

We Let Them Back In - George

Jez George gave his reaction to this afternoon's match at Edgar Street where Hereford defeated Cambridge 4-2 in a game littered with defensive errors.

"We've come here today, took the lead twice against a team that's struggling as you can see from their last two games in terms of keeping clean sheets and stopping goals going in.," said the Cambridge United manager.

"We didn't take the initative after the first goal and we let them back in.

"We scored a good goal at the start of the second half, but it was our frailities again because they've done nothing to score their goals."

Bowman pleased with his goal

Striker Ryan Bowman scored Hereford's first goal this afternoon and after the game he spoke to BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"I'd missed a chance just before and I was a bit upset with myself so I was just hoping to get another chance as soon as possible," said Bowman

"So when I saw Marley open up I just made a run and thankfully he found me and I put it into the back of the net."

Just after half time Cambridge went 2-1 ahead.

"The last two games, especially Dartford when they scored just after half time, all of our heads dropped.

"Today having scored a goal already I thought we definitely should get back into it.

"And once we got the second goal I thought we were going to win the game."

Sam Clucas scored the second Hereford goal.

"He scored with his weaker foot. It was a good volley. He took it well."

Marlon Jackson added two more in the space of two minutes after missing a penalty in the first half.

"He came in at half time, he was disappointed. Everyone told him he'd get another chance.

"But in the first ten minutes he got his two goals."

Ex-Bull Watch

In League One, Yoann Arquin scored twice as Notts County beat Portsmouth. James Baxendale scored for Walsall as they beat Preston.

In the Conference, Nathan Elder scored for Ebbsfleet as they lost to Barrow. Gavin McCallum scored the winner as Woking beat Gateshead.

In the Welsh Premier, Kenny Lunt scored a rare goal as Bala Town beat Carmarthen. Jason Price scored again as Prestatyn drew with Port Talbot.

In the Scottish Premier, Gary Hooper scored for Celtic as they beat Dundee.

The Battle of the Defences

Given that Cambridge had conceeded seven and Hereford nine goals in their last two games, Martin Foyle felt it was the 'battle of the defences today'.

"They were probably worse than we were," Foyle told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"It's a nervy time and I don't know why because we've been very good at home.

"But their first goal was a mistake and then everybody's heads dropped

"But credit to the players they fought back into the game and it was a good goal. Marley came inside and Ryan got around the keeper.

"And then the penalty before half-time. You just knew it wasn't going to go in.

"But give credit to the lads second half, they've come out and dug in again."

Cambridge went ahead in the 47th minute but then three Hereford goals in five minutes.

"It was important that we got an early reply, Sam Clucas with a magnificent finish with his weaker foot."

And then two goals from Marlon Jackson.

"He's been chomping at the bit, he's been in the background for a while.

"I'm going home happy with three points but there's loads of work to do."

Foyle the spoke about striker Ryan Bowman.

"Ryan is going to be one of those unsung heroes.

"He holds the ball up well, he brings his chest into the game, he heads the ball well. He's got a lot of attributes.

"There's not many flaws in his game other than he's young and has got to learn the game."

Bryon Anthony about to be red carded after a challenge on Liam Hughes
Finally the sending off of Bryon Anthony.

"The old  Arsène Wenger one - I didn't see it as the dug-out cuts out.

"Some of the boys said he got the ball, and one or two said he actually got off the ground.

"It's a costly one as we've only got five defenders as it is. So help!"

Results Round-Up

The Bulls are up to tenth after today's results, just a point short of the play-offs. Newport lead the table by a point after a late comeback sealed a 2-1 win over Southport, with Forest Green taking second after beating Macclesfield 2-1 at a quiet Moss Rose. Wrexham also move above the Silkmen after a 2-2 home draw with Dartford. Grimsby are into the play-offs after a 4-1 win over Luton last night.

Down the bottom, it's still Kidderminster propping up the table as they now go 10 games without a win. Their 1-1 draw with Alfreton sees them five points short of safety. Hyde are next after a 2-2 draw with Nuneaton, with Ebbsfleet dropping down following a 4-2 home loss to Barrow.  Lincoln are in the bottom four after losing 1-0 at Tamworth, but Stockport escape a similar fate after drawing 0-0 at Braintree. In the other game, Woking beat Gateshead 2-1 to keep both sides in mid-table.

Bulls Net Four In Return To Form

The Bulls beat Cambridge 4-2 in today's Conference match at Edgar Street.

Kevin Sheedy Given All-Clear

Bulls legend Kevin Sheedy has been given the all-clear after surgery and subsequent tests showed he had beaten bowel cancer.

