Chester Barely Make Salary Cap

Chester chairman Stephen Vaughan has admitted that his club are just 0.4%, or around £100 a week, inside the club's salary cap.

Speaking to the Chester Chronicle Vaughan said: "The Football League have been extremely helpful but the harsh reality is that our wage bill is currently 59.6% of turnover, and as such we can't sign any more players until existing players in the squad move out. We have 27 professionals on our books currently, and we would like to sign two more prior to the transfer deadline, but in order to conform to legislation, I am afraid it has to be one in one out.

"The salary cap system is a good financial safety mechanism for clubs, but it does create operational problems, like the ones we are experiencing at the moment. However, I am hopeful that we can find a way forward."

It is unclear whether loan signing Ricky Ravenhill, who is expected to sign full terms at the end of his loan, is included in the current figures and Chester are also seeking goalkeeping cover for the inexperienced Jon Danby.
