Ferrell at Watford

Andy Ferrell started life as a footballer at Newcastle United but in July 2004 was transferred to Watford. Now 21, he joins Hereford United after trials at Notts County, Forest Green Rovers and most recently Darlington.

Andy arrived as a young left-footed midfielder at the beginning of last season from his North East home having been released by Newcastle and recommended by Peter Beardsley. He played most of his short Watford career in the reserves but made two brief appearances in the Carling Cup to good effect.

He burst onto the scene by coming off the bench in the game against Cambridge in which quality and excitement had been distinctly lacking. Within moments he drove at the Cambridge penalty area and placed a sweet left-foot shot into the back of the net, the only memorable piece of football in the game. Mind, you could tell he was pleased.

Andy's next appearance was again as a late substitute in the game away to Reading. He got the ball on the left of the area and slammed a hard low cross from the edge of the six-yard area that came off the Reading centre-half into the net for three-nil and game over.

I expected to see more of him after that but he was consigned to reserve-team football. I thought that he played quite well in the reserves and was prepared to take responsibility; he wanted the ball. However, the coaching staff didn't seem to fancy him, Ray Lewington said something about his positional sense and that was that.

Andy could be summed up in the word "enthusiasm" and in a world when do or die
enthusiasm is often in short supply (particularly now Heidar has gone) it is a shame that he wasn't given more of a chance at Watford. Good luck Andy, your short stay at Watford will be remembered fondly, not least because without you the semi-final against Liverpool may never have happened.