Everton issued a statement on behalf of their Academy coach exactly a month ago confirming the original diagnosis, ahead of surgery and recovery. He text Gareth Davies this morning to announce the good news, with Gareth relaying the news on Twitter:

Had txt off Kevin Sheedy this morning. Had all clear after operation and tests.

That's a great start to the day!

Pitman Back At Swindon

Former Hereford United manager Jamie Pitman is back at Swindon where he started his football career in 1995.

He's joined the Robins to help with their Elite Player Performance Programme.

Last season Pitman was in the opposing dug-out to Paolo Di Canio, the Swindon manager but was sacked by Hereford last March after a string of poor results.

"Football is a notoriously difficult job," Pitman told the Swindon Advertiser.

"It was a tough job at Hereford but a great learning curve and something I'm glad I did and it was a great experience.

"But I've got to change and adapt to the youth system and youth football."

Pitman went on to explain how being a manager should help in his new job.

"Having had the insight as a manager you certainly get to see what comes to you.

"What I'm going to be trying to do is change behaviours and things like that."

Full Conference Programme Starts Tonight

This weekend's Conference programme starts tonight with Luton's trip to Grimsby, live on Premier Sports.

The fifth placed Hatters can go temporarily top of the table with a win at the Mariners, who themselves can knock Paul Buckle's men out of the play-off spots with a win.

Tomorrow sees the other 11 ties of the weekend kick off at 3.00pm. Current leaders Newport entertain Southport, while second takes on third at Moss Rose as Macclesfield take on Forest Green.

Down the bottom, Kidderminster continue their search for an opening win with a trip to Alfreton, while Stockport can drop into the bottom four if they lose to Braintree and Nuneaton beat fellow strugglers Barrow.

Follow the Bulls Tomorrow

As ever if you can't get to Edgar Street tomorrow to watch the Bulls, there are several ways to keep up with their progress in the game against Cambridge United.

BBC Hereford and Worcester will have a preview, full match coverage and the best interviews after the game on 94.7FM around Herefordshire and also on-line.

Trevor Owens will describe the action aided by former Hereford United player Gareth Davies.

The subscription based Bulls Player will also have full coverage of the match.

News Round-Up

Stockport have signed former midfielder Paul Turnbull from Northampton on a three month loan deal. The 23 year old signed for the Cobblers from the Hatters for an undisclosed fee in the summer of 2011 but has failed to establish himself under their procession of managers. Former Bulls defender Martyn Giles has been recalled from his loan at Bridgend due to an injury crisis at parent club Llanelli. Manager Andy Legg, 46, is one of 16 players available to play in their game tonight.

Mansfield boss Paul Cox is bemoaning an injury crisis at the club that has left him with 'only' 20 fit players. He is mulling over offering terms to three unnamed trialists that have been trying to impress over the past week. Macclesfield's ambitious attempt to sign Emile Heskey has failed after the veteran striker signed for Australian side Newcastle Jets.

Telford are set to allow striker Joe Yoffe to leave after an unnamed Conf North side put in 7 days notice on the non-contract player. The 25 year old is yet to play for the Bucks after arriving in the summer. Truro City boss Lee Hodges says that there have been no solid enquiries to take over the club. Hodges told the BBC there had been several phone calls but not one had been followed up.

Foyle: Youngsters Need To Learn, Seniors Need To Lead

Bulls boss Martin Foyle has urged his players to return to playing as a team after the disaster at Dartford.

He told the Worcester News: “Maybe it was a bit of false hope starting the way we did, building ourselves up to be better than we were, but we have been brought down to earth with a big bang. If you look at the DVD of the Dartford game, players were way out of position when we didn’t have the ball so there was a lot wrong and we haven’t done that in previous games.

“We have to get those two games out of our system in terms of being brave and wanting to get on the ball. I can’t fault the players’ attitudes but the young ones have to learn very quickly and I want a bit more from my seniors in terms of organisation and pulling the younger ones round.
“The youngsters can’t play free and easy, it’s a team game and we have got to get back to being a team. The standards haven’t been good enough."

George Likely To Go Same Again

Cambridge manager Jez George will have several selection headaches ahead of their trip to Edgar Street tomorrow.

Star striker Tom Elliott, who started the season with five goals in four games, is expected to miss out after injury ruled him out of last week's draw with Telford. The former Leeds trainee is back in training but George is unlikely to risk him after signing teenager Michael Thalassitis on loan in the week, while fellow forward Sam Smith is ruled out with concussion.

