Have boots, will travel is Trevor Benjamin's motto. He told the Sun why.
“I wouldn’t call myself a nomad — I’ve just been at a lot of clubs.
“I think I’ve got my own page in the handbook! I can take the stick. I’ve heard the one about having more clubs than Tiger Woods quite a lot.
“Some of my friends get a bit confused about where I’m playing. When Hereford showed an interest in me last year I thought ‘I’m well-travelled’ and jumped into the car and drove over.
“I believe I hold the record for clubs. And with all those managers I know a little bit about management!
“They were all different with different ideas. Could I name them all? No! Not even on my hands. And I couldn’t tell you the best either.”
Benjamin started at Cambridge, played for another 14 clubs, then joined Hereford United.
“People ask me why I’ve had so many clubs but when I was at Leicester it was to go out and get more experience.
“I wake up in the morning playing football and I go to sleep at night playing football. So I’d rather go out on loan and play than not play.
“When I do have the chance, I do prove I’ve got a bit about me, even if that’s blowing my own trumpet. But I think my goal record shows that.
“I don’t regret any of my moves. It’s just the way it worked out.”
Graham Turner says he's puzzled why Benjamin has travelled so much.
“I remember him as a very good young prospect at Cambridge before he earned himself a big-money move to Leicester.
“I’ve no idea why he hasn’t fitted into other manager’s plans but we picked him up on a free from Peterborough and so far, so good.”
Benjamin usually rents somewhere close to his current club but has kept a family base in Northampton. He has also planned ahead for the time when he hangs up his boots.
“It’s quite useful living in the middle of the country. It’s not lonely — I’ve done it so long. I don’t know how many miles a year I drive but I find it quite relaxing.
“I’ve got a cleaning business — household and industrial. I started it up and my dad runs it.
“It will be something for me to fall back on when I stop playing.”
