Former Hereford United striker Trevor Benjamin has been training with Kettering Town but has not yet signed a deal with them.
Benjamin started his career at Rockingham Road when aged just 15. He is expected to play for the Poppies in a pre-season friendly this afternoon against St Neots.
"Trevor has been training with us and we are seeing if we can come to some sort of deal," said Poppies manager Mark Cooper as reported by NorthantsNews.
"If we can then great. But if not then we have to try and look at other targets.
"I think he has enjoyed it with us so far.
"He has come in and his attitude has been first class.
"He is still not firing at 100 per cent like a lot of the lads because we haven't been back that long.
"If he wants to come somewhere convenient and local to him, where he can maybe make a name for himself again, then this might be the right place.
"If it comes down to money then there is a chance we could lose him. But it's my job to try to persuade him.
"We have pulled off a major coup by getting Darren Wrack and if we can get Trevor then it will be just as good.
"We need a target man. If you look at all the good Conference sides, they have one."
