League Set To Score 500,000th Goal

English League football is set to record it's 500,000th goal, and will award the scorer with a special award.

The Football League's programme of games tonight is expected to add the 63 goals necessary to see the half million mark notched up since League football was created in 1888.

Football League Head of Communications John Nagle commented: "The scoring of half a million goals is a genuine milestone for league football in this country, one that has taken more than 170,000 matches and 107 full seasons. We will be recognising this achievement by making a special award to the scorer of the goal, which is most likely to be scored towards the end of Tuesday night's fixture programme. This will give every player in The Football League an opportunity to earn himself a permanent place in the game's history books."

To date, 485,405 goals have been scored in the Football League, with 14,532 in the Premiership.
