A former Hereford United footballer, Harry Hogben, has recently passed away.
A natural sportsman, Hogben was a regular member of his battalion team during the war and he attracted league scouts in his last game for the British Occupation Forces in Berlin when he notched five goals in 15 minutes! On being demobilised he joined Glebe Farm, an amateur side in the Midland Templar’s League, where he scored 45 goals in his first season. This attracted the attention of Merthyr and Birmingham but he was not keen to turn professional. Eventually though, George Tranter persuaded him to sign professional forms for Hereford United in 1948/49 from amateur side Birmingham City Transport. He played just the one season on the right wing, making 31 appearances and scoring four goals. Harry was popular with the crowd and showed great ball control, a tremendous burst of speed and when on form, a deadly shot. He left Hereford at the end of the season and linked up with Birmingham League side Darlaston and later played for Halesowen.
