Giles joins Newport County

Former Hereford United defender Martyn Giles has joined Newport County.

On 27 July 2006 he signed for the Bulls after leaving Carmarthen Town. He was a first team regular in the Bulls defence, and was named Fan's Player of the Month for September. However his season was effectively over by the end of October when he suffered two long-term injuries, initially suffering dizziness from a head injury sustained in a game against Darlington.

Once he had recovered he then had a back injury which ensured he did not play again in the 2006-07 season, and he was released at the end of the season.

25 year old Giles has played for Wales at U17, U19 and semi-professional levels.

Meanwhile another former Hereford United defender is on the move. Darren Blewitt is moving to Heybridge Swifts from Ryman League Premier Division neighbours Billericay Town.

Blewitt, formerly at West Ham United, had loan spells at both Southend United and Hereford United.

His spell at Edgar Street was for the first half of the 2005/06 season.

"When I first went there my first question was - Hereford where is it? Is it in England? Well Hereford is in England but only just isn't it? It's on the border but they are great people, I was a bit unsure at first but I found the locals really easy to get along with. The players were a bit of a mixture to be truthful, a few local boys; a couple of northerners and a few London lads so there were a lot of different accents going around obviously. But my accent was the best and in the end they all tried to copy me, but as for the locals well I can tell you there were a few interesting people down there that's for sure - but overall some great people," said Blewitt in an interview after his return to West Ham.