George will have teenage defender Jonathon Thorpe back in contention after he made a largely successful return from knee surgery in last week's game, only to come off with 10 minutes left after landing awkwardly. Thorpe missed training early in the week but is considered fit enough to feature. However fellow defenders Scott Garner, who has a knee problem, and Blaine Hudson, who need surgery on his groin, will continue to miss out.

Former Barnet and Luton winger Rossi Jarvis is expected to feature at least from the bench after missing the last game with a dead leg, and fellow midfielder Billy Gibson has a groin injury that will rule him out, while there is little word on the three players widely believed to have been suspended by the club.

George has, so far, refused to speak on rumours about defender James Jennings, and midfielders Robbie Willmott and Adriano Moke, allegedly barring them from first team activities prior to last week's game. The local press report that George is likely to select the same starting XI, leaving the trio still out in the cold.

Preview: Bulls vs Cambridge

The Bulls entertain Cambridge United on Saturday in a vital Conference match at Edgar Street.

It is more than six and a half years since the U's visited Edgar Street, leaving with a 3-0 beating thanks to Adam Stansfield and an Andy Williams double. It followed up the only other Conference clash between the sides, when the U's won in front of the TV cameras 2-1 at the Abbey Stadium with Guy Ipoua scoring the Bulls goal. Overall, honors are fairly even between the sides with the U's having won one more match with just four draws in 25 encounters since 1972.

The Bulls have lost the services of both Tristam Plummer and Tom Nichols over the past week after a pair of disappointing performances on the road. Boss Martin Foyle is still seeking to 'shuffle the pack' and has made a number of enquiries for new faces over the past ten days and some movement is hoped for before the 11am deadline on Saturday morning for new signings. With confirmation coming earlier today that Sean Canham missed last week's match with injury, the Bulls could be light up front without at least one new face.

Cambridge boss Jez George has shrugged off doubts over his future despite the club's slow start to the campaign. With three players on the naughty step and several others on the physio's waiting list, George moved into the loan market bringing in striker Michael Thalassitis from Stevenage. The teenager netted three times in five games for Hayes and Yeading at the back end of last season and scored his first Stevenage goal against Southampton in the League Cup.

Hereford United vs Cambridge United, Edgar Street, Saturday 22nd September, 3.00pm.

News Round-Up

Southend have received another transfer embargo, the local press is reporting. The Echo says that manager Paul Sturrock has only 13 fit players for tomorrow's match with Exeter, but it is unclear whether it is taxes or footballing debts that have triggered the latest situation. Kidderminster assistant boss Gary Whild says they have not 'hit the panic button yet' but are looking for new additions to their squad. Midfielder Jack Byrne will miss the bulk of the season, while Kyle Storer is out for at least six weeks.

Grimsby have signed Bradford striker Ross Hannah on a three months loan. The 26 year old spent all his career in non-league football before signing for the Bantams in the summer of 2011, but has started just four League matches and is yet to feature this term. Northern Irish side Newry City have been wound up after failing to pay former manager Gerry Flynn £25,000 awarded to him by an employment tribunal.

Accrington are searching for a new stadium sponsor, looking for bids of around £45,000 for the naming rights. They announced an 18 month naming deal just 9 months ago, but the company collapsed shortly after. Former Watford owner Laurence Bassini and a consortium headed up by a Scottish businessman are the latest to enter the race to buy Portsmouth. The Supporters Trust and Portpin are still leading the race.

Chester have confirmed rumours that manager Neil Young is in negotiation over a full time deal that will be the first step to turning the whole club into a full time operation. The Blues failed to sign Macclesfield striker Ben Mills over their part-time status despite the Silkmen backing down on the fee demands. Port Vale's Administrator says he is now talking to a total of seven bidders for the club. They are yet to confirm the identity of any of the parties.

Conf North side Hinckley United have confirmed they have avoided a winding up order from the taxman over an unpaid £10,000 debt. They settled the debt on Monday, but had to delay paying staff wages until today in order to manage it. Shrewsbury have expressed their 'bitter disappointment' after being awarded only £140,000 by a transfer tribunal for striker James Collins, who signed for Swindon in the summer.

Injury Crisis at Edgar Street

Hereford United have a long list of players with injuries according to manager Martin Foyle so he's hoping to bloster his squad before Saturday's game with Cambridge.

"We've got so many little knocks and injuries," Foyle told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"Joe Heath, Clist is struggling, Chris Carruthers is struggling with his heel, Sean Canham with his heel, Townsend with his back.

"So it's a lot of players that aren't probably 100% as they should be.

"We're trying to bring someone in to make us stronger and also freshen us up."
