Could do better

Hereford United take pride of place in the Nationwide Conference League even though they share top billing with Dagenham & Redbridge and Doncaster Rovers who both also have 100 per cent records after last night’s games.

The Bulls won 3-1 at Forest Green Rovers courtesy of goals by Paul Parry, Ian Wright and Danny Williams but manager Graham Turner still believes his side could do better. “We are down to the bare bones as a squad,” Turner told strictlyconference.com. “We have just 17 players and now Richard O’Kelly has taken on a new role, not only is he physio and coach he’s now a player because he was on the bench on Tuesday night.

“But for ability and enthusiasm I cannot fault the players but we lack experience and a physical prowess although we make up for that with enthusiasm. There has been a lot of changes and we still need to settle down and at times at Forest Green we were just belting the ball, panicking almost and putting pressure on ourselves. But that composure will come and the confidence should now be sky high.”

Saturday's game at Gravesend & Northfleet could be the most difficult so far. The newcomers to the Conference have had their first two games against well fancied opponents. On Saturday they held Yeovil to a 2-2 draw and last night were narrowly beaten by Dagenham 2-1 at home in front of 2036 fans. Paul Sturgess, who was with Hereford a couple of years ago, will probably start for Gravesend although he was sent off against Yeovil.

The Bulls will need as much support as possible on Saturday. Why does one of the longest trips to an opponents ground has to be on a Bank Holiday weekend?
