Welsh CBI call for Hereford by-pass

Any football supporter who travels up and down the A49 knows how bad a road it is but at least there are by-passes along the route around all the major towns but one, Hereford.

For example Hereford United fans travelling from the city to Chester on Saturday can by-pass Leominster, Ludlow and Shrewsbury.

But if live on the Ross side of Hereford then almost certainly you need to drive through Hereford.

Now support for a Hereford by-pass has come from an unlikely source that of the North Wales CBI.

Brian Lee, managing director at Sandycroft-based Allan Morris Transport, which is based just outside Chester, takes over as chairman of the CBI's North Wales committee. Improvements in transport infrastructure is said to be one of his aims.

Lee has told the Daily Post that improvements to the A49 are vital and concedes that a westerly bypass of Hereford, a bottleneck, would speed traffic flows. He also want improvements to the rail links from North Wales to Cardiff. That route also goes through Hereford.

Whilst a by-pass around Hereford may not be high on some Hereford United supporters wish lists, there is little doubt that in the long term it will happen. The traffic flow in Hereford will then be reduced and access to Edgar Street should become easier.
