A Fair Day at Barnet

GT -v- Sven Goran Fairclough on Saturday.

Barnet manager Paul Fairclough combines his job at Barnet with managing the England Non-League X1 and has, in the past, been happy to offer representative honours to a number of Bulls players during our period in the Conference. He will no doubt be hoping that GT's current crop of youngsters don't repeat the events of our last visit to Underhill when he described us as "the best team I have seen this season".

A version of Barnet FC was formed as long ago as 1888 and after various name changes and locations they settled at their present home, Underhill, in season 1907/8. The early years were spent as amateurs in the Athenian League where they were champions on six occasions and on a similar number, runners-up. Season 1965/66 saw them become semi-pro and join the Southern League where they operated with varying success including reaching the final of the Southern League Cup in 71/72, eventually losing to The Bulls 9-8 on penalties following two 2-2 draws. The seventies saw a number of London's "ex-stars" turn out for the Bees. A certain Jimmy Greaves chipped in with the odd 27 goals in 75/76 despite supposedly playing in midfield.

Promoted to the Football League as Conference Champions at the end of 90/91, they spent 10 years as "seniors" before dipping back into non-league at the end of 2000/1. Most Bulls fans will recall their recent history and doubtless the hardened regulars will not need reminding of the route and delights of a trip to Underhill. However :-

Tickets etc.

Visiting supporters are accommodated on the South Stand (uncovered seating) and if needed, the South East Terrace (covered standing). Entrance costs £15 although there is a £4 reduction for U18s and SU card holders. Note :- it may be a requirement to collect a concession voucher from the ticket office. Please check on arrival at the ground.

By Car :-

Leave the M25 at Junction23 and at the roundabout, take the 4th exit onto the A1081 towards Barnet. At the next roundabout, 1.45 miles, take the 2nd exit onto St Albans Road (A1081). At traffic signals in Barnet take a right onto the A1000. Barnet FC is at the bottom (if you'll pardon the expression) of Barnet Hill near the Junction of Station Road (A110). Not unlike Stockport, car drivers must rely on Street Parking although; there may be spaces at High Barnet Underground Station (£2). Distance between 130 and 140 miles depending on route.

If in doubt, I recommend a glance at http://www.theaa.com/travel/index.jsp just enter the Edgar Street postcode, HR4 9JU and the Barnet code of EN5 2DN although, personally, I would go Trumpet, Gloucester, then follow signs for Cirencester to the top of Burdlip Hill (Air Balloon Pub) and straight on to Oxford.

Coach :-

HUISA

The H.U.I.S.A coaches will be leaving the Merton Meadow car park at 9am. and the cost of travel will be £15. Tickets can be purchased from the Main office during normal office hours. Having taken three full coaches to Stockport, it is hoped that Bulls fans will again travel in numbers and we would advise anyone wishing to travel on the official coaches to book up early.

HUMADS

The HUMADS double-decker will be making its second trip of the season. Members have priority in booking at £15.00. Non-members, if spaces remain can book at £18.00.The coach will depart Ross (opposite library) at 8.00 am, Hereford (Blackfriars Street) at 9.00 am, Malvern (Cross Keys) at 10.00 am and finally, M5 Junction 7 at 10.30. Arrival at Barnet is expected to be 1.30 pm. Contact Reg on 01684 572945.

Train/Tube

Hereford to London Paddington then take a Circle Line Tube to Kings Cross and a Northern Line Tube to High Barnet Station. Underhill is a five-minute walk down Barnet Hill. Hard work going back up the Hill particularly with several Strongbows on board! Alternatively, make your way to Kings Cross and catch a faster surface train to New Barnet Station. This has the advantage of delivering you to the doorstep of Wetherspoons' "Railway Bell".

Pubs

I believe The Bees supporters club does not admit visiting supporters although the Old Red Lion just behind the north entrance to Underhill is reported to be a favourite for away fans. At the top of Barnet Hill, are the Moon under Water, Wetherspoons and the King John whereas at the bottom of the hill, by the underground bridge are The Weaver and the Queens Arms (Apparently, the Queens Legs are no longer open).

Enjoy.
