Evans "Asked Charlery To Lie"

At the ongoing trial of Boston boss Steve Evans and four other former Boston employees, former striker Ken Charlery admitted that he had signed two contracts at the club and that Evans asked him to lie to the FA.

Charlery, who signed for the club in 2000, had two contracts - a 'genuine' one for £620 per week and a 'fake' contract for £120 per week, plus 'scouting costs' that were classed as non-taxable, that was filed with the FA. He was also paid a signing on fee of £16,000 in cash and admitted to the court that he had never scouted for the club.

Charlery told the court that, with the FA investigating the illegal payments in 2002, Evans phoned him to ask him to lie about the contracts. After initially agreeing, Charlery changed his mind and his statement to the FA led to the Inland Revenue investigation.

In earlier events, former player-manager Greg McPhee told the court how payslips would contain nothing more than a name and an amount paid with no tax details, while a former director claimed that Evans was appointed as manager because 'he brought more to the club than football'. A former Chief Executive, Kevan Mugleston, quit after six months after the board refused his request for an investigation into their tax affairs and he found himself paying cash into individual players bank accounts.

The case continues.
