Hereford United gaffer Graham Turner has urged star striker Stuart Fleetwood to do even more for his side, should he be looking to move on up the football pyramid. Speaking to The Forester, Turner claimed he would have been surprised if anyone came in with a bid for the Welsh Under 21 International before yesterdays transfer deadline.
"Stuart's started his first full season in dramatic style and now looks a very good player, but I don't expect anybody to come in for him - I think he has still got a bit left to do for us," said Turner, who has seen Fleetwood score five goals in six starts so far this season.
The young striker's manager was full of praise, though, for the man he bought to Edgar Street in January. "Stuart has got a great attitude and he gets in there to get chances. He has the ability to run past defences with his pace and he looks very strong and fit at the moment, you can see his pace and power even though he's not the biggest lad in the world."
"He's willing to run forward which is priceless in the game. A lot of strikers want to come short and have the ball to feet, but Stuart can get beyond defenders. But he hasn't done enough in the game yet. He'll be monitored and a number of clubs will be interested, but they won't make a move this early with only four or five games under his belt this season."
It seems that Turner's assesment of the situation was a correct one as well, as it was not, as expected, Fleetwood but Andy Williams who was subject to bids before last nights transfer deadline.
Meanwhile the chairman of Bristol Rovers, Geoff Dunford, has commented on their failure to obtain Andy Williams from Hereford United.
He 'revealed that Rovers came close to what would have been an amazing double coup, with Hereford United's Andrew Williams also eyed up for a possible move alongside Rickie (Lambert).'
"We did try our best to sign Andrew Williams from Hereford, but at the last moment we were rebuffed," he told the official Bristol Rovers Website.
